Conversations and Salon: Art Basel announces talks program for 2013 edition in Miami Beach

Conversations and Salon: Art Basel announces talks program for 2013 edition in Miami Beach

Bringing together the world's leading artists, museum directors, collectors, and curators, Art Basel in Miami Beach’s daily line up of events offers dynamic dialogs between prominent members of the international art world. Featured artists include Doug Aitken, Cory Arcangel, Dara Birnbaum, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Jim Drain, Olafur Eliasson, Tracey Emin, Cécile B. Evans, Naomi Fisher, Mario Garcia Torres, Kate Gilmore, Ellen Harvey, Camille Henrot, Brian Khek, Joseph Kosuth, Alicja Kwade, Sharon Louden, Rashaad Newsome, Mungo Thomson, Ry Rocklen, Gabriel Sierra, Frances Stark, Brian Tolle, Erika Verzutti, Allyson Vieira and Robert Whitman

This year's Conversations program in Miami Beach launches on Thursday, December 5 with the Premiere Artist Talk by the American multimedia artist Doug Aitken, discussing his recent nomadic project ‘Station to Station' in conversation with Artforum Editor Michelle Kuo

The 2013 Conversations program features a particularly strong line-up of leading international museum directors and curators. Drawing on recent experiences with transnational initiatives and collaborations, a panel of leading curators and museum directors, including Patrick Charpenel, Chris Dercon, Chus Martinez and Alexandra Munroe, explores the benefits and pitfalls of museums going global. The program includes the continuation of a series launched at Art Basel in Hong Kong earlier this year 'The Artist and the Gallerist' with a conversation between the artist Abraham Cruzvillegas and Monica Manzutto and Jose Kuri, the founders of kurimanzutto, Mexico City. The series concludes with a panel discussion among artists including Cory Arcangel, Cécile B. Evans, Camille Henrot, and Robert Whitman, whose work relates to technological developments and digital realm moderated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-Director, Serpentine Gallery, London. The Conversations series is presented by Absolut.

An open platform for shorter, often informal presentations, the afternoon Salon program features artist talks, panel discussions, lectures and book launches with curators, museum directors, lawyers, and artists, including from the show’s Public and Film sectors. Topics are as varied as the participants, ranging from artist talks, a presentation on Constructive Art Criticism in Latin America, to a roundtable conversation on the role of small-scale arts institutions and a discussion entitled ‘Bankrupt Cities. Endangered Museums: Learning From the Case of the Detroit Institute of Arts’. A series of engaging pairings – the artist Tracey Emin with Sir Norman Rosenthal; Olafur Eliasson with Klaus Biesenbach; and Josh Baer of the Baer Faxt with the artist Joseph Kosuth – promise to provide unique insight into the artists practice, the balance between the art market and art history.
Conversations takes place daily from Thursday, December 5 to Sunday, December 8, 10am to 11:30am – and Salon daily Thursday, December 5 to Sunday, December 8, from 1pm to 7pm (Sunday to 4pm). Both programs take place in the Hall C auditorium of the Miami Beach Convention Center. Talks from the Conversations program are free to the public. Art Basel entry tickets include admission to Salon talks.

The full talks program is available at artbasel.com/miamibeach/talks
High-quality videos of all Conversations and Salon talks will be available at artbasel.com/miamibeach/talks

Film: Art Basel announces 2013 program

Film: Art Basel announces 2013 program

From December 4 to December 8, 2013, Art Basel presents a premier program of films by and about artists, selected by David Gryn, Director of London's Artprojx, and Zurich collector This Brunner. Brunner’s feature film selection is the United States premiere of 'Nan Goldin – I Remember Your Face' (2013) by Sabine Lidl. Gryn's 2013 program presents over 70 film and video works drawn from the show's participating galleries, including works by Dara Birnbaum, Martin Creed, Rineke Dijkstra, Joan Jonas, Yinka Shonibare MBE, Mickalene Thomas and Kehinde Wiley.

The United States premiere of 'Nan Goldin – I Remember Your Face' (2013) by Sabine Lidl will be screened in the presence of Nan Goldin and Sabine Lidl, and will be followed by a Q&A with the artist and film director. Along with an exemplary insight into the seminal American photographer’s life, the film offers viewers a candid, sensitive and at times humorous perspective on contemporary culture. The feature film has been selected by This Brunner, a curator of Art Basel's Film sector in Basel since 1992 and for the Miami Beach show since 2002. 'Nan Goldin – I Remember Your Face' (2013) will be shown at the Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach at 8.30 pm on Friday, December 6, 2013. Entry is free, but seating is limited.

The third edition of David Gryn’s selection for Art Basel's Miami Beach show, whose Lead Partner is UBS, explores the collaborative creative process via intersections between visual artists, composers, musicians, choreographers, dancers and animators. Framed within eight distinct screening programs, the program highlights an international selection of emerging and established artists. Alongside works by leading international artists such as Shezad Dawood, Rineke Dijkstra, Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg, Joan Jonas, Karen Kilimnik and Shirin Neshat, highlights include the international premiere of Martin Creed's new film 'Work No. 1700' (2013), Kehinde Wiley’s 'World Stage: Jamaica' (2013), and a selection of works by Yinka Shonibare MBE exploring the interface between music and dance. Dara Birnbaum presents 'Arabesque' (2011/2013), specifically re-edited for the program. Art Basel's Salon program will see Dara Birnbaum in conversation with David Gryn on December 6 at 1pm.
Outdoor screenings of the program take place at SoundScape Park on the 7,000-square-foot outdoor projection wall of the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center from December 4 to December 7. Admission to Film at SoundScape Park is free. Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs. A program that includes nine additional films will be presented within five viewing pods inside the Miami Beach Convention Center. Access to the viewing pods is free with an entry ticket to the show.

Kabinett: Curated group and solo exhibitions spotlighted at Art Basel in Miami Beach

Kabinett: Curated group and solo exhibitions spotlighted at Art Basel in Miami Beach

A diverse range of curatorial concepts drive the Kabinett sector at the 2013 Art Basel show in Miami Beach. Chosen by the show's Selection Committee, 25 galleries present tightly focused exhibitions within a designated section of their booths, including group and solo shows by historical figures and emerging artists.

A celebrated sector of the Miami Beach show since 2005, Kabinett gives gallerists a strong platform to display the curatorial aspect of their work. Bridging the gap between performance and the exhibition space, Kavi Gupta Gallery features Theaster Gates’s 'Migration Rickshaw for German Living', a presentation of one of the 12 ballads for the Huguenot House, which the artist created for Documenta 13 in Kassel, Germany. Henrique Faria Fine Art’s exhibition ‘Body: Air, Water and Earth’ documents Yeni and Nan’s most emblematic photographs, video art and the groundbreaking action-based art from the 70s and 80s. Luciana Brito Galeria exhibits the results of Marina Abramović’s extensive research on the Brazilian countryside, with a series of works never seen before – the groundwork for a project planned for Brazil in 2015.

Kabinett’s appeal reflects the potential to discover unknown artists as well as to rediscover established artists. Hirschl & Adler Modern presents a selection of drawings from the remarkable Outsider artist James Edward Deeds, while Francis M. Naumann Fine Art features a thoughtful consideration of Man Ray’s work as a printmaker. A rare series of small scale painted wooden objects of the 1950s and early 60s by Leon Polk Smith is on show at Valerie Carberry Gallery. Yvon Lambert's Kabinett is dedicated to an installation by Damir Očko focussing on a poem by the artist titled 'We saw nothing but the uniform blue of the Sky'. Alexander Gray Associates presents a focused selection of historical works by Luis Camnitzer, executed between 1972–73.

Reflecting Latin America's vibrant art scenes, Kabinett presents a wide range of work by artists from and tied to the continent. Galerie 1900-2000 dedicates its Kabinett presentation to drawings by Marius de Zayas, a Mexican artist, writer and art gallery owner who was influential in the New York arts circles of the 1910s and 1920s. Galerie Thomas Schulte features a selection of new works across a variety of media, including found objects and assemblage by Danilo Dueñas. Presenting Raymundo Colares alongside José Bento, A Gentil Carioca juxtaposes two generations of Brazilian artists. For his solo exhibition at Rhona Hoffman Gallery, Luis Gispert continues his meticulous anthropological study of American subcultures to re-appropriate traditional codes of photography and 20th century sculpture. Exhibited works portray Gispert’s fascination with the fetishization of Latin American modernism, Latin American music, and the Black Power movement of the 1960s. Additional highlights in Kabinett include Sam Francis’s historic paintings at Van Doren Waxter, Sean Scully’s pastels on paper at Galerie Lelong and recent works from Mel Kendrick’s complex sculptural practice, plus works on paper, at David Nolan Gallery. Lehmann Maupin presents the gestural sculptures of Tracey Emin’s latest series alongside a series of self-portraits. Al Taylor’s prints and mixed media works at Niels Borch Jensen Galerie, presented in collaboration with David Zwirner, draw into question the perception of reality by blurring the real, the imagined and the illusional. A related inquiry is found in Galerie Urs Meile’s presentation of Hu Qingyan’s 'Edition of 8', eight marble sculptures carved precisely according to the original model of a single rock that the artist selected in Hebei, China. Art : Concept’s installation of works by Richard Fauguet includes a Moleskine notebook containing 117 drawings created through
frottage – rubbing over a textured surface – that creates a dialog on the nature and perception of the image. Further presentations include a sculpture and neon by Claire Fontaine at Metro Pictures, and Richard Meier at Galerie Gmurzynska.

Finally, Kabinett’s format allows perspectives on an artist’s long-term practice. Galerie Nathalie Obadia’s solo show of Martin Barré presents four works from between 1959 and 1992, showing the evolution and influence of his work over more than 40 years. Mehdi Chouakri’s exhibition of recent works by Gerold Miller reflects a dramatic shift in the work of an artist concerned with the most fundamental questions of sculpture, relief, painting, and installation. Kicken Berlin presents a survey on the theme of night time, made manifest through a tightly curated selection of photographers from all over the world, while Galerie Krinzinger shows a selection of artists from the gallery's long-running international residency program.

The full list of artists presented as part of Kabinett is available at artbasel.com/miamibeach/kabinett

Fine Art Magazine Recaps Art Basel - Miami Beach 2012

Fine Art Magazine Recaps Art Basel - Miami Beach 2012

Art Basel. Opening night was a frenzy of glamor, excitement & ...the rich flavor of Art buyers and sellers coming together to see and be seen at one of the premiere social art events of the year. This years Art Basel started with a strong attendance and sales.

Miami was turned into a sea of people going to and from the 50 some odd art shows spun out for the the original Art Miami  in 1992. Dealers, buyers, collectors, artists , journalists, and citizenry, taking in the heat generated for the moment.  Jamie Forbes Fine Art Magazine

Art Basel enters its second decade in Miami Beach with a display of premier quality works and strong programming across the city

Miami Beach, Florida, USA – The 2012 edition of Art Basel in Miami Beach officially closed, Sunday, December 9. Praised by critics, exhibitors and visitors as Art Basel’s most serious presentation in Miami Beach to date, its galleries across the board reported consistent sales throughout the week.

The show, whose main sponsor is UBS, again attracted 50,000 visitors, generating an attendance of 70,000 over the five show days. Art Basel in Miami Beach was visited by over 130 museum and institution groups from across the world. Renowned private collectors from the Americas, Europe and emerging markets returned, and were joined by new collectors from around the globe.

As Art Basel marked its second decade in Miami Beach, more than 250 leading galleries from  31 countries from North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia presented the highest quality of work at the show, underlining its seriousness. Given a particularly strong representation of Modern material at the show, as well as the entry of a dynamic selection of younger galleries – including nine that were newly accepted to the fair from NADA– visitors explored 11 decades and over 110 years of art history within the Miami Beach Convention Center. Additionally, collaborations with local and international partners ensured a diverse and deep program of art events, from Art Basel Conversations and Art Salon to Art Public,  Art Video and Art Film, making this edition a celebration of the artists and their galleries.

The experience of galleries proved highly positive:

Stefania Bortolami, Bortolami Gallery, New York
'After the destruction that the gallery experienced from Hurricane Sandy it is significant that we
were able to show at Art Basel Miami Beach. All of our efforts were rewarded by meaningful
sales at the fair and wonderful exposure for our younger artists.'

Alia Fattouh, Lombard Freid Gallery, New York
'I would say that the fair comes at a crucial time for many New York galleries that have been hit
by the hurricane and the flexibility that Art Basel showed in these exceptional circumstances has
been particularly appreciated and helpful.'

Silke Thomas, Galerie Thomas, Munich
'Art Basel Miami Beach 2012 has again been a great fair. There were interesting new collectors
and sales. We really enjoyed being part of the show.'

Sean Kelly, Sean Kelly Gallery, New York
'The preview of Art Basel Miami Beach was the best first day the gallery has ever had at any art
fair...ever. We literally had nothing left but to sell off the iPads. We sold an Antony Gormley for
300,000 GBP, a Los Carpinteros for 110,000 Euros, and every Terence Koh we brought. We
also met new collectors and viewers genuinely interested in our artists. An astonishing fair!'

Adam Sheffer, Cheim & Read, New York
'We were delighted again this year by the results at Art Basel Miami Beach. It remains the gold
standard of the international art fair circuit.'

Marc Payot, Hauser & Wirth, Zurich, London and New York
'At a moment when art fairs are almost too numerous to count, Art Basel Miami Beach stands out
in attracting an extraordinary number of museum curators and directors from across the entire
United States and around the world. With that in mind, we presented an exhibition-like stand that
brought clarity and very high impact to new works by just two artists - Roni Horn and Guillermo
Kuitca. We are now engaged in talks about several important institutional projects for both artists.
So for Hauser & Wirth, this year's fair was a major success not only in commercial terms, but
also in the opportunity to connect our artists' with museums internationally.'

Steven P. Henry, Paula Cooper Gallery, New York
'We approached the show in a very serious way this year, with a strong curatorial view. We
noticed that there was a lot of thought that went into the presentations around us as well. The
general statue of the Miami Beach edition has really risen to a level comparable to Basel.'

Hella Pohl, Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Salzburg, Paris
'There was a very strong demand for works by Georg Baselitz and Robert Longo. Our first sale, a
work by Jason Martin, happened only a few minutes after the fair opened.'

Elyse Goldberg, James Cohan Gallery, New York
'This year's Art Basel Miami Beach was a truly wonderful fair. We were successful in placing
many works in collections both public and private, as well as meeting collectors, curators, and
writers new to our gallery'

Thomas Dane, Thomas Dane Gallery, London
'We have had good fair in Miami. We had success in selling works by Arturo Herrera, Glenn
Ligon and Alexandre da Cunha. Miami has always been an important fair for us and this year
was no exception.'

Maho Kubota, SCAI The Bathhouse, Tokyo
'This is the only American fair where we show. We had a clear strategy to present only Japanese
artists from multiple generations and through this we were able to share the diversity of
Japanese art with a large number of viewers and have connected with many new and diverse
collectors in return. The show's high quality allows exhibitors to showcase works as they deserve
to be seen.'

Pedro Mendes, Mendes Wood, São Paulo
'Miami for us is a junction between the North and the South. It's almost a port where everyone
gathers. At the show in Miami, we've connected with collectors and curators from so many
different countries and throughout the region that in a sense Art Basel Miami Beach becomes a
window for Latin American thought, its art dialogue and practice.'

Paul Kasmin, Paul Kasmin Gallery, New York
'This year the fair drew primarily new international clients for us and it was a great success for
many of our artists. It was a particularly remarkable year for Iván Navarro, with the fair's curated
programs for Art Kabinett and Art Public.'

Flávio Cohn, DAN galleria, São Paulo
'We are very pleased with our participation at the show and have had very positive responses to
our presentations. We achieved good results, even better than we had hoped for. The interest in
the Latin American and Brazilian artists we represent has definitely grown over the past two
years.'

Jorge Mara, La Galería Jorge Mara La Ruche, Buenos Aires
'This is our third time at Art Basel in Miami Beach - and it has been the best fair for us. Over the
past two years visitors to the fair have come to see and buy, and now they are coming back
again. We bring artists to the show not many people outside of Argentina or Latin America know
and we provide the intellectual background to get to know these artists.'

Aurelia Bourquard, Press & Communication, Art: Concept, Paris
'The fair went well, the sales were good and we met extremely interesting collectors from Europe
as well as the Americas.'

For the second year running, Art Public, produced in collaboration with the Bass Museum of Art,
turned Collins Park into an outdoor exhibition space with large-scale sculpture, video, installation
and live performances. For this year's edition, the sector’s curator Christine Y. Kim, Associate
Curator of Contemporary Art (LACMA) and Co-founder, Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND)
brought even more complex works to Miami Beach and extended the exhibition space into the
sky, across which Dave McKenzie’s airplane carrying a banner offering different marriage
proposals every day. A highlight of the week, Art Public Opening Night on December 6 was free
and open to the public, offering a program of performances by Jason and Alicia Hall Moran with
Brandon Ross, My Barbarian and Alex Israel. For more information please visit
artbasel.com/public.

Art Film was again selected by Zurich film connoisseur This Brunner and presented the
feature-length documentary film 'Painters Painting' (1973) by Emile de Antonio on the New
York art scene from 1940 to 1970. For more information please visit artbasel.com/film.

Steering debate and discussions not only on the state of the art market but the arts in general,
Art Basel's daily program of talks offered its patrons and the general public another platform to
engage with art in a meaningful way. Many leading artworld figures took part in the morning
Art Basel Conversations. The Premiere Artist Talk featured legendary artist Richard Tuttle in
conversation with Chris Dercon, Director Tate Modern, London. Further topics included the
'Public/Private' panel discussing 'The Encyclopedic Museum' on the Friday of the show.
Saturday’s panel focused on 'Why Japanese Post-War Art Matters Now'. On Sunday the 'Artistic
Practice' series presented 'The Artist as Musician'. Art Basel Conversations is presented by
Absolut Art Bureau, responsible for The Absolut Company’s international art initiatives.

Art Salon, which includes shorter presentations each afternoon, featured 20 talks, ranging in
topics from the Latin American art market to 'New Perspectives from the Edge of Arabia'.
Taken together, both talks programs represent an essential aspect of Art Basel’s concept,
reflecting the idea that the show is not only a marketplace for artworks, but also a meeting
place for all of the artworld’s key players.

Videos of Art Basel Conversations and Art Salon are being made available by Absolut Art
Bureau and can be viewed on artbasel.com/conversations and absolutartbureau.com.
