NEW YORK - Tally Beck Contemporary will present the first solo exhibition in New York for Cambodian artist Chath pierSath. I'm Here: Chath pierSath's Solo Exhibition will open on June 26 and run through August 30, 2013. The show will feature 17 paintings and multi-media collages most of which from the last two years.

Chath pierSath is a Cambodian artist, poet and humanitarian. He lost much of his family during the Khmer Rouge regime and was forced into a labor camp as a child before fleeing to Thailand in 1979. In 1981, he immigrated to the United States. He later earned in his BA at World College West in international service and development.

pierSath works mainly with painting and collage and frequently experiments with media - often repurposing and recycling materials such as wooden slats and roof shingles. His paintings are deeply expressionistic and seem to attempt to reconcile haunting memories of his childhood with his life in the United States and humanitarian work in Cambodia.

I'm Here will open at Tally Beck Contemporary, 42 Rivington Street, on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, with an opening reception from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. sponsored by Tiger Beer-Singapore. Additionally, there will be a series of educational programs at the gallery during the run of the exhibition. On July 24, Tally Beck Contemporary will present The Art and Architecture of Angkor, a brief discussion of the visual language of Cambodia's medieval empire. On July 31, there will be a similar presentation on the history of Cambodian contemporary art. The artist will join us on August 7 for an artist's talk and Q&A.

Tally Beck Contemporary is a New York-based gallery that focuses on Asian contemporary art. Founded in 2010, the gallery emphasizes fresh expression from Asia with regular exhibitions. Tally Beck Contemporary also maintains a strong presence at international art fairs, including artMRKT San Francisco, artMRKT Hamptons, LA Art Show, Art Asia Miami, Texas Contemporary and SCOPE Basel.

Herman's' House, 40 Years in Solitary What Would You dream of? Premiere July 8th

Herman's House - Herman Wallace's Health Update <!--[if gte mso 6]> <![endif]

Trailer
Dear Friends,
We are sad to share with you the news that Herman Wallace was very recently diagnosed with liver cancer.  Our director Angad was fortunate to be able to visit with Herman this past weekend and wrote the following:

"After I heard of Herman's health condition, I can't begin to explain the feelings that began to run through my heart: despair, anger, confusion, to name a few.  Mostly I realized that I just needed to see him.  My visit took place in the infirmary where Herman is still being isolated from other prisoners, but at least he is no longer being held in his tiny cell.  He had lost about fifty pounds since I last saw him in March, and for the first time the man who had always embodied strength and vitality to me looked more like his actual age of 71.  We were both cautious in talking about his liver condition, as additional tests will be happening to determine his prognosis and possible treatment options.  Most importantly he did not want this development to distract people from the injustice that has been done to him and the thousands of others in solitary confinement.  One of the correctional officers said he would try to allow Herman to watch the film on POV on July 8th. So when you tune in, know that he may be watching it with you."

We will continue to share developments with you and ask that keep Herman in your thoughts at this time.  If you would like more information, you can read the recent post on the Solitary Watch website.

Contemplando, bronze, 12" x 11" x 7.5"
Contemplando
by Carolina Rodriguez Baptista

Opening Reception, Thursday June 27, 6:30 - 8:30 PM

The discovery of bronze led to tools, weapons and armor.
Lead by the forces of her medium, Carolina Rodriguez Baptista   follows the motion
and hardiness of the material directed by her own sense of self, femininity and strength. Baptista works through the harshness of the bronze to unearth feminine curves, tenacity and moments of self-satisfaction creating figures of action, gentleness and contemplation in her solo debut at Porter Contemporary.

Exhibition through July 27.

I use a lot of lavender paint, a pale tint of violet that can slant toward blue. The color is sometimes a light pinkish violet and can include a vast range of vibrant purples to blue tinged muted grays.
I adore all the many flowers that come in shades of lavender. There are wisteria, lilacs, lobelia, irises, lupines and of course lavender itself. We have examples of all those here in the Hamptons and it always thrills me to see them in masses.
But I see lavender everywhere and use it in almost every painting. For me a stroke of lavender paint creates the sensation of space. Depending on the mixture, violet has the optical effect of intensifying or subduing the other colors. Lavender/violet paint stimulates the eyes sensitivity to brightness and makes the humid lemon light out by the sea vibrate. That creates atmosphere. My paint box is loaded with precious tubes of violet waiting to be mixed to the correct shade and vibrancy to create the sensation of breathable air right into the painting.
See if you notice a flash of lavender/violet in the landscape as you cruise through your day.
Until next time,
Casey

"Among the most visually striking works in 'As Subject and Object' are a series of studies for and finished pages from 'Hanukkah Illuminated: A Book of Days' by California-born, Long Island-based Ellen Frank and her studio, Ellen Frank Illumination Arts.  Using micrography to create recognizable figures and gold leaf to suggest hand-painted manuscripts, Frank presents finely rendered elements -- birds, soldiers on horseback, architectural elements, a cosmographic rendering -- to illuminate the story of the Israelites' victory over the Seleucid Empire and the miracle of the lamp oil."
