The Art of Joe Sorren at AFA of Soho

Reception with the artist | Saturday March 8, 6-8PM
Exhibition | March 6 through April 6, 2014
Free and open to the public

Please join us, and our special guest Joe Sorren for an opening reception to be held at AFA of SoHo on March 8th, from 6-8PM. This new collection of fourteen oil paintings on canvas explores form and palette while highlighting the tender faces and gestures of his signature figures. Joe Sorren allows his artworks to evolve naturally and subconsciously. His fluid and expressive brush strokes convey deep care; his compositions are soft, soothing and invite the viewer to explore deeply emotional subjects within hazy and dreamlike landscapes.

AFA is located at 54 Greene Street (at Broome), in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City
Gallery hours are Monday - Saturday, 10am - 7pm and Sundays 11am - 6pm.
The reception and exhibition are both free and open to the public.
For more information or to be placed on a preview list please call 212.226.7374

AFA | At AFA, we are inspired by wildly imaginative artwork that indulges the senses and engages the emotions with layers of symbolism and dark complexity. We exhibit paintings, drawings and sculptures created by extraordinary established and emerging artists who are highly skilled and have a unique vision.

For its sixth exhibition in Art Paris, ifa gallery made a selection of black and white Chinese works of art. In their respective fields, be it photography, ink painting, installation or video, they give a view of the complexity of the Chinese cultural heritage. This dichotomy between the black of the ink and the white of rice paper allows to highlight the specificity of the current artistic aspiration in China. Different media are in use: ink, paintings, photography, installation, video… The common thread running through the works are the references to and questioning of Chinese culture, the beauty of form and symbolism. Between them, these works create a world in which ink and its symbolic matter – black – become new artistic tools that revisit the Chinese avant-garde in an unexpected way.

Hearsay: Artists Reveal Urban Legends

Hearsay: Artists Reveal Urban Legends

March 29 - May 8, 2014
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 12, 2014, 5 - 8 pm
Visual Arts Center
California State University, Fullerton

Begovich Gallery
800 North State College Blvd.,

Curated by Lauren Haisch and Wendy Sherman

Hearsay: Artists Reveal Urban Legends will include approximately 35 artists who will each create artwork based on an urban legend with special significance to them. Each work will be accompanied by text explaining the artist's personal connection to their chosen urban legend.

Urban legends serve as our modern day mythology. Based on cultural traditions and morality tales, these stories prey upon our collective fears and provoke strong, emotional responses. Traditionally, in order for these legends to survive, a mix of text and imagery was used in storytelling, heightening the power of the legend as it passed down through generations. More recently, the Internet has encouraged the rapid dissemination of these modern legends, many of which can be traced back to the original folklore that inspired them.
The purpose of the exhibition is not to illustrate urban legends, but to analyze them in conjunction with each artist's own subjective viewpoint resulting in a shared experience between artist and audience.
The exhibition will incorporate a wide range of mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography and video, in order to capture the essence of each urban legend.
A catalog will be published for this exhibition through Grand Central Press. Author and urban legends expert Jan Brunvand and art writers Tyler Stallings, Doug Harvey, and Mat Gleason will contribute essays. The catalog will also include essays by both curators as well as full color images of the artwork and short statements from each artist discussing their work in the exhibition.
