David X. Levine - Amy Winehouse Exhibition

Steven Zevitas Gallery

David X Levine | Installation of Drawings, color pencil on paper, various dimensions

David X. Levine: Amy Winehouse

January 20 - February 25, 2012
Reception: Friday, February 3, 5:30 pm
450 Harrison Avenue #47 | Boston, MA 02118

Boston – Steven Zevitas Gallery is pleased to present Amy Winehouse, an exhibition of new work by Boston-area native and New York-based artist, David X. Levine. The exhibition will be on view from Friday, January 20 through Saturday, February 25, 2012, with an opening reception Friday, February 3.

Over the past two years, Levine has focused his energy on producing large-scale works on paper. Amy Winehouse presents four such pieces - including a twelve and a half foot wide triptych - as well as an installation of smaller works that provide a lexicon of Levine’s current pictorial vocabulary. Colored pencil continues to be Levine’s medium of choice, and in the interest of allowing viewers to have a more immediate relationship with the work’s inherent tactility and facture, the decision was made to leave the show unframed.

Music has always been a strong source of inspiration for Levine, and he intends for his work to function with the same unmediated directness. Upon hearing of her death in July of last year, Levine made the decision that his next exhibition would be titled Amy Winehouse. In her music, Levine finds a “raw openness and an ability to corral it into a finished experience” that mirrors his own goals.

Levine’s work has been the focus of a number of one-man exhibitions, including shows at Tony Wight Gallery in Chicago, Dust Gallery in Las Vegas, and Eight Modern in Santa Fe. Group exhibitions include shows at Spencer Brownstone Gallery in New York City and Cherry Martin in Los Angeles. This is Levine’s third solo exhibition at Steven Zevitas Gallery.

The artist will be present for an opening reception on Friday, February 3rd from 5:30 – 8:00 PM. You can also watch a time lapse video of Levine doing an installation of the 50 drawings he created for his show Amy Winehouse here.

For additional information, please contact Steven Zevitas at 617.778.5265 (ext. 22). Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11AM – 5 PM.

Jim D'Amato

The Art Dossier Market Presents: Jim D'Amato

"Entity 2", 2011. Hand pulled serigraph on 100 % rag paper. Signed, open edition. 16.75" x 11". (50 USD).
Click here to purchase and to see more works by the artist.

When we first met Jim D’Amato we were visiting an art fair in Miami, we had a brief and friendly introduction and both parties were on their way. When we met him again we were at another art fair, this time in New York, and after this we ran into him at just about every other art event we went to. He is a busy man and supports his fellow artists in anyway he knows how, whether it is showing up, word of mouth or most recently curating his own show that included work from 12 of his peers.  The man is everywhere not because he is a busy body but because he genuinely cares about his fellow artists, the state of the art world and supporting the artistic community as a whole. Above all this, he cares about educating his own eye and forging meaningful relationships with the world around him.

This commitment to his fellow artists translates ten fold in his commitment to his own work. Jim is an artist through and through, he is not a part time artist who dabbles in a bit of this and a bit of that, he lives and breathes art. He is constantly looking at what others are doing; constantly evaluating his own work and understanding how to make it grow and adapt, and looking at what has worked in his past work and what has not.

Part science fiction, part automatic drawing, this edition of silk-screen prints created exclusively for The Art Dossier exemplifies all of this. When we had our first studio visit with Jim, we fell in love with his intense, layered, thick, snaking, abstract paintings. These silk-screens are a smaller manifestation of those paintings and they are available exclusively through The Art Dossier Market at a price that makes them accessible to most.

Read below to learn more about Jim in Jim’s words as he discusses his process, his background and what went into creating this series of work. We hope you love them as much as we do.

1)    You created this work especially for The Art Dossier, tell us a bit about your concept for this series of work.

This series of serigraphs explore a primal, multidimensional space, which has haunted my work for several years. They’re comprised of intricate, visceral forms that have evolved over time.

2)    Can you talk about your process and methods used for creating this series.

It was important that the images could take on many permutations via their reproduction. I sought to create images that were graphically intense. In order to achieve this I made detailed black and white drawings, which eventually became images used in the silk screening process.

3)    What is unique about this series of prints?

Every print is hand pulled and printed on 100 % rag paper. These are also the first open editions I’ve ever made. Recently I’ve become intrigued by the possibilities of infinite reproduction.

4)    What are your traditional methods of working? How is this series similar and how is this dissimilar?

At times creating this series has typified my traditional process, and at other times it has forced me to work in opposition to it. All of my work is labor intensive, and comes from drawing. However preparing these images to be printed forced me to push myself, refine my process, and be patient.

India Art Fair 2012

India Art Fair 2012

India Art Fair Gallery Booths
Announcement of India Art Fair, 4TH Edition
25-29 January 2012in New Delhi

New Delhi, 15 October 2011: Now in its 4th edition, India Art Fair (formerly India Art Summit) is set to take place at the NSIC grounds in New Delhi from 25-29 January 2012. Established in 2008 as the country’s first international art fair, India Art Fair has received 178,000 visitors over its first 3 editions.

The forthcoming 4th edition will showcase 87 galleries from 19 countries including Argentina, Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Greece, Iran, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, the U.A.E, U.K. and U.S.A. While the fair presents a diverse breath of art from across India, over 40% of exhibitors are international galleries. Hauser and Wirth (UK/Switzerland), White Cube (UK), Gallerie Continua (Italy), Kalfayan Galleries (Greece) and Everard Read (South Africa) will be amongst the leading international galleries participating for the first time at the fair.

Attracting more than 100,000 people and a record number of new collectors (30-40%), the highly successful 3rd edition firmly established India Art Fair as the region’s leading platform for modern and contemporary art, and demonstrated the vast potential of the Indian art market. With one of the world’s fastest growing economies and HNWI (high net-worth individual) populations, and an expanding collector base, India is increasingly becoming an important centre for the global art market.  With an annual growth rate of almost 300% and an expanding global participation in its initial years, India Art Fair has repeatedly brought art into the focus of mainstream society in India, and contributing to the long term development of the Indian art scene.

The 4th edition will include the flagship Speakers’ Forum, Video Lounge, Art Projects, the Merchandise and Book Store, and a series of Collateral Events around the city of New Delhi. The art fair will be presented in an expanded new format, spread across 10,000 square metres at the NSIC grounds in central New Delhi.

India Art Fair’s partners for the 4th edition supporting partners include Officine Paneria, Sotheby’s and the Conde Nast Group. The fair’s academic partners include Asia Art Archive (Hong Kong) and Jawarharlal Nehru University (New Delhi).

Earlier this year, India Art Fair launched The Collectors’ Circle - a new initiative aimed at increasing awareness and access to art amongst young collectors. This will be a year-round membership based initiative that will provide information about art events including  talks, conferences, workshops and networking events with top individual and institutional collectors spread across India, and global art centres.

Neha Kirpal (Founding Director, India Art Fair) describes the upcoming edition of India Art Fair as “an important milestone for the art fair; which has witnessed exceptional growth and development in a short period of time. The 4th edition brings us closer to our goal of developing a truly world class fair, facilitating international exchange and trade, and contributing to the growth of a vibrant art scene in the Indian sub-continent”.

This year, Ms. Kirpal brings on two new strategic partners as co-owners of India Art Fair,  Will Ramsay and  Sandy Angus, who will bring in their global expertise in exhibitions and events.  Mr. Ramsay is Founder of Ramsay Fairs, PULSE Art Fairs, and Affordable Art Fairs; he runs art fairs in 8 countries on 4 continents.  Mr. Angus is Chairman of Montgomery Worldwide.  Mr. Ramsay and Mr. Angus are also co-founders of Art HK, the Hong Kong International Art Fair.

Cutlog 2011

cutlog 2011

Cutlog

cutlog’s next edition will take place at the Paris Bourse de Commerce, October 20-23, 2011
The first selection is almost finished. A few booths are still available!
Please subscribe to: info@cutlog.org
cutlog, a Parisian, cutting-edge contemporary art fair dedicated to promoting international galleries which are supporting emerging artists, will hold its third edition from the 20th to the 23rd of October 2011. The galleries of cutlog 2011 will present artworks from their emerging artists, as well as the latest works from their established positions. cutlog is both an alternative and a complement to the other art fairs, focused on presenting under-the-radar galleries, it offers a platform to up and coming artists, as well a bridge between galleries and established collectors. Held under the dome of the Bourse de Commerce, France’s historical equivalent of Wall Street. It is a skip and a jump away from the Grand Palais, the Louvre and the Centre Pompidou. There, in the circular, 1000 meter square room, it disrupts th e typical, stern patterns of fairs and encourages a dialogue from galleries to visitors.

A selection of 35 international and French galleries, will offer a new visibility and a move away from Parisian art fairs. Since its kick-off three years ago, Cutlog has steadily gathered the upper crust of worldwide press, collectors, museum directors, curators and art lovers. The fair opens to the Guest of Honour and for the press on Wednesday 19th, followed by 4 days of open views alongside thematic conferences and artists films.

Last year, cutlog welcomed 15 000 visitors from all other the world.

This « salon » confirmed his status as the most international French satellite art fair: more than ten countries will participate to cutlog 2011, galleries will come from Asia, USA and Europe.Described as “la crème de la fair” by Dazed and Confused and ”the most European art fair” by Beaux Arts magazine, it has steadily gathered the upper crust of worldwide press and buyers – and no less is expected for this year.

The Swiss bank Pictet & Cie has confirmed its support and commitment to contemporary art by being cutlog’s main sponsor. A pre-opening and a private dinner will be organized for the European Clients.
As one of culog’s main partners Mercedes Benz will provide a limousine service for collectors during the fair. For the second successive year, Bavaria will be supporting contemporary art by being one of cutlog’s main sponsors.

PROGRAMME:

A jury composed of personalities from the art world will award the winner a 5000 euro grant. Accompanying the winner’s ceremony will be leading art critics, collectors, museum directors and personalities from ARTE.

212GALLERY

Ai Kijima, Judgement, 2011 (27 x 31 inches, textile)

Ai Kijima: Non Stop Everywhere
1 August 2011 – 15 September 2011

212GALLERY is pleased to present the fabric collages of Ai Kijima.

Ai Kijima crafts patchwork extravaganzas out of American pop culture.  Following a generation of artists like Arturo Herrera, who began his career by using Disney character imagery as the raw material for a kind of subversive formalism, Ai Kijima combines the traditional hand-working technique of quilting with postmodern appropriation.

The nine candy-colored cartoonscapes on display at 212Gallery will range in scale from 20 inches to over eight feet and will absorb the viewer into their layered narratives of fantasy and subliminal associations that muse on consumerism, sexuality, superficiality and moral decay.

Scouring flea markets, garage sales and thrift stores from Asia, Europe and North America, Kijima uses disparate materials of varying iconography -  a Pink Floyd T-Shirt, a Kimono, childrens’ “Disney” bedding. Stitched together, Kijimas wall hangings juggle American pop culture icons with traditional Japanese symbols such as the chrysanthemum and koi.

Kijima’s process is painstaking. What begins as an intuitive layering of images is then ironed to a fusible web to which she adds backing; then the sewing machine.  The images bounce off one another suggesting connecting narratives. Kijima uses color-matched shiny polyester thread to sew minute stitches on the fabrics. When seen from afar, the large works, composed of hundreds of fabric pieces, appear as two-dimensional paintings. The intense, seemingly cacophonous imagery morphs into highly choreographed quilted collages. The end result is an astonishing array of beauty and intensity.

Tokyo born, Brooklyn-based artist Ai Kijima received her M.F.A. in Fiber and Material Studies at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL. She has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions around the world and has permanent collections at the Mint Museum of Craft and Design, Charlotte, NC and the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, Chicago, IL. She was recently awarded a residency at Miami, Florida’s Fountainhead Residency program.

SECOND ANNUAL FALL AFFORDABLE ART FAIR RETURNS TO NEW YORK CITY
September 22-25, 2011 at 7W New York(7 West 34th Street)

(New York, NY) The Affordable Art Fair New York City. Shaking up the dusty model of art as an elite pass time, the Affordable Art Fair Fall 2011 will showcase new artists, galleries, programming, and installations!  With the immense success of last year’s inaugural fall installment, and the record breaking attendance and sales of the Spring fair, the Affordable Art Fair NYC Fall edition,  September 22-25, 2011 at 7W New York (7 West 34th Street), is sure to be a must attend event.

The Affordable Art Fair celebrates the idea that art is for everyone.  Whether you are an experienced collector or an art novice, this fair is about the joy and excitement that art should bring to your life.  By presenting contemporary art priced from $100 - $10,000, with three-quarters of the work under $5,000, no one looking to own art should leave the fair empty handed.  At this edition, the fair will present nearly 65 international and national galleries exhibiting original paintings, sculptures, photographs, and prints.

“We cannot wait for our fall fair to open as it is looking to be even better than our spring edition, which was amazing” says Judith Pineiro, Director of Affordable Art Fair NYC and LA. “With a terrific group of galleries at the fair, we have a great balance of new exhibitors and returning ones.  What our visitors will find thrilling is that we are presenting an entirely new roster of artists from our spring edition.”

The uniqueness of the Affordable Art Fair carries over to the programming the fair offers for its diverse audience.  Whether it is a family outing or a night on the town, you will want to take full advantage of everything offered:

  • Interact in our Kids’ Studio with balloon artist Larry Moss leading classes!  Hosted by LittleCollector.com, this will get your kids excited about art!
  • A ‘hot topic’ talk with artist Micah Ganske, whom will discuss the intersections of art and technology, also hosted by Artstar.com.
  • Open studios with the Ladd Brothers, hosted by The Invisible Dog, fair goers will get to watch these artists at work!

Affordable Art Fair Past and Present
Twelve years ago, Will Ramsay changed the model of the traditional art fair by creating the Affordable Art Fair, where contemporary art is accessible to all. Now in nine locations around the world, Affordable Art Fair proves that you do not need to be an art expert or a billionaire to have original works of art by living artists in your home or office.  With the fair taking place annually in  Amsterdam, Bristol, Brussels, London (spring and fall), Melbourne, Milan, New York (spring and fall), North London, Singapore, and Sydney, over $270 million worth of art has been sold at the fairs. The success of the brand continues with the estimated millionth visitor to the Affordable Art Fair expected in 2011.
