James Austin Murray
"Mystery of Light"

April 3 - May 3, 2014

OPENING RECEPTION
Thursday, April 3rd
6 - 8 pm
James Austin Murray, Invincible Serenity (detail), 2014, Oil on shaped canvas, 48 x 64 in / 121.9 x 162.6 cm
We are pleased to present "Mystery of Light," James Austin Murray's first solo exhibition at Lyons Wier Gallery. For the past 20 years, James Austin Murray has worked through many different approaches in his art - from tightly rendered graphite cityscapes to pure white abstraction, works on paper, metal, canvas and board, flat and multi-dimensional.  It is through these various incarnations that he has settled upon a pure black palette driven by an automatic and deftly intuitive hand.

"My current work is both about the paint and the light that reflects on and in it. I consider light to be a material I work with much like paint is a material I work with. It is the way paint plays with light that is my focus. I use black paint. Black absorbs the entire spectrum of visible light, leaving the oil in the paint to reflect the light in the room. You might wonder if this is all the work is about and you'd be right to wonder. Light is just one element and a starting point" - James Austin Murray. Read more

SCOPE Art Show

Basel, Switzerland: Connected by dedicated SCOPE TRAMS to the main fair, SCOPE Art Show returns to its pioneering location in Klybeckquai, the new art and culture center of Basel. A wellspring of cultural development for Basel Stadt, SCOPE was the first in what is now a series of extraordinary happenings centered on the New Arts District on the Rhine.

In proximity to SCOPE Basel's 4,000m² pavilion, the Tinguely Museum will present Jean Tinguely's brilliant musical performance "Cyclope" along with several restaurants, bars, and clubs orchestrating "pop-ups" along the once-industrial riverfront. SCOPE is delighted to be at the center of this focused cultural moment in Basel.

SCOPE Basel will welcome 75 International Exhibitors alongside 20 Breeder Program Galleries, offering a view of the contemporary art market available nowhere else. Exhibitors hail from four continents and over twenty countries including China, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Brazil, Italy, Iran, Russia, Turkey, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Germany, UK, Spain, and Canada.

SCOPE Basel opens to VIPs and Press on Tuesday, June 17, with its Platinum First View benefit from 12pm - 4pm; the fair will run June 18-22, 2014. Accessible by dedicated SCOPE tram, SCOPE Basel is connected to the Messaplatz and Claraplatz. Additionally, visitors may reach the fair by a scenic walking route along the Rhine, which will feature SCOPE Basel information points for convenience.

Long-established as the original incubator for emerging work, SCOPE's Breeder Program celebrates its 14th year of introducing new galleries to the contemporary market. A remarkable opportunity for exposure, Breeder Program alumni include: Peres Projects, John Connelly Presents, Galeria Enrique Guerrero, Daniel Reich Gallery, Bischoff Weiss, INVISIBLE-EXPORTS, SEVENTEEN, ROKEBY, Taxter Spengemann, Magical Artroom and Spinello Projects, among other notable galleries.

The Breeder Program requires a separate application, to be reviewed by SCOPE's curatorial panel. You can find this application here, or by following instructions listed below.

Lisa Ross at the Brunei Gallery, London

We are proud to announce a major exhibition of works by gallery artist Lisa Ross. Curated by our gallery director, Jolaine Frizzell, we warmly welcome you to attend the Private View on 3 April 2014 from 6-8pm at the Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University College London.

For 10 years, Ross worked in and around the Taklamakan Desert of China’s far northwest in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region photographing these ephemeral markers of faith. The exhibition brings into focus the Uyghur religious tradition with its desert shrines to Sufi saints and Muslim pilgrimage sites.

The exhibition runs from 4 April – 21 June 2014.
