The 9th annual Athena Film Festival kicks off Febuary 28th-March 3rd.

The 9th annual Athena Film Festival kicks off this week. With dozens of narrative features, documentaries, and shorts, panel conversations and Q&A's with filmmakers and talent/subjects from the films, FREE SCREENINGS, virtual reality, and more — this is a weekend you will not want to miss.

OSCAR WINNERS AT ATHENA 

Shorts Program III - Spotlight on STEM, will include Academy award-winning short film Period. End of Sentence.The film focuses on Indian women who fight the stigma surrounding menstruation and begin manufacturing sanitary pads.
Everyone's favorite Olivia Colman took home the Oscar for Best Actress in a Film for The Favourite. See the film, this Friday, March 1 at 9:30 PM at Athena.  
Tickets are also still available for Oscar nominees, Can You Ever Forgive Me? and Mary Queen of Scots, playing on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Get your tickets today!

ATHENA FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES LINEUP OF NARRATIVE, DOCUMENTARY AND SHORT FILMS
 FILMS INCLUDE BEYOND THE LIGHTS, DREAMCATCHER, DUKHTAR, OBVIOUS CHILD, QUE CARAMBRA ES LA VIDA & WE ARE THE BEST! AMONG OTHERS

 The festival runs from February 5 – 8

 New York, NY (January 9, 2015) – The Athena Film Festival announced today its 2015 lineup, featuring an array of narrative, documentary and short films.  The festival and its upcoming slate honor extraordinary women in the entertainment industry and spotlight films that showcase women’s leadership in real life and the fictional world.  Now in its fifth year, the festival runs from Thursday, February 5 through Sunday, February 8 on the Barnard College campus in Morningside Heights. Regina K. Scully, the Phoebe Snow Foundation, and the Artemis Rising Foundation are the festival’s Founding Sponsors.
 The festival opens on Thursday night with the New York Premiere of DREAMCATCHER, a documentary directed by Kim Longinotto.  2015 Athena awardee Gina Prince-Bythewood, director of BEYOND THE LIGHTS, will participate in a Q & A on Saturday night following a screening of the film starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
Among the feature films included in this year’s lineup are: OBVIOUS CHILD, starring Jenny Slate and directed by Gillian Robespierre, WE ARE THE BEST!, starring Mira Barkhammar, Mira Grosin and Liv LeMoyne and directed by Lukas Moodysson, and DUKHTAR, directed by Afia Nathaniel.  The documentary category includes: VESSEL, directed by Diana Whitten, SEPIDEH – REACHING FOR THE STARS, directed by Berit Madsen, QUE CARAMBA ES LA VIDA, directed by Doris Dörrie, and OUT IN THE NIGHT, directed by Blair Dorosh-Walther.  A wide variety of shorts will be featured including: THE LION’S MOUTH OPENS, directed by Academy Award®-nominee Lucy Walker, MUTED, directed by Rachel Goldberg, STOP TELLING WOMEN TO SMILE, directed by Dean Peterson, and AFRONAUTS, directed by Frances Bodomo.
“We are thrilled to celebrate the fifth year of this unique film festival with an inspiring and diverse range of films,” said Kathryn Kolbert, co-founder of the Festival and Constance Hess Williams Director of the Athena Center for Leadership Studies.  “Where better to celebrate the power and leadership of women in film than on the Barnard College campus in New York, which will be transformed this February with screenings, panels and our annual awards ceremony.”

As previously announced Academy Award®-winning actress and filmmaker Jodie Foster will receive this year’s Laura Ziskin Lifetime Achievement Award.  Additional awardees include Sheila Nevins, President of HBO Documentary Films, Gina Prince-Bythewood, director, writer and producer behind films such as Love & Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees and Beyond the Lights, and Cathy Schulman, Academy Award® winning producer, President of Mandalay Pictures, and President of Women in Film, known for films including Crash, The Illusionist, Darfur Now and Bernie.

Festival returns to Barnard College
February 5 – February 8, 2015

New York, NY (December 9, 2014) - Barnard College’s Athena Center for Leadership Studies and Women and Hollywood announced today that the fifth annual Athena Film Festival – a celebration of women and leadership – will return to Barnard’s campus in Morningside Heights from February 5 – 8, 2015.  Celebrating and honoring extraordinary women in the film industry, the festival highlights films that showcase women’s leadership in real life and the fictional world.  With a program including screenings, master classes, and Q&A panels with filmmakers and stars, the 2015 festival is set to inspire, entertain and recognize industry leaders.  Regina K. Scully, the Phoebe Snow Foundation and the Artemis Rising Foundation are the festival’s Founding Sponsors. Festival co-chairs include: Amma Asante; Julie Parker Benello; Debra Martin Chase; Dan Cogan; Diane Levin; Jon Levin; Regina K. Scully and Rachel Weisz.

The Athena Film Festival is proud to unveil this year’s recipients of the Athena Film Festival Awards, which honor actors, directors, producers and other members of the film industry for their leadership and creative accomplishments.  This year’s awardees include Sheila Nevins, President of HBO Documentary Films, Gina Prince-Bythewood, director, writer and producer behind films such as Love & Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees and Beyond the Lights, and Cathy Schulman, Academy Award-winning producer, President of Mandalay Pictures, and President of Women in Film, known for films including Crash, The Illusionist, Darfur Now and Bernie.

The Athena Film Festival is also pleased to announce the return of the Athena List, which has been called the “gender conscious cousin” of The Black List, and highlights 3-5 completed screenplays with strong leading female characters that have yet to be made into films.  The festival will also illuminate the story and process behind some of the featured films with Q&A panels including cast members and filmmakers.  Ticket holders will have the opportunity to learn from a range of industry leaders, both behind and in front of the camera, with a curated program of master classes.  Full information on these programs will be released January 2015.

Belle is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate mixed race daughter of Admiral Sir John Lindsay, an 18th Century British naval officer. THE FOURTH ANNUAL ATHENA FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES LINEUP OF NARRATIVE, DOCUMENTARY AND SHORT FILMS

The festival runs from February 6 - 9 
New York, NY (January 7, 2014) – The 2014 Athena Film Festival announces its lineup of narrative, documentary and short films.  The festival honors extraordinary women in the film industry and showcases films that address women’s leadership in real life and the fictional world.  Now in its fourth year, the festival runs from Thursday, February 6 through Sunday, February 9 on the Barnard College campus in Morningside Heights. Artemis Rising Foundation is the Founding Sponsor of the Festival.
 The New York Premiere of BELLE, starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and directed by Amma Asante, is the Athena Film Festival’s Opening Film, screening on Thursday evening.  DECODING ANNIE PARKER, starring Helen Hunt and Samantha Morton and directed by Steven Bernstein, is the festival’s Centerpiece Film, and will be screened on Friday evening.  GERALDINE FERRARO: PAVING THE WAY, directed by her daughter, Donna Zaccaro, is the festival’s Closing Film, screening on Sunday evening.

Now in its third year, the Athena Film Festival -- a celebration of women and leadership -- is an engaged in a  weekend of feature films, documentaries and shorts that highlight women’s leadership in real life and the fictional world.  The festival was  held Feb. 7 - 10, 2013 in the heart of New York -- at Barnard, the most sought-after women’s college in the nation.
