Formento + Formento's groundbreaking photographic work "Circumstance: American Beauty Down on Bruised Knees" Presented by TrafficNYC and Vincent Vallarino Fine Art Gallery at Art Miami

New York, NY (November 20, 2013) Vincent Vallarino Fine Art and TrafficNYC, two New York based galleries, have partnered to present the dynamic husband/wife teamFormento + Formento at Art Miami from December 3rd- 8th. Formento + Formento's most noted photographic series, "Circumstance: American Beauty on Bruised Knees", will be displayed at Art Miami - Booth B19 (The Art Miami Pavilion Wynwood Arts District 3101 NE 1st Avenue, Miami, Fl.).  The series, which was created on their 2009 epic journey across America, captures a decaying American landscape with staged juxtapositions of iconic, awe-inspiring real American beauties. The characters, both vulnerable and powerful, represent the backbone of American culture that have been abandoned and left behind. The images exude an ethereal sensuality along with a cinematic narrative, creating ambiguous scenes reminiscent of David Lynch's films and Edward Hooper's powerful Ashcan themes of the solitary figure, the melancholy of dusk, and the lonely road. In 2009 the United States was suffering from the subprime crisis. BJ and Richielle Formento packed their home and three Siamese cats into a 27-foot silver Airstream trailer and set out on a cross-country photographic odyssey. The trip led the couple through 25 states as they delved into the real life stories of women in the pits of despair. Operating on a shoestring budget, they found their subjects and models as they traveled, from local newspaper ads to local diners. "So much of the 'producing' America is now defunct," says BJ Formento, "back roads lead us to ghost towns and forgotten strip malls, to abandoned churches and motels, to rotting steel mills and theaters, prisons, airports and train stations. Luckily we found women in these towns to play our heroines. It was an amazing journey." These images attest to just how much the world around us can mirror the world inside. The Formentos' abandoned buildings, as much a protagonist here as the women who inhabit them, are a potent reminder of loss. The life energy is drained from their bones. Whatever lives were once housed within them with their attendant hopes and dreams and have since faded. Art Miami marks another exciting benchmark for BJ and Richeille Formento whose photographic expeditions have spanned the globe. The Formentos were a top finalist in Vogue's New Exposure Competition 2012, working with Bottega Venetta and Red Digital Camera. A solo exhibition opened in November 2012 to rave reviews at London's Society Club. The couple's work was featured in Vogue Italia's Corso Como Gallery, Milan in both 2012 and 2013. 2013 kicked off in New York City at Edelman Arts and Traffic Art Space, which ran in tandem with an exhibition at Wonderground Studios and Robert Klein Gallery presented their work at Photo Paris earlier this month. Most notably, the Formentos celebrated the release of their first art tome,Circumstance, published by YK Editions in September 2013. The book is accompanied by a short documentary on their work shown throughout the early fall at the Pompidou Museum in Paris.    About Formento + Formento BJ Formento was born in Hawaii and grew up in the Philippines. After receiving his BFA in Photography from the Academy of Arts University of California, he moved to New York and assisted Richard Avedon, Mary Ellen Mark, and Annie Leibovitz, as well as studied with Eugene Richards and Arnold Newman. Richeille Formento was born in London and attended the prestigious Central St. Martins College of Art before working as an art director and designer in the fashion industry. This solo exhibition features over twenty new oil paintings on panel and intimately scaled works on gold edged vellum card.

The Hive presents a loosely narrative series that uses allegory to explore themes of authority, duty, and domestic civilization.

Working at the turn of the century, poet and novelist Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) completed the Duino Elegies that pondered existential purpose and the viability of salvation which in part is the basis for The Hive.

In a letter to his publisher, Rilke wrote:

"Everywhere transience is plunging into the depths of Being... It is our task to imprint this temporary, perishable earth into ourselves so deeply, so painfully and passionately, that its essence can rise again...

We are the bees of the invisible. We wildly collect the honey of the visible, to store it in the great golden hive of the invisible."

Created predominately in Payne's Grey, Kilpatrick creates an atmospheric, dream-like environment that encourages reflection, investigation, and longing for requited faith.

The Hive runs through January 12, 2013

An Intimate Exhibition Features 10 Artists during Art Basel Miami through January 31

NOVEMBER 15, 2013, MIAMI BEACH...It’s fitting that the Lord Balfour hotel in South Beach host an art exhibit entitled ‘WORD’ from December 1 – January 31. Why? Well, step into the hotel and you will immediately see a key design detail – an almost origami like scroll on the ceiling that includes several famous quotes from Lord Balfour and Winston Churchill.  Balfour coined a few phrases that linger today:  “Make it short and sweet“ is etched into mirrors in the loos.  A book of letters was published in 1992 between Balfour and Lady Elcho – who were said to be “greater than friends and less than lovers” scandalous for the time and titles.  So hosting an exhibition at the hotel in which words are a central theme makes perfect sense.  The exhibit has been organized by PinkBastard and includes works by artists Adriana Carvalho, Alissa Christine, Katie Flood, Kevin Foltz, Cory Foote, Rosa Naday Garmendia, Franklin Sinanan, Lauren Swartzbaugh, VILTE and David Zalben.

Brazilian born Adriana Carvalho resides in Miami but was introduced to the welding process in Chicago.  She creates artwork out of passion and ideas from circumstances in daily life.  Sexy lingerie made with harsh metal products appear as light as a feather and the messages woven into the sculptures represent her dreams, fears and social commentary. 

Modern conveniences have manufactured a swift and vapid style of letter writing. Artist Cory Foote documents his digital experience using a large format 4x5 camera, film, photographic paper, and an iPhone.  “I send over 1,160 text messages every month... they are rarely of any remarkable worth.” Foote created a physical document of his digital experiences with communications in an age of mobile phones and social networking websites.

Miami based artist David Zalben was born in Brooklyn. Bending wire into sculpture he transforms verse into a visual art form that is not only sculptural, but tells a story of love, vexation and spiritual growth.  “I’m fascinated with complicated simplicity, and wire allows me to invent with just my hands and a pair of pliers,” says Zalben.  Zalben’s works are truly beautiful in their sculptural sense, while the words provide a depth that far exceeds mere aesthetics.

Sumerset Maugham “Words have weight, sound and appearance; it is only by considering these that you can write a sentence that is good to look at and good to listen to.”

Painting with many thin glazes and dynamic techniques that incorporate dripping passages and large brushstrokes, the colors are luminously overlaid and interconnected. Using more than 1000 cracked eggshells, the light filtering through the chandelier has an attractive, soft color. Yw’s work speaks to the mystery of the fragility of life and the transformative connections that transcend the fleeting moment. Since 2009, Yw has been using recycled materials such as light shades, stuffed animals, and eggshells. The everyday use of the chicken and its products has drawn Yw to incorporate these objects into her work. Using the fragility of the eggshell, Yw reminds us that although our fragile individual existence in nature is momentary, through connection it is transformed into a greater work filled with light and color. Chizuco Sophia Yw has exhibited nationally and internationally at the Chelsea Museum (New York), the Staten Island Museum (New York), the New York Hall of Science (New York), Lincoln Center (New York), Art Monaco 13 (Monaco), the Affordable Art Fair Brussels (Belgium), the LA Art Show 2013 (Los Angeles), the Red Dot Art Fair Miami (Florida), and Artexpo 2013 (New York), the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (Japan), and Shoko-ji temple (Japan).
