Opening Night of The 2013 Athena Film Festival






A Celebration of Women and Leadership

Now in its third year, the Athena Film Festival -- a celebration of women and leadership -- is an engaged in a  weekend of feature films, documentaries and shorts that highlight women’s leadership in real life and the fictional world.  The festival was  held Feb. 7 - 10, 2013 in the heart of New York -- at Barnard, the most sought-after women’s college in the nation.

Lynda Lanker’s portraits preserve the spirit and histories of cowgirls and ranch women of the American West
A 19-year project, “Tough by Nature” includes 49 portraits in a variety of mediums, both a book and touring exhibit

EUGENE, Ore. – Both a book and a touring exhibit, “Tough by Nature” is a series of portraits of women ranchers and cowgirls from the American West. (See attached example.) Fine artist Lynda Lanker traveled the western United States for 19 years to interview the 49 women and capture their spirit through portraiture. As the American West undergoes transition and transformation, Lynda’s work preserves the histories of these contemporary western heroines.


“I undertook this project because the character of these women is right there on the surface, more so than somebody who’s got layers and layers of urban culture,” says artist Lynda Lanker. “…[Female cowhands and ranchers] had mainly been portrayed as rodeo queens in tight satin shirts with lots of sequins and fancy boots. I wanted to go deeper and show the true women instead of the stereotype.”
Lynda’s process included on-site photographs, sketches and interviews. For the portraits, she experimented with a variety of mediums, choosing the technique she felt best captured the subject’s character. The 49 portraits range in medium from charcoal, acrylic and egg tempera, to plate and stone lithography and drypoint engraving.

About Lynda Lanker
A fine artist based in Eugene, Ore., Lynda Lanker specializes in portraiture. After majoring in painting and earning a bachelor’s degree in art education from Wichita State University, she taught middle school art. In 1974, she married Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Brian Lanker. The couple moved to Eugene, Ore., where she’s since been able to concentrate on portraiture. Her commissioned portraits include five presidential portraits for the University of Oregon. She’s currently working on a portrait of Dr. Maya Angelou and a portrait of the late Oregon Supreme Court Justice Betty Roberts. More information available at lyndalanker.com.

Join Fountain for the 100 Year Anniversary of the Original Armory Show at the 69th Regiment Armory

(New York) Time is running out to join Fountain Art Fair for its 8th annual New York exhibition this March 8 - 10th, 2013.  Held at the 69th Regiment Armory, home of revolutionary 1913 Armory Show, this centennial anniversary aims to challenge and inspire with a notoriously unpredictable platform of artists, avant garde galleries, contemporary performance art and street art.  

New and returning artists will pay homage to the Armory Show’s early years with reinterpreted versions of iconic works including installation artist Miguel Ovalle’s own take on Marcel Duchamp’s controversial Nude Descending a Staircase and Don Porcella’s nod to Duchamp’s readymade Fountain, fashioned entirely of pipe cleaners.

The Pennsylvania Chautauqua sponsors an Art Show, as a community fundraiser, on the third full weekend in August.  The Pennsylvania Chautauqua is a non-profit organization established in 1892 for the purpose of "the advancement of literary, scientific, intellectual, physical and social welfare and the promotion of cultural and religious activities, recreation and entertainment".

Mount Gretna is a small Victorian community founded in the late 1800's as a summer resort.  Initially the only way for residents to reach their cottages in the woods was to travel by train.  Gretna was a stop along the Cornwall/Lebanon line.  Our streets were footpaths until automobiles became the mode of travel.  Many of the original cottages surround an open-air playhouse where numerous cultural events are held.  Our quaint atmosphere attracts many visitors every summer for music, theater, a visit to the local ice cream shop or just a walk in the woods and, of course, to the Art Show.

Festival-goers enjoy a weekend of art, crafts, entertainment and gourmet food, all "under the trees of old Chautauqua".  The show includes an Emerging Artists'area, a Kid's Art Showmusicians and strolling performers.

The exhibition will include a group of contemporary artists who uses the language and imagery of maps to communicate an array of ideas. Artists in this exhibition work in various styles, adapting, manipulating, and inventing maps to giving them new meanings. Some of them use fictional narratives and create imaginary cartographies; others conceive a work that updates the new geopolitical orders. Still others approach the map aesthetically or as material in itself. Humor too plays an important role in defining these borders. Curated by Susan Hoeltzel and Yuneikys Villalonga.
