Film: Art Basel announces 2013 program 

From December 4 to December 8, 2013, Art Basel presents a premier program of films by and about artists, selected by David Gryn, Director of London's Artprojx, and Zurich collector This Brunner. Brunner’s feature film selection is the United States premiere of 'Nan Goldin – I Remember Your Face' (2013) by Sabine Lidl. Gryn's 2013 program presents over 70 film and video works drawn from the show's participating galleries, including works by Dara Birnbaum, Martin Creed, Rineke Dijkstra, Joan Jonas, Yinka Shonibare MBE, Mickalene Thomas and Kehinde Wiley. 

The United States premiere of 'Nan Goldin – I Remember Your Face' (2013) by Sabine Lidl will be screened in the presence of Nan Goldin and Sabine Lidl, and will be followed by a Q&A with the artist and film director. Along with an exemplary insight into the seminal American photographer’s life, the film offers viewers a candid, sensitive and at times humorous perspective on contemporary culture. The feature film has been selected by This Brunner, a curator of Art Basel's Film sector in Basel since 1992 and for the Miami Beach show since 2002. 'Nan Goldin – I Remember Your Face' (2013) will be shown at the Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach at 8.30 pm on Friday, December 6, 2013. Entry is free, but seating is limited.

The third edition of David Gryn’s selection for Art Basel's Miami Beach show, whose Lead Partner is UBS, explores the collaborative creative process via intersections between visual artists, composers, musicians, choreographers, dancers and animators. Framed within eight distinct screening programs, the program highlights an international selection of emerging and established artists. Alongside works by leading international artists such as Shezad Dawood, Rineke Dijkstra, Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg, Joan Jonas, Karen Kilimnik and Shirin Neshat, highlights include the international premiere of Martin Creed's new film 'Work No. 1700' (2013), Kehinde Wiley’s 'World Stage: Jamaica' (2013), and a selection of works by Yinka Shonibare MBE exploring the interface between music and dance. Dara Birnbaum presents 'Arabesque' (2011/2013), specifically re-edited for the program. Art Basel's Salon program will see Dara Birnbaum in conversation with David Gryn on December 6 at 1pm. 

Outdoor screenings of the program take place at SoundScape Park on the 7,000-square-foot outdoor projection wall of the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center from December 4 to December 7. Admission to Film at SoundScape Park is free. Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs. A program that includes nine additional films will be presented within five viewing pods inside the Miami Beach Convention Center. Access to the viewing pods is free with an entry ticket to the show.

Kabinett: Curated group and solo exhibitions spotlighted at Art Basel in Miami Beach 

A diverse range of curatorial concepts drive the Kabinett sector at the 2013 Art Basel show in Miami Beach. Chosen by the show's Selection Committee, 25 galleries present tightly focused exhibitions within a designated section of their booths, including group and solo shows by historical figures and emerging artists. 

A celebrated sector of the Miami Beach show since 2005, Kabinett gives gallerists a strong platform to display the curatorial aspect of their work. Bridging the gap between performance and the exhibition space, Kavi Gupta Gallery features Theaster Gates’s 'Migration Rickshaw for German Living', a presentation of one of the 12 ballads for the Huguenot House, which the artist created for Documenta 13 in Kassel, Germany. Henrique Faria Fine Art’s exhibition ‘Body: Air, Water and Earth’ documents Yeni and Nan’s most emblematic photographs, video art and the groundbreaking action-based art from the 70s and 80s. Luciana Brito Galeria exhibits the results of Marina Abramović’s extensive research on the Brazilian countryside, with a series of works never seen before – the groundwork for a project planned for Brazil in 2015. 

Kabinett’s appeal reflects the potential to discover unknown artists as well as to rediscover established artists. Hirschl & Adler Modern presents a selection of drawings from the remarkable Outsider artist James Edward Deeds, while Francis M. Naumann Fine Art features a thoughtful consideration of Man Ray’s work as a printmaker. A rare series of small scale painted wooden objects of the 1950s and early 60s by Leon Polk Smith is on show at Valerie Carberry Gallery. Yvon Lambert's Kabinett is dedicated to an installation by Damir Očko focussing on a poem by the artist titled 'We saw nothing but the uniform blue of the Sky'. Alexander Gray Associates presents a focused selection of historical works by Luis Camnitzer, executed between 1972–73. 

Reflecting Latin America's vibrant art scenes, Kabinett presents a wide range of work by artists from and tied to the continent. Galerie 1900-2000 dedicates its Kabinett presentation to drawings by Marius de Zayas, a Mexican artist, writer and art gallery owner who was influential in the New York arts circles of the 1910s and 1920s. Galerie Thomas Schulte features a selection of new works across a variety of media, including found objects and assemblage by Danilo Dueñas. Presenting Raymundo Colares alongside José Bento, A Gentil Carioca juxtaposes two generations of Brazilian artists. For his solo exhibition at Rhona Hoffman Gallery, Luis Gispert continues his meticulous anthropological study of American subcultures to re-appropriate traditional codes of photography and 20th century sculpture. Exhibited works portray Gispert’s fascination with the fetishization of Latin American modernism, Latin American music, and the Black Power movement of the 1960s. Additional highlights in Kabinett include Sam Francis’s historic paintings at Van Doren Waxter, Sean Scully’s pastels on paper at Galerie Lelong and recent works from Mel Kendrick’s complex sculptural practice, plus works on paper, at David Nolan Gallery. Lehmann Maupin presents the gestural sculptures of Tracey Emin’s latest series alongside a series of self-portraits. Al Taylor’s prints and mixed media works at Niels Borch Jensen Galerie, presented in collaboration with David Zwirner, draw into question the perception of reality by blurring the real, the imagined and the illusional. A related inquiry is found in Galerie Urs Meile’s presentation of Hu Qingyan’s 'Edition of 8', eight marble sculptures carved precisely according to the original model of a single rock that the artist selected in Hebei, China. Art : Concept’s installation of works by Richard Fauguet includes a Moleskine notebook containing 117 drawings created through 

frottage – rubbing over a textured surface – that creates a dialog on the nature and perception of the image. Further presentations include a sculpture and neon by Claire Fontaine at Metro Pictures, and Richard Meier at Galerie Gmurzynska. 

Finally, Kabinett’s format allows perspectives on an artist’s long-term practice. Galerie Nathalie Obadia’s solo show of Martin Barré presents four works from between 1959 and 1992, showing the evolution and influence of his work over more than 40 years. Mehdi Chouakri’s exhibition of recent works by Gerold Miller reflects a dramatic shift in the work of an artist concerned with the most fundamental questions of sculpture, relief, painting, and installation. Kicken Berlin presents a survey on the theme of night time, made manifest through a tightly curated selection of photographers from all over the world, while Galerie Krinzinger shows a selection of artists from the gallery's long-running international residency program.

Spring Exhibition: Contemporary Cartographies

Contemporary Cartographies      February 5 - May 11, 2013 Reception: Monday, March 18, 2013, 6 - 8pm    Kevin Van Aelst, Isabel Barbuzza, Doug Beube, Gail Biederman, Margaret Cusack, Sage Dawson, Lisa Corinne Davis, Dalia Elsayed, Charley Friedman, Wopo Holup, Meridith McNeal, Steven Millar, Simonetta Moro, Paula Scher, Karen Shaw, and Dannielle Tegeder    The exhibition will include a group of contemporary artists who uses the language and imagery of maps to communicate an array of ideas. Artists in this exhibition work in various styles, adapting, manipulating, and inventing maps to giving them new meanings. Some of them use fictional narratives and create imaginary cartographies; others conceive a work that updates the new geopolitical orders. Still others approach the map aesthetically or as material in itself. Humor too plays an important role in defining these borders. Curated by Susan Hoeltzel and Yuneikys Villalonga.

Andrea Mary Marshall's "Gia Condo", opens this Thursday at Allegra LaViola Gallery

Andrea Mary Marshall Gia Condo Andrea Mary Marshall, Self Portrait as Gia Condo, 2012, Oil on Poplar Panel, 30" x 21" January 17 – February 16, 2013 Opening: Thursday, January 17, 6-8PM Allegra LaViola Gallery is pleased to present Gia Condo, an exhibition of painting, photography, video and performance by Andrea Mary Marshall. The show opens this Thursday, January 17th, and will include a performance on the opening night, as well as additional performances through the duration of the exhibit.   In her second solo show, Andrea Mary Marshall approaches the enigma of the Mona Lisa through a series of self-portraits rendered in diverse media. The Mona Lisa is the world’s most recognizable and replicated painting. Gia Condo explores the identity of this fascinating “subject of all subjects” by paying homage to artists previously inspired by da Vinci’s iconic image. Marshall draws inspiration from Dali, Duchamp and Warhol’s renderings as well as the myriad theories surrounding the identity of the sitter. Out of the competing ideas, the character of Gia Condo emerges, portrayed by Marshall herself. Marshall transforms the subject into the painter and allows the muse to become the master. In her thirteen Mona Lisa paintings, Marshall duplicates the material and size of da Vinci’s original, while altering the composition significantly. Additionally, there are six photographic portraits, a short film and film stills. As she takes us through several stages of Gia Condo’s transformations, the darker, masculine energy of the notorious woman is released. Marshall does not shy away from the power of drag as a transformative tool, and in doing so addresses the masculine side of femininity. While her previous series of work, Toxic Women, portrayed women as victims, Gia Condo celebrates a dynamic confidence and self-acceptance. The artists Marshall references in Gia Condo are male, with one notable exception. At the film’s finale, Gia Condo departs from her lineage of male painters and assumes the role of a Guerrilla Girl. It is at this moment that Marshall liberates Gia Condo from the frame of the painting, film and photographs and launches her into the world of flesh and blood. For the duration of the exhibition, Marshall will perform as Gia Condo, initiating with the opening on January 17th. Using the Gallery’s lower level as a studio, Gia will recreate da Vinci’s well known masterpieces in her own style. Visitors to the gallery are invited to watch as Gia Condo steps out of the canvas and takes up her own brush. What she will create remains entirely her own choice. Andrea Mary Marshall received her BFA from Parsons School of Design and has exhibited at Grey Area, New York, NY; Phillips de Pury & Company, New York, NY; Volume Gallery, New York, New York and Stephan Stoyanov Gallery, New York, NY.  Her work has been reviewed in Scene Magazine, Smug Magazine, Artlog, Opening Ceremony, Hi-Fructose, PaperMag and StyleLikeU.  She lives and works in New York City. This is her second solo exhibition with Allegra LaViola Gallery.
