About the ExhibitionOn view April 11 to August 28, In Tune with the World unveils a new selection of artists from the Collection—Takashi Murakami, Matthew Barney, Mark Bradford, Christian Boltanski, Trisha Donnelly, Dan Flavin, Jacqueline Humphries, Pierre Huyghe, Yves Klein, James Lee Byars, François Morellet, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Shimabuku and Anicka Yi, among others— bringing together modern and contemporary works in various mediums, most of which have never before been exhibited in these spaces. More than a simple hanging of permanent collection works, In Tune with the World reflects on man’s place in the universe and the bonds that tie him to his surrounding environment and living world, highlighting the interconnections between humans, animals, plants, and even inanimate objects. In a daylong celebration for all ages, revel in the splendor of birds with concerts, philosophical bird walks, arts and crafts, and children’s literature..
The specially created Bird Zone offers drop-in family programs and music from French composer and ornithologist Olivier Messiaen’s Catalogue of Birds, played in live excerpts by various solo pianists throughout the day in the Hall of North American Forests.
In the evening, solo pianist Taka Kigawa performs select movements from Messiaen’s 13-part composition, which evoke specific bird songs.
Following the concert, philosopher Simon Critchley and Paul Sweet, the museum’s beloved ornithologist, will discuss the philosophical implications of flight.
