FOUNTAIN NY RETURNS TO 69th REGIMENT ARMORY TO MARK 100 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF ORIGINAL ARMORY SHOW

Fountain Partners with WAGMAG, Brooklyn Art Guide, to Make History in the Original House of DADA
(New York)  Fountain Art Fair announces its return to the 69th Regiment Armory for its 8th annual New York exhibition March 8 10, 2013. The art fair celebrates the centennial anniversary at the 1913 Armory Show’s original location. From the initial Armory Show to Marcel Duchamp’s controversial readymade, "Fountain," exhibited under the same roof in 1917, this historic venue is perfectly suited to Fountain’s reputation for presenting delightfully scandalous and unexpected platform of alternative artists, galleries, street art and performance art. Please find application details online here.

“It’s an incredible honor for Fountain to be carrying the torch for the universally heralded 1913 Armory Show, the first exhibition of modern art in the United States. We strive to be harbingers of the revolutionary. Fountain will certainly honor the legend by continuing the tradition of our predecessors at the 69th Regiment Armory during this centennial celebration.” ~ Fountain Co-Founders David Kesting and Johnny Leo

Hailed as the destination fair for savvy collectors of the up-and-coming, Fountain prides itself on presenting a diverse platform of progressive galleries, independent artists, unpredictable performances and internationally renowned street artists. A handful of booths remain: visit Fountain’s website at www.fountainartfair.com to access NY 2013 exhibitor applications for the chance to be part of this historic event.

This exhibition is made possible with the cooperation of WAGMAG, the not-for-profit guide to Brooklyn galleries that has promoted independent curators’ visions from Kings County for the last 11 years.

Fountain welcomes new and returning exhibitors for its New York 2013 exhibition, including: Amanda Hudson Photography; Asan Gallery; Correa, Hagberg, Jimenez, Menard and Stewart; Dacia Gallery; Davis Art Services; EMP Gallery; Front Room Gallery; Gallery 4; Gallery DEN; Grace Exhibition Space; Greyegg McKenna; iArt-4 Collective; Kaboose Gallery; Leo Kesting Gallery; Lindsay Carron; Martha Raoli Project; MCCAIG + WELLES; Mighty Tanaka; Murder Lounge; Pete’s Fingers; Republic Worldwide; Sarah Trouche; Solo(s) Project House; Station 16; The Marketplace Gallery; The Parlour Bushwick; Yes Gallery.

Fountain remains the only exhibition that regularly features a curated selection of contemporary performance art, highlighting Brooklyn-based performance art gallery Grace Exhibition Space as curator. This past December at Fountain’s Art Basel Miami Beach 2012 exhibition, Grace Space featured radical Estonian collective NON GRATA, who thrilled late night crowds with live human branding and light displays. Grace Space also invited artists Caridad Sola, Igor Josifov, Sindy Butz and AnalogAnalogue to engage Fountain attendees with a variety of serene, spectacular, and confrontational works. Last year’s New York exhibition included a high-flying act by daring aerial artist Seanna Sharpe and her team, who suspended themselves from the ceiling of the 69th Regiment Armory in a breathtaking performance.

Fountain is notorious for its Friday and Saturday night events. Past musical guests include Chairlift, G Love, Marky Ramone, ADULT, No Age, VHS or Beta, Ninjasonik, Fab 5 Freddy, Tecla, TIKI DISCO, JPatt of The Knocks, Ricky Powell, NSR, Luka Son of Wolf, Eden Grey, and Lucas Walters.

Fountain invited local Miami writer J.J. Colagrande to be the fair’s first visiting writer for Art Basel Miami Beach 2012.  Read J.J.’s take on Fountain Art Fair and the Art Basel weekend on Fountain’s website.

“Tons of community-oriented art, at price points that were actually, actually thinkable for your average alternative culture journalist.” ~ The San Francisco Bay Guardian

“It’s the best place to find young talent.” ~ Cartwheel

“Fountain remains truly a haven for the selt-taught, self-represented, and DIY rogues of the art world — a sort of organized free for all, with one part street art and one part explorations in formalist craft.” ~ ARTINFO

FOUNTAIN ART FAIR SUPPORTS ARTS EDUCATION FOR NYC YOUTH

FOUNTAIN ART FAIR SUPPORTS ARTS EDUCATION FOR NYC YOUTH

New York, NYFountain Art Fair is pleased to announce its role as presenting sponsor for ProjectArt’s Walk the Talk, a call-to-action to build awareness about the deteriorating funding for arts education affecting youth, particularly in New York City public schools.  At 10am on September 29, participants will meet at Asya Geisberg Gallery and then walk the iconic High Line Park for a pilgrimage through Chelsea, New York’s arts district, in an effort to engage New Yorkers to make arts education a priority in children’s educations and lives.

“As always, we are interested in pushing boundaries and breaking new ground in the name of art.  We are proud to be a presenting sponsor for Walk the Talk, the city’s first ever walk for arts education.” - Rachel Esterday, Producer at Fountain Art Fair.

ProjectArt is an after-school, weekends and summer visual arts education program for children and youth. It is an invitation to the creative youth of New York to explore art in a bold and unique way. Their distinctive Project approach is based on actualizing student’s artistic visions, presenting their work in highly visible spaces where the works are on sale and channeling 100% of the proceeds directly to the students themselves.

"ProjectArt finds a natural partner in Fountain Art Fair, as we are both dedicated to nurturing emerging artists and believe in the power of art to spark positive change." - Adarsh Alphons, Director of ProjectArt

About Fountain Art Fair:

In addition to cutting-edge art, visitors to the fair can enjoy signature elements such as on-site performance art, a major street art installation, and musical performances that Fountain has become known for integrating into the art fair experience. From presenting just 3 local exhibitors at its first fair in 2006, Fountain has grown to represent over 60 international exhibitors at its most recent New York 2012 edition.

Bells & Whistles by Guy Goldstein

ROOSTER GALLERY, 190 ORCHARD STREET, NYC
OPENING RECEPTION: THURSDAY, MAY 31, 6 - 8PM
EXHIBITION DATES:  MAY 31 - JULY 8, 2012

Rooster Gallery Contemporary Art and Residency Unlimited (RU) invite you to the opening of JARO 1 featuring 2 solo shows by RU artists in residency Guy Goldstein and Erin Dunn. JARO 1 is the first in a cycle of jointly organised  exhibitions. Each year, Residency Unlimited and Rooster will offer the possibility to RU artists in residency to present new work at Rooster's premises in the Lower East side..   The term Jaro is a double reference to “year” in Esperanto and “caravan" in the Kichagga language. Time and displacement are integral to the concept of artists in residency.

On the ground level, Bells & Whistles by Guy Goldstein features a new sound piece  alongside works on paper. Goldstein's investigates how to create meaning in a saturated  consumer driven society. The process leading to the sound installation derives from a precise set of conditions. The artist enters printed material information in his computer that he collects from a wide range of sources in New York (e.g. restaurant menus, health leaflets, political flyers, fashion catalogs). He then reads this information out loud and records his voice on the computer. These spoken lists constitute the foundation of the multilayered sound piece that Goldstein will update continuously over the course of the exhibition.

The perception of the audience will be put to test by these surrounding sonic elements, which can be distorted and stretched, thus becoming either completely abstract at a given time, or clear and informative at another. The sound speakers are scattered on the gallery floor with the printed lists randomly displayed on top. The friction produced by the contact of the paper with the sound waves emanating from the speakers inevitably produce rustling effects. By incorporating an aleatory element into the rational world of ordering, the artist challenges the notion of narrative.

Working in tandem with the sonic installation, "Bells and Whistles" presents a series of drawings. Realized in graphite, they feature sonic elements and urban constructions that co-exist and collide thus providing the viewer with a similar sense of fast paced living.

In the lower level of the gallery, Rapture’s Adagio by Erin Dunn presents a complex installation of painting, sculpture and a stop motion animation that synthesizes techniques and materials employed with self-produced digital recordings. The starting point for Dunn is her readings about the life of Chiara de Montefalco (or ‘Saint Clare of the Cross’) who experienced ecstasies of ‘Jesus placing a cross in her heart.’ Upon her death, four nuns dissected her heart and were the first to discover the four chambered human heart - the cross is in quadrants.

Dunn is inspired to explore metaphysical and psychedelic divinity in relation to the body. Just like the Dervishes who get caught up in ecstatic raptures, the emotional intensity of the “sisters” in the animation is  triggered by whirling dances and hallucinatory music, immersing the viewer in an alternative landscape for imagination.

The complexity of Dunn’s creative process bears similarities to fluxus solutions. The paintings are realized with precise airbrush draftsmanship combined with loose and wild encaustic marbleization. The result is a set of ambiguous mandalas and unnamable entities with many sets of eyes, simultaneously angelic and demonic that swim through sky, sea and beyond.

Likewise, the sculptures share a sense of extreme strangeness with the unusual combination of materials, such as foam, wire, plastic and human hair.

Artsy Shark & Art in New York City

Artsy Shark & Art in New York City Websites
The work on Robin Antar has been proudly featured on the Artsy Shark and Art in New York City websites. Enjoy her fascinating story and her portfolio, and visit her website for more information.

My passion as a sculptor involves a technique I uncovered more than 20 years ago — the precise art of creating “virtual records” of contemporary culture — capturing common, everyday items in stone, from Milano cookies to Heinz ketchup. Essentially, I replicate these items on a real life-scale, complete with meticulous detail. I achieve this absolute realism by incorporating parts of the actual object, as well as custom-made stains, paints, plastics and gold leaf. It’s more than art imitating life, it’s art mirroring life.

In addition to my ‘Realism in Stone,’ I have many abstract works in my collection. My abstract work is a reflection of my experiences combined with emotion. Each abstract creation is one-of-a-kind, and has a unique significance, which emanates an essence and an aura of its own. The life-like creations from various types of stone are chiseled meticulously to form a visual extravaganza as well as an intellectual playground of wonderment. Each time the viewer looks at a piece , they see something different, allowing one to draw in its beauty through an individual perspective. The true beauty of abstract art is not just what appears to the naked eye, but what lies beneath the surface.

My work has been featured in exhibitions and museums across the U.S. as well as in private and corporate collections. They include: Sotheby’s, NY; the National Art Club, NY; Nabisco Gallery, NJ; Fine Art Management Enterprises, Miami, FL; the City Museum of St. Louis, Mo.; the Provincetown Art Museum, Provincetown, MA; the MGM Grand Hotel, Las Vegas, NV, and others.

Recent commissions include Dr. Marten Boots, England; Skechers Boots USA; California and Chateau Haut-Brion wines, France.

My work has garnered publicity coverage in print and broadcast nationwide, including the New York Post, New York Daily News, Las Vegas Tribune, Fashion Manuscript, Art Business News and Sportswear International, and NY Home, to name a few. Broadcast coverage includes Today in New York, Fox News in Las Vegas, NY, HGTV’s “That Clever”, and 1010 Wins radio in New York.

I have received many accolades and recognition for my work. I have been awarded the Allied Artists of America (Gold Medal of Honor and asked to become a full member), Match Up (first prize) in sculpture, work selected to be in Best of America artists and artisans, Best of New York Artists Books (second place) in sculpture, United Creators, (second place), Sculptural Pursuit (4th place in their national annual competition). My professional memberships include Pen and Brush, NYC; National Association of Women Artists and the National Sculpture Society.
