Call to Artists - Portraiture - An Exhibition of Portraits and Figures

Burton Silverman to Judge Art League’s Upcoming Portrait Show

This spring the Art League will hold its second juried portrait exhibition. "A Common Theme: Portraiture" will open May 20 and run to June 17, 2012. Taking its title from the popular "A Common Thread" of 2009, this competition will be open to figurative works in all mediums, including photography. We are happy to announce that Burton Silverman, the renowned portrait artist, will be our judge. The deadline for entries is April 2.
Burton Silverman is one of America's foremost portrait painters. Whether working in oil, watercolor or pastel, he has concentrated on, as he puts it, "the landscape of the human face". He has completed countless commissions of notable patrons and has had thirty-one solo shows in major cities across the country. His work has appeared in national and international exhibitions, including the National Portrait Gallery, the National Academy Museum, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Mexico City Museum of Art and the Royal Academy of Art in London, garnering numerous prizes along the way, among them the Ranger Purchase Award at the National Academy, twice-in 1965 and 1983.
His paintings are represented in nearly two dozen public collections, including the Brooklyn Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Mint Museum, the Delaware Museum, the New Britain Museum of American Art and the Smithsonian's National Museum of American Art and National Portrait Gallery, as well as private collections in both the U.S. and Europe.
The Art League is privileged to have Burton Silverman judge this show.

Hosting approximately 350 artists, the Uptown Art Fair caters to tourists, art enthusiasts, artists, and festival-goers from around the country.

Uptown Minneapolis is an eclectic mix of commercial, retail, and residential properties in South Minneapolis.  The intersection of Lake Street and Hennepin Avenue is the center of a lively, upbeat business district and is one of the busiest intersections in the state of Minnesota, creating the perfect location for a fine art festival. Lake Harriet, Lake of the Isles, and Cedar Lake are only a few blocks away, making Uptown's tree-lined streets both welcoming and walkable.

The primary focus of the Uptown Art Fair is the juried exhibition of gallery quality fine art.  Additionally, the event offers family activities including a youth art fair, day and evening performances, a wine garden, and high quality outdoor food vending.
The Uptown Art Fair brings art to the people, draws visitors to Uptown, and provides a showcase and sales outlet for both professional and amateur artists from around the country. As the Uptown Association's primary fundraising event, the Uptown Art Fair is an economic engine for the community, generating revenue that pays for Uptown projects including community clean ups, marketing and education seminars, extra security officers, donations to local causes and neighborhood organizations, and other community building activities.

Viviane Romabldi Seppey: Jurong, 2009  white and yellow pages from Singapore phonebooks, 38x38

An international exhibit of varying media from Japan, Germany, Korea, Australia, the United States, Czech Republic, Cayman Islands, Estonia, Japan, and Italy, Still Spot is a group show of twelve artists, who offer works that are quiet at first look, but upon closer inspection will reveal intensity of either technique, material, or affect.
These diverse practices include labor-intensive precise cuts in paper, hundreds of magazine eyes behind a translucent vellum veil, rock-hard slate that has been filed down meticulously against its nature, and tiny five-inch square drawings that are so intricate that they are at the very limits of our ability to see.  At the other extreme is a room-size installation where we stand in the midst of hundreds of nine-foot high skinny strips of paper, so we become lost in the white quietude.  This totality of works is assembled to bring the gallery visitor into a "still spot" in the midst of dynamic Manhattan, a momentary oasis in the center of our busy lives.
