Something to read: the Conservation Center in Chicago

Spring has finally sprung here in Chicago, and after such a chilly winter, we couldn't be happier! Speaking of Spring, be sure to read about the springing areas of brass our Furniture Department repaired on Abraham Lincoln's Portable Bar. They also fabricated some missing elements of the piece, making it one of our most exciting treatments completed this month. Be sure to also check out our custom framing of a new portrait by Kerry James Marshall, and our treatment of early twentieth-century photographs.

For the first time ever, each of our articles features a new video! We hope you enjoy this little Spring treat.

The Conservation Center Chicago, looks like fun catch a glimpse!

September at The Center
As a fall begins in Chicago, our conservators have been busier than ever in the laboratories. This month, read about the collection of the Fisher Community Center in Marshalltown, Iowa, as we highlight a Degas pastel from their collection. Then, join us as we learn about the history of the Ketubah as our Paper Department dramatically transforms a family heirloom.  Next, we plunge into Rococo-style decorative arts as our Objects Department delicately handles a damaged porcelain urn.  Click each image to learn more, then scroll down to watch a tour of The Center narrated by Heather Becker, CEO.

Female Artists: Between the Secular and the Surreal

Gertrude Abercrombie: Bohemian Queen

Gertrude Abercrombie (1909 - 1977) was the only child of two opera singers who happened to be on tour in Texas the day she was born. While they continued to relocate throughout her early childhood, the family eventually settled in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago where Abercrombie lived for the remainder of her life. While Abercrombie had formal art training from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the American Academy of Art, her style was significantly influenced by her time spent outside of the classroom.

Lilias Trotter: Divine Aspirations

Five journals by Lilias Trotter were brought to The Center for conservation, digital archiving, and reproduction back in 2013. Some of the journals were sketchbooks, while others were written accounts of her experience in Algeria alongside pencil and watercolor sketches, as well as photographs of daily life.

Need Works conserved? Check out the Cinservation Center

MAY AT THE CENTER

Here at The Conservation Center, we are always excited to have the opportunity to work on pieces with fascinating provenance. Recently we have had the distinct pleasure of treating several such pieces. In this month's newsletter, we will share the story of visually memorializing Albert Einstein, and discuss the treatment of a treasured family violin.
We will also share the treatment story of a model Japanese temple-- a project that required the dedication of several different departments at The Center to ensure the piece's wellbeing for years to come.

Conserving Einstein Ephemera

Einstein's book and photograph required a creative design solution from our Framing & Display Department, with custom acrylic work to create the illusion of anti-gravity.

Our shipping team created custom packaging to keep the newly conserved temple safe during storage and transit. Thanks to their time and consideration, the work arrived in pieces but left as precious cargo.

In Chicago? Catch An Arctic Journey: Conserving a Pair of North Pole Books

JUNE AT THE CENTER
This month, we are excited to feature our treatment of a lithograph by Charles White, a renowned Chicago artist whose retrospective is currently on display at the Art Institute of Chicago. Next, we welcome you to marvel at the enormity of a historic teapot our Objects Department recently repaired for the Springfield Art Association. Lastly, we share the story behind a pair of books we repaired just in time for our client to bring them on his summer journey to the North Pole.
