Jason Kowalski: Notes from the West Opening Friday, September 18, 2026 Westbound Wagon, 2026, oil & mixed media on panel, 25 x 40 in On View: September 18 – November 18, 2026 Last Friday Railyard Art Walk Reception: Friday, September 25, 2026, from 5:00–7:00 PM ​ LewAllen Galleries is pleased to present Notes from the West, an exhibition featuring new works by Jason Kowalski that capture the lingering remnants, transient architecture, and quiet nostalgia of the American West. ​ Kowalski’s reverential depictions of mid-20th century Americana—from neon-lit motels and sun-bleached filling stations to vintage cars and roadside diners—operate as powerful physical archives of collective memory. Painted with meticulous realism, soft atmospheric light, and gentle color palettes, his compositions honor the passage of time without artificial romanticism. The works are rendered with a unique painterly finesse and deep reverence for the people who once populated these bygone roadside vestiges of an American Dream of the past in which Kowalski presents both a sense of their remaining contemporary beauty and also a feeling for the spirit of what that dream must have meant in those places for those people working hard in the decades of early and mid-20th century America. ​ Neon Icon, 2026, oil & mixed media on panel, 54 x 36 in American Idyll, 2026, oil & mixed media on panel, 84 x 56 in Rural Reverie, 2026, oil & mixed media on panel, 60 x 48 in​ Integral to Kowalski's studio process is his embedding of physical paper ephemera—vintage map fragments, ledger entries, old receipts, and handwritten notes—directly into the panel surface before painting. These subtle collaged textures serve as compositional anchors and poetic conduits, bridging the present with the past and inviting the viewer into a deeper, personal contemplation of shared American heritage. By placing these hyper-detailed animal sitters against stylized, culturally loaded stage sets—such as manicured topiary gardens, Southwestern textiles, and pre-Columbian reliefs—he creates a delightfully incongruous tension between human artifice and the natural world. Jivan Lee: Multitudes​ On View: July 31 – September 12, 2026 Jivan Lee, Down to County Line, 2026, Oil on panel, 60 x 48 in Opening Artist Reception: Friday, August 7, 2026 from 5 to 7 Celebrated landscape painter, Jivan Lee, premiers his tenth new exhibition entitled Multitudes at LewAllen Galleries of dynamic new paintings celebrating New Mexico’s wide horizons, stunning streams, soaring mountains, verdant plains, dramatic sunsets and clouds, and intimate topography. The works explore the vibrant, ever-shifting light of Northern New Mexico—a region he has painted throughout his 25-year career. Moving fluently between monumental landscapes and nuanced studies, Multitudes highlights Lee’s celebrated ability to capture both the tactile presence of nature and its quiet, underlying spirit. Applying oil paint with spatulas, brushes, paper towels, and his bare hands, he transforms raw pigment into a muscular, sculptural impasto. Up close, his surfaces read as an energetic mosaic of unblended color cells; from a distance, they cohere into luminous, persuasive studies of light and space. Jivan Lee, Quartzite - Midday, 2026, Oil on panel, 48 x 36 in In Multitudes, Lee deepens his investigation of time, place, and perception—anchoring the viewer at the intersection of deep geological time and fleeting, ephemeral moments. Each painting stands as a witness to a specific instant, capturing the permanence of ancient mountain ridges juxtaposed against the swift movement of a passing shadow or a gathering storm. One sees from all these things, in all their “multitudes”, a sense of how America the Beautiful is made and how in Lee’s paintings a gift of awe is conferred. Holding degrees in painting and environmental policy from Bard College, Lee is a former UNM Taos instructor and founder of the Project for Art and the Environment. His work is exhibited nationally and featured widely in publications including Plein Air Magazine, Western Art & Architecture, and Southwest Contemporary. ​
