98th Annual Art Show at NYC's National Arts Club

98th Annual Art Show at NYC's National Arts Club Features
Award-Winning Brooklyn Artist, NOV 4-20, 2011

NYC, NY; Nov 2011 -- The 98th Annual Show at the National Arts Club in NYC will feature the work of Brooklyn sculptor Robin Antar, an award-winning artist who will be among many local artists included in an exhibition at 15 Gramercy Park South, Manhattan, from November 4- 20. An award reception will be on Sunday, November 20th at 1 PM.
Ms. Antar, whose sculptures have graced the display windows of Paul Stuart's flagship NYC Madison Avenue store, will exhibit her hat carved out of limestone. Ms. Antar was chosen to exhibit as an award winning member of Allied Artists of America, Inc.
Antar is known for her realistic sculptures of American culture-such as Oreos, Diesel jeans, and Dr Martens. Her sculptures are a challenging trompe l'oeil for the viewer, often leaving them wondering: is it a sculpture or is it the real thing? In contrast to the order of her home and the gallery-like quality of her living room where she rotates her favorite pieces, her studio houses 7 tons of stone (which spills over into her garage), and the unusual tools of her trade (including heavy drills that seem far too bulky for the slight Antar to lift, much less sculpt with). Last year she transformed several hundred pounds of red travertine marble into a larger-than-life-sized bottle of Heinz® Ketchup.
Ms. Antar's works have appeared in exhibitions at museums, galleries, corporate offices and universities, ranging from the City Museum in St. Louis, to the Nabisco Corporation Gallery, to New York University. Her works were recently on view at the Blue Hill Cultural Center in Pearl River, NY as part of the "Made In America" exhibition. Antar was named in the Best of America Sculpture Artists, 2007 and 2010 editions, and has been featured on HGTV's 'That's Clever.'
The mission of the National Arts Club is to stimulate, foster and promote public interest in the arts and educate the American people in the fine arts. The Club's Membership has included three presidents, and some of the most important artists and arts patrons in America. Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Dwight D. Eisenhower were all Members of the National Arts Club. Among the distinguished painters who have been Members are Robert Henri, Frederic Remington, William Merritt Chase and Cecilia Beaux. Sculptors have included Saint-Gaudens, Daniel Chester French, Anna Hyatt Huntington and Paul Manship. Many renowned literary figures have also been members. The National Arts Club is proud of its early recognition of new media artforms, like photography, film and digital media, and counts Alfred Stieglitz as one of its early Members. Musicians Victor Herbert and Walter Damrosch were Members, as were architects Stanford White and George B. Post. The Dramatic Arts are currently represented by Members Martin Scorcese, Ethan Hawke, Dennis Hopper, Robert Redford and Uma Thurman.
Allied Artists of America, Inc. is a non-profit National Art Society composed of artists, sculptors, elected active members and sustaining associate members from the across the country. The offices and exhibition galleries are both located at the elegant historical landmark, The National Arts Club. An award reception will be held on Sunday, November 20th at 1 PM. Brooklyn sculptor Robin Antar has been working for years on turning a gigantic marble slab into a replica of a bag of potato chips.
For 10 years, Brooklyn sculptor Robin Antar has risen each morning and headed to her garage, where she's turning a 6,000-pound marble slab into a giant replica of a bag of potato chips. To work on different sides of the sculpture, she has to rent a crane to move it.
Now that she's nearly finished, Ms. Antar has been calling chip company execs to see if they want to buy the piece. If someone does, she'll add the appropriate brand.
The 53-year-old artist has sculpted a host of consumer products. Her works, priced at $5,000 to $126,000, include a life-size Dr. Martens boot, a York Peppermint Pattie and an 800-pound “bag” of M&M's.
An art teacher and abstract sculptor since 1978, Ms. Antar started creating product replicas after Sept. 11.
“Everyone was doing things like Twin Towers and flags, and I said: 'What can I do to represent America? What is America?' “ Ms. Antar asked. “It's junk food.”
The artist, who raised three boys while frequently staying up all night to sculpt, says that by capturing everyday items in stone, she is creating a record of contemporary culture.
“Two thousand years from now, there's not going to be Reese's Peanut Butter Cups,” she said.
A version of this article appeared in the July 11, 2011 print issue of Crain's New York Business.

Artsy Shark & Art in New York City

Artsy Shark & Art in New York City Websites
The work on Robin Antar has been proudly featured on the Artsy Shark and Art in New York City websites. Enjoy her fascinating story and her portfolio, and visit her website for more information.

My passion as a sculptor involves a technique I uncovered more than 20 years ago — the precise art of creating “virtual records” of contemporary culture — capturing common, everyday items in stone, from Milano cookies to Heinz ketchup. Essentially, I replicate these items on a real life-scale, complete with meticulous detail. I achieve this absolute realism by incorporating parts of the actual object, as well as custom-made stains, paints, plastics and gold leaf. It’s more than art imitating life, it’s art mirroring life.

In addition to my ‘Realism in Stone,’ I have many abstract works in my collection. My abstract work is a reflection of my experiences combined with emotion. Each abstract creation is one-of-a-kind, and has a unique significance, which emanates an essence and an aura of its own. The life-like creations from various types of stone are chiseled meticulously to form a visual extravaganza as well as an intellectual playground of wonderment. Each time the viewer looks at a piece , they see something different, allowing one to draw in its beauty through an individual perspective. The true beauty of abstract art is not just what appears to the naked eye, but what lies beneath the surface.

My work has been featured in exhibitions and museums across the U.S. as well as in private and corporate collections. They include: Sotheby’s, NY; the National Art Club, NY; Nabisco Gallery, NJ; Fine Art Management Enterprises, Miami, FL; the City Museum of St. Louis, Mo.; the Provincetown Art Museum, Provincetown, MA; the MGM Grand Hotel, Las Vegas, NV, and others.

Recent commissions include Dr. Marten Boots, England; Skechers Boots USA; California and Chateau Haut-Brion wines, France.

My work has garnered publicity coverage in print and broadcast nationwide, including the New York Post, New York Daily News, Las Vegas Tribune, Fashion Manuscript, Art Business News and Sportswear International, and NY Home, to name a few. Broadcast coverage includes Today in New York, Fox News in Las Vegas, NY, HGTV’s “That Clever”, and 1010 Wins radio in New York.

I have received many accolades and recognition for my work. I have been awarded the Allied Artists of America (Gold Medal of Honor and asked to become a full member), Match Up (first prize) in sculpture, work selected to be in Best of America artists and artisans, Best of New York Artists Books (second place) in sculpture, United Creators, (second place), Sculptural Pursuit (4th place in their national annual competition). My professional memberships include Pen and Brush, NYC; National Association of Women Artists and the National Sculpture Society.
