Reynolds Fine Art is pleased to offer a hand picked selection of early Vintage Drawings executed by the artist, Susan Weinreich, in the 1970’s. Raw and Frenetic, these drawings were created on the cusp of the artist’s descent into schizophrenia.  Also included in this exhibition is a selection of signed Black and White Woodcut Prints, Powerfully Bold and Unique, produced from the 35 original blocks executed by Weinreich during the acute phase of her illness.  A corresponding selection of the original Blocks, themselves, will also be on display throughout the show. The exhibit concludes with significant and highly compelling Large Scale Pastels and Mixed Media works created during the early phase of Weinreich’s recovery.

 “Art is the noblest way to make a seeming tragedy into the occasion of triumph.  Susan Weinreich’s drawings and paintings have that redemptive quality: they reach unabashedly into darkness and thrust into shattering clarity, telling the story of their sometimes tortured inspiration from a hard-earned place of safety.  These brave pictures, suffused with intimacy, elaborate her unstinting gaze at both the smoothness of the world’s surfaces and the jagged turmoil of the human mind.  Susan Weinreich is remarkable for the art she has made in sickness and in health, for the profound emergence from schizophrenia she has achieved, and for the intense self-awareness that has marked her recovery.” -Andrew Solomon, PhD, is a writer and lecturer on politics, culture, psychology and the arts.

Susan Weinreich is a celebrated American Artist, Lecturer and Mental Health Advocate whose paintings and drawings have been exhibited across the nation. At the request of galleries, universities, public corporations and private non-profit organizations, Susan has spoken in the United States and Canada about her art and the impact of her past illness on her life. Her art and life story have been featured in the national press, including the New York Times.

Originally diagnosed in 1975 with paranoid schizophrenia while attending the Rhode Island School of Design. Weinreich’s recovery from her illness provides an important lesson for us all in the power of heroic commitment, perseverance and healing to affect change. Her work both as an advocate for those less fortunate and as an artist has made much impact on the lives of many people and their energy.

Ms. Weinreich’s artwork is in the collection of numerous individuals, public and private, including, The William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock, Arkansas, the World Corporate Headquarters of Eli Lilly in Indianapolis, Indiana, and the Four Winds Hospital, in Katonah, New York.

The Show will be on display from October 4^th through the 29^th at Reynolds Fine Art located in New Haven’s historic 9^th square on 96 Orange St. The Shows opening reception will be held on Friday the 4^th of October. My inspiration comes from a wide variety of sources including fthe natural world and freaks of nature, melancholy trips down memory lane and discoveries made there, classical music, oddities, Victorian fashion, old medical book illustrations, costuming, creepy religious statues, carnivals, broken dolls and objects out of place." Jennybird Alcantara Please join us, and our special guest Jennybird Alcantara for an opening reception to be held at AFA in SoHo on October 19th, from 6-8PM. The exhibition includes a collection of nearly 50 original works: oil paintings, works on paper and mixed-media dolls.  The exhibition runs from October 16th through November 15th. The gallery is located at 54 Greene Street in SoHo  Hours: Monday-Saturday, 10am-7pm / Sundays, 11am-6pm More information: 212.226.7374 | info@afanyc.com     In "Curious Nature", Alcantara uses the symbolism of duality to explore the connection between life and death, as well as the beauty and cruelness of natural things, including landscape, animals and humans. The exhibition coincides with a feature story on the Artist in Hi-Fructose Magazine's October 2013 issue.  While the majority of this exhibition consists of oil paintings on wood, it also includes sculptures of unique dolls inspired by Alcantara's works on paper. Her creations have been described as morbidly romantic, and connected via a dreamlike narrative. Through her paintings, she contemplates the complex interconnectedness of opposites as seen through the prism of myth, fable and fantasy. The anthropomorphic qualities in her characters show the relationship of the central figure to the world she inhabits. The show's featured piece, 'The Curious Nature of Extraordinary Beings', is the largest in the collection, measuring 56 x 72 unframed. Alcantara lives in San Francisco, and received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited broadly in the US and Europe and published in many publications including: Hi-Fructose, Juxtapoz, Raw Vision, and Art Doll Quarterly. A collection of her work is compiled in a book entitled "Creatures of Saintly Disguise". Yes Gallery is proud to present "Overneath,"  an exhibition featuring works by Paul Flinders, curated by Lesley Doukhowetzky.

Paul approaches experience with optimistic curiosity and a particular attraction to the creepy and absurd.  When strange recollections allow the imagination to run riot, waking experience feels like a dream and it causes us to question the reality of the moment with a sense of awe.

Flinders work intuitively allows the freedom to explore form.  Without expectation or concern, non-idiomatic improvisation takes over and the subject emerges both personal and archetypal, abstract and representational. Paul’s work invites the viewer into private and transcendent moments where they may either exist as intruders or guests.
