Every year we produce two juried art shows (Spring and Labor Day Weekend).  Artists in all media are encouraged to apply. These shows feature juried local, regional and national artists' original work. From the pool of artists applying, about 130 artists from all over the US and Canada are invited to exhibit. These artists are selected by a professional jury process in eleven distinct media categories.

Both shows are presented in the indoor, air-conditioned setting of the Greensfelder Recreation Complex at Queeny Park in west St. Louis County. Food and refreshments are available on site, parking for the public and artists is free.  Live music playing during wine tasting and peak attendance.  During Sunday afternoon, an interactive children's art education program encourages families with youngsters to meet and talk with artists and learn about their work.

A Big Success for One of Our Guests....
Something remarkable happened last week!  Thanks to the continued efforts of Cafeteria Culture and Debby Lee Cohen, Founder of Cafeteria Culture and previous guest on All That Buzz with Victoria, NYC schools issued a request for bids for a new school food compostable plate! Plastic foam (polystyrene) school food trays are on the way out and zero-waste public school cafeterias are almost here!  By cities purchasing collectively, the cost of an alternative tray/plate can be reduced, thus eliminating 2.6 million toxic and polluting polystyrene trays used per day in all six cities! Congratulations to Debby Lee Cohen!

Claude Carone

Claude Carone

On Thursday November 7th, there will be a solo exhibition by Claude Carone in the Main Galleries.  The Carriage House will be closed for the winter season. The work will be on display through December 1stwith a reception for the artist on Saturday November 9th from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Carone-Untitled

“My paintings use an unlimited vocabulary of space that tries to articulate a border area linking the unconscious and the dream state. My paintings enact a psychological dialogue between these two states of being.
I use color – each of which has a specific weight -- to organize space and pull the elements of the paintings together. The multiple perspectives and organization of planes creates a sense of depth despite the fact that I fit a world of three dimensions into two.
Depth and surface share a mission: to take the viewer to a new level of perceptive consciousness. Like music, my paintings show both major movements and the elaborations that accompany them. And just as silence serves to shape musical mass and duration, the implied space outside the paintings serves to help define the space within."

Mark Fell is an electronic musician based in Sheffield, UK, and one half of the experimental music duo SND. His work is created from variations on algorithmic and pattern-generating systems, producing non-repetitive structures that are equally influenced by house and techno music of the late 80s and early 90s. Recent albums such as Multistability and UL8 explore a number of timing and tuning systems rooted in non-Western music, with Fell asserting that “music is a technology for constructing an experience of time.” His set at Artists Space marks a rare institutional solo performance for New York City, departing from his recent recorded works and research undertaken during a residency at EMPAC, in Troy, NY.

Fell received an honorary mention in the digital music category at Prix ARS Electronica, and was shortlisted for the Quartz award for his contributions to research in digital music. Currently a 2013 Artist-in-Residence at Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC), Troy, New York, he has made presentations at various festivals and venues including Trouw, Amsterdam; Cave12, Geneva; Norberg Festival, Sweden; Yale Union, Portland; and Soup, Tokyo. In addition to his creative practice, Fell has been involved in a number of academic research projects ranging from computer science to musicology.

Lou Reed: Rock and Roll Heart filmmaker Timothy Greenfield-Sanders commented, "Lou Reed music was the backbeat to our lives and his lyrics were our conscience. His death is a blow, not only to New York City, but also to the world."

Lou Reed: Rock And Roll Heart, An American Masters Special (1998) Film Synopsis
For more than 40-years, Reed has been at the forefront of American avant-garde music, beginning with creation of the Velvet Underground in 1965, a band with artistic and political visions far beyond the popular music of the time. Gritty and realistic, the brutal honesty in Reed's lyrics and sound made him a cultural icon of the disenfranchised throughout the '60s and '70s. With songs like Heroin and All Tomorrow's Parties, he tackled harsh urban realities. His Walk on the Wild Side surprisingly made it to the top of the charts and has become a cultural classic about a taboo, hidden lifestyle. Reed worked with other icons of his day -- Andy Warhol, David Bowie, Laurie Anderson. From punk rock to grunge, he has had an unparalleled influence on the American music scene. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the late '90s and given the prestigious Hero Award by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, he continues his life-long experimentation as both a writer and performer. Originally broadcast: April 29, 1998. One hour.

THE ALMOST MAN
dir. Martin Lund/ Norway/ 75 min.
Best Film, Best Actor – Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival; Official Selection – Hamptons Intl. Film Festival; Official Selection – Cinequest

Uneasy feelings about becoming a father and an adult cause Henrik to act out in hilariously inappropriate ways in this offbeat comedy. On the one hand, he wants to ignore adulthood and spend time fooling around with his friends. On the other, he must grow up and make his relationship with Tone, the mother of his unborn child, work…The Almost Man comically tells a tale of one man’s long road towards maturity, and how hard it can be for some individuals to face the prospect of growing up.
– Joe Keenan , CINEQUEST catalogue

“A charmingly realistic portrait of the dogged, insistent clamp many of us try to retain on those carefree days of young adulthood…touching…incredibly astute…vibrant…a breath of fresh air.”
– Nicholas Bell, Ioncinema.com

Cine-World Film Festival - Nov. 4, 6 & 10
IT’S ALL SO QUIET
dir. Nanouk Leopold/ Netherlands, Germany/ 93 min.
Opening Night Selection – Panorama, Berlinale; Best Feature – Torino GLBT Film Festival; Grand Jury Award for Outstanding International Dramatic Feature Film – Outfest; Silver Q Hugo – Chicago International Film Festival; Official Selection – Frameline

Helmer, a single farmer in his fifties, lives with his aged, bedridden father in the Dutch countryside. His working days are marked by the visits of milk collector Johan, a man of his own age for whom Helmer holds a secret fascination. One day Helmer decides to renovate the house, buying himself a new double bed and moving his father upstairs. His life gains even more momentum, when adolescent farmhand Henk comes to help him out.

“Leopold's careful staging of the scenario contains shades of Carlos Reygadas' similarly lyrical and country-set Silent Light. In both movies, nature takes on definition as a palpable force with greater substance than the precise demons haunting each character. Stillness dominates, from the first shots of cornfields at sunrise to the final one that finds Helmer lying among them. When It's All So Quiet comes full circle, the title is virtually an understatement.”
– Eric Kohn, indiewire

Cine-World Film Festival - Nov. 1, 2 & 9
ONCE UPON A TIME VERÔNICA
dir. Marcelo Gomes/ Brazil/ 91 min.
Best Film, Best Actress – Amazonas Film Festival, Brazil; FIPRESCI Award – FICG Guadalajara; Special Mention – San Sebastian Intl. Film Festival

Verônica is fresh out of medical school. It’s a crucial time in her life, a period filled with doubts and important decisions to be made: tough career choices, her intimate bond with her ailing father, and her active but chaotic love life. Verônica must deal with all of them as she tries to cope with the adult life that lies ahead.

Once Upon a Time Verônica is a fairy-tale in reverse. There are no fairy godmothers, no weddings, and no dreams. Verônica’s story reveals itself through adventures, misfortunes, desires and songs.

“A superbly sensual character study of a young woman navigating emotional and professional crossroads…built around a stunning central performance.”
– Neil Young, The Hollywood Reporter
