September 3^rd.Thursdays Celebrates FashionFeatures Second Annual Walk A Mile In Her Shoes Fundraiser

(Pittsfield, Mass.) Fashion shines in creative ways this week at the September 20^th 3^rd.Thursdays free street festival in downtown Pittsfield's Upstreet Cultural District, and everyone's invited!

WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES3rd.Thursdays is honored to host the second annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser for the Elizabeth Freeman Center, where men walk a mile in women's shoes to raise awareness and funds to fight domestic violence. 

The Pittsfield Police and Fire Departments are in a contest to see who can field the most men walking, as well as collect the most funds and pledges. Both the Pittsfield High School and Taconic High School football teams will also be participating, along with the Pittsfield High School cross country team. 

The fundraiser kicks off at 6pm at the foot of North Street near Park Square, whre the City Stage will be located this month. On site signups and pledges are welcome and there will be a selection of large women's shoes to wear for those who do not bring their own.  Last year's Walk A Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser during 3^rd.Thursdays was a big success, with proceeds well exceeding the organizers' goals.

A CATWALK FASHION SHOW ON NORTH STREET
Palace Park (on North Street near Fenn) will sport a catwalk Thursday evening, featuring two different fashion shows, MCed and DJed by DJ BFG a/k/a Gabriel Squailia. Goodwill kicks things off showcasing affordable recycled fashion between 5pm & 6pm.  At 6:30pm, the Upstreet Fashion Show will feature the fabulous clothing shops and designers, accessories and more found in downtown Pittsfield's shops and salons.  Participating upstreet shops include Jess et Mia, Ancient Language Collection, Diedre's Special Day, Crispina, Bespoke, Kidding Around Consignment and many more!

EIGHTIES FASHION CONTEST AT THE BEACON CINEMAGet out your leg warmers and scrunchies and head over to the Beacon Cinema on Thursday for their eighties fashion contest, held just before their Throwback Thursdays screening of the eighties classic, Dirty Dancing, at 8pm. Movie tickets are just $5.

DONATE WINTER CLOTHING FOR NEW IMMIGRANTSThe Berkshire Immigrant Center is hosting a winter clothing drive to provide warm winter clothing for new immigrants, many who come ill-prepared for our New England winters. Bring your no longer needed sweaters, coats and other cozy items

Plus enjoy great live local music from the Sister City Jazz Ambassadors and Gaia Roots at the City Stage at North Street and Park Square; Johnny Pontoon plus a host of hula hoopers on the lawn of St. Joseph's Church; the young performers from Berkshire Rocks at Sottile Park; and Rock On students and teachers performing outside.

Daniel Albright to Deliver Fourth Biennial Lecture Series from October 1 to 4

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Bard College honors preeminent poet, alumnus, and former Bard faculty member Anthony Hecht ’44 with renowned scholar Daniel Albright delivering the fourth biennial Anthony Hecht Lectures in the Humanities. Albright, who is the Ernest Bernbaum Professor of Literature at Harvard University, will present the lecture series, Comparative Arts: Theory and Practice, in October. The lecture series includes: “The Purposes of Literature: Remembering, Forgetting, Pounding into Shape” on Monday, October 1, at 4:30 p.m.; “Music’s Origin, Music’s End” on Wednesday, October 3, at 6 p.m.; and “Painting as Music: The Art of Counterpoint” on Thursday, October 4, at 4:30 p.m. Free and open to the public, all lectures take place in Weis Cinema of the Bertelsmann Campus Center at Bard College. The Anthony Hecht Lectures in the Humanities at Bard College were established in 2007 to honor the memory of this preeminent poet by reflecting his lifelong interest in literature, music, the visual arts, and our cultural history. Anthony Hecht graduated from Bard in 1944 and taught at the College from 1952–55 and 1962–66. Every two years a distinguished scholar delivers a series of lectures at Bard College and in New York City that addresses works close to Hecht’s own imagination and sympathies. Each lecture series is published by Yale University Press. Previous Hecht Lecture Series speakers are literary scholar and author Christopher Ricks; historian, critic, author, and broadcaster Simon Schama; and renowned historian Garry Wills.

“It is a great honor that Anthony Hecht chose Bard as his home, both as a student and a faculty member, and we are delighted to recognize his extraordinary achievements through this important lecture series,” says Bard College President Leon Botstein.

About Daniel Abright
Daniel Albright, Ernest Bernbaum Professor of Literature at Harvard University, teaches in the Music Department as well as the English Department. He is particularly interested in the ways in which artistic media—poetry, music, painting—interact with one another; in 2000 his book Untwisting the Serpent: Music, Literature, and the Visual Arts won the Susanne M. Glasscock Humanities Book Prize for Interdisciplinary Scholarship. Among his other books are Modernism and Music: An Anthology of Sources; Quantum Poetics: Yeats, Pound, Eliot, and the Science of Modernism; and Stravinsky: The Music Box and the Nightingale.
At Harvard he teaches two Core Curriculum courses: the first, “Putting Modernism Together,” studies, for example, Impressionism through works by Monet, Debussy, and Joseph Conrad, or Surrealism through works by Apollinaire, Stravinsky, and Magritte; the second is “The History of the English Language.” He also teaches courses on opera, drama, Victorian and modernist poetry and fiction, and the relation of physics to literature.

Ground Arts Organization proudly presents Forward. Rewind. Repeat, a group exhibition featuring five artists of different disciplines from the east coast. The title obviously speaks to video, but also the act of mental and physical artistic process. Featuring Bianca Pratorius, Elizabeth Stehling, Caitlin Peluffo, Scott Malbaurn, and Charles Evans, this exhibition investigates the use of repetition in both process and outcome. These artists investigate the use of repetition in their work conceptually, or through repetitive movements and actions physically. These practices may yield patterns or rhythm in their work as a compositional strategy, or may be repeated actions generating consistently different results. Read more...
