Art Fair 14C and Mana Contemporary are pleased to have partnered together for “I Would Prefer Not To...” a group show at the ART150 Gallery.

The phrase “I would prefer not to” may be one of the most indelible spoken lines in American literature. The declaration derives its power from giving the slightest impression of hope that Herman Melville’s Bartleby may still fall in line with his fellow employees and do as he is told—thereby softening the true defiance of the statement.

“The simple addition of “would” and “prefer” creates a complex scenario where the appropriate answer is not readily available,” explains McComsey. “How does one reply to someone ‘who would prefer not to’ participate in society,

This exhibition seeks to show the importance that artists have in these times by connecting their work to the same spirit of Bartleby’s repeated line of passive resistance.

Participating Artists:

Kristian Battell, Kirkland Bray, Mary Jean Canziani, Sandra Cavanagh, Nora Chavooshian, Gabriella D’Italia, Nicholas D’Ornellas, Jesse Egner, Pauline Galiana, Ann Giordano, Kendall Henderson, Marshall LaCount, Carolyn Lambert, M. P. Landis, Osy Milian, Deborah Pohl, Margaret Roleke, Regina Ruff, Sajal Sarker, Fabricio Suarez, Hui Tian, Abhishek Tuiwala, and Renelle White Buffalo.

“Nothing so aggravates an earnest person as a passive resistance,” Herman Melville, Bartleby the Scrivener (1853).
Events are free and open to the public.

Mana Contemporary Exhibits Nyugen Smith's at the Art Fair C14, November 10-13, 2022

Bundlehouse FS Mini No. 9 Sunset | Courtesy of the Artist

Mana Contemporary, in association with Sean Horton (Presents), is pleased to feature sculpted and wall mounted works by Jersey City artist, Nyugen E. Smith at New Jersey’s largest visual arts event, Art Fair 14C. The Fair will run from November 10-13, 2022, at the historic Armory located at 678 Montgomery Street, Jersey City, New Jersey.

Nyugen E. Smith is a first-generation Caribbean-American interdisciplinary artist based in Jersey City, NJ where he maintains a studio at Mana Contemporary. Through found object sculpture, mixed media drawing, performance, photography, sound, video, and writing, Nyugen deepens his knowledge of historical and present-day conditions of Black African descendants in the diaspora.

Nyugen launched his prolific series Bundlehouse in 2005 consisting of mixed media, assemblage and sculptural works and is centered around forced migration.  The New York Times’s art review by Siddhartha Mitter and Will Heinrich, on September 8, 2022, lists Sean Horton (Presents) (Platform #7) one-person show, Nyugen E. Smith, as one of the favorite booths at this year's Armory Show. Smith will be showcasing (Bundlehouse: Here and Now) at Art Fair 14C in Booth C26.
