Hi Catch the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery Opening Sat Oct. 20, 3:30-5:30

Opening in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery
This Weekend!

Exhibition Dates:  October 12 - 27
Reception:  October 20, 3:30pm- 5:30pm
An additional live component at the reception will be a 10-minute
visual/dance performance created by Cynthia Roberts and dance professor
and choreographer Nikki Sao Pedro-Welch. This work is a site-specific
excerpt from their full-scale production Armations Anthropocene, which explores global change and the anthropogenic epoch, and is adapted specifically for the Jeanie Tengelson Gallery.

The Art League of Long Island is pleased to offer this special exhibit of the creative work by long-standing Art League of Long Island member FRAN ROBERTS and artist daughter CYNTHIA ROBERTS.

This show is a unique opportunity to explore a lifelong conversation of
creativity between father and daughter. As over 70 percent of the earth is covered with ocean water, the title Oceans Connect Us refers to both
Roberts’ love of the sea, and the varied life paths that connect them at
different markers.

Discussion and Book Signing with Noted Art Consultant and Gallery Owner Paul Dorrell

Discussion and Book Signing with Noted Art Consultant and Gallery Owner Paul Dorrell
The Art League of Long Island is hosting a discussion and book signing of Paul Dorrell’s book Living the Artist’s Life:

Updated & Revised in the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery on Friday, November 16 at 7:00pm.  The event is open to the public and there is no fee to attend.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR and Book: Dorrell opened Leopold Gallery in 1991, and has been advancing artists’ careers on a national level ever since.  With clients such as Warner Brothers, the Mayo Clinic and H&R Block, Dorrell knows how to land the big deals, yet also how to win the trust of private collectors. He presents the information so that any artist can learn how to more easily structure a career that works. With sage advice and humorous anecdotes, Dorrell keeps you engaged through each chapter. Whether instructing on how to get your work into a gallery, or how to handle self-doubt, he knows his ground. He also tells the story of his gallery's initial failures and eventual successes. Regardless of your place in the arts, you will benefit from this work.

Praise for Living the Artist's Life: Update & Revised:
·      “The success of the Book hasn’t dimmed Dorrell’s drive to help undiscovered artists get the recognition he feels they deserve.  It’s also heavy on pragmatic advice from pricing and promoting one’s work to gaining acceptance by galleries.”  The Associated Press

·      “Dorrell’s book offers a frank and inspiring look at all aspects of the Artist’s Life, from the creative and emotional challenges to the nuts-and-bolts of the art business.”  Hartford Courant

·      “An entertaining and highly valuable guide for aspiring and working artists.” Murray Dessner, Painting Instructor and Critic, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia.

EVENT FORMAT:  Paul will discuss his Book, Living the Artist’s Life: Updated & Revised, and conduct an abbreviated version of his career workshop, accompanied by a handout with a Q&A session.  A book signing follows the presentation.  To learn more about Paul and his work, go to www.LEOPOLDgallery.com

The Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery is located at 107 East Deer Park Road in Dix Hills.  The gallery is open to the public Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM and weekends from 11 AM to 4 PM.  For more information call (631) 462-5400 or visit www.artleagueli.org.

Call to Artists - Portraiture - An Exhibition of Portraits and Figures

Burton Silverman to Judge Art League’s Upcoming Portrait Show

This spring the Art League will hold its second juried portrait exhibition. "A Common Theme: Portraiture" will open May 20 and run to June 17, 2012. Taking its title from the popular "A Common Thread" of 2009, this competition will be open to figurative works in all mediums, including photography. We are happy to announce that Burton Silverman, the renowned portrait artist, will be our judge. The deadline for entries is April 2.
Burton Silverman is one of America's foremost portrait painters. Whether working in oil, watercolor or pastel, he has concentrated on, as he puts it, "the landscape of the human face". He has completed countless commissions of notable patrons and has had thirty-one solo shows in major cities across the country. His work has appeared in national and international exhibitions, including the National Portrait Gallery, the National Academy Museum, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Mexico City Museum of Art and the Royal Academy of Art in London, garnering numerous prizes along the way, among them the Ranger Purchase Award at the National Academy, twice-in 1965 and 1983.
His paintings are represented in nearly two dozen public collections, including the Brooklyn Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Mint Museum, the Delaware Museum, the New Britain Museum of American Art and the Smithsonian's National Museum of American Art and National Portrait Gallery, as well as private collections in both the U.S. and Europe.
The Art League is privileged to have Burton Silverman judge this show.

“THE MANY FACES OF RICHARD GACHOT”
OPENS AT THE ART LEAGUE OF LONG ISLAND’S JEANIE TENGELSEN GALLERY ON AUGUST 28TH

Many Faces, 1996, by Richard Gachot. Found object sculpture: oil filter, flour sifters,
plumbing parts, kitchen gadgets, bike and wood wheels, and electric heater parts.

“The Many Faces of Richard Gachot”, a major survey of the a major survey of the artist’s found object sculpture will be shown at the Art League of Long Island from August 28th through October 2nd. This exhibition brings together an extraordinary collection of major works that feature his signature style. An opening reception on Sunday, September 18th from 3:00 to 5:00 pm includes a talk by Franklin Hill Perrell of the Roslyn Landmark Society on Gachot's art.
Gachot’s works typically depict people, animals, insects, flowers, and narrative compositions arising out of groupings of such figures, all made out of found objects, altered, modified, or re-combined in unexpected ways to create the artist’s unique characters and personalities. Some pieces are kinetic, the artist having engineered them to function like machines.  As both a tinkerer and a poet of unexpected juxtapositions, Gachot functions in a space between Calder and Cornell. As critic Helen Harrison once observed in a New York Times review, “Part of the fun is to recognize what the materials were before Gachot worked his magic.”

Gachot sees the potential for ordinary objects, when skillfully recombined, to signify both visual and poetic associations. He uses a wide array of items, ranging from antiques of recognizable value, vintage photos or newspaper clippings, tools, machine parts, and pieces of gadgets of all description. The capacity for “Yankee ingenuity” and mechanical invention fuses with whimsy and wit, producing works that are ironic, at times searing, indictments of common foibles, and abuses of the environment, real estate development, and recurring patterns of behavior or belief. Messages can be equally uplifting, with references to flower or nature, dance or the arts, and expressions of sentiment or affection. Through humble materials, Gachot has created a universal art that produces an original aesthetic and packs a powerful message about the varieties and context of human experience.

Gachot lives in a restored 1760 Quaker farmhouse in Old Westbury, L.I.  He studied at Yale with Josef Albers and has been shown in more than 100 exhibitions. He was represented for many years by the Frank J. Miele Gallery in New York and has shown at the Outsider Art Fair. His prior exhibitions on Long Island include the Country Art Gallery and Lynda Anderson Gallery (both in Locust Valley), and the Art Gallery of SPLIA (Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities) in Cold Spring Harbor.

There will also be a related display of Gachot’s works at the Bryant Library in Roslyn, concurrent with his exhibition at the Art League.

The Art League of Long Island’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery is located at 107 East Deer Park Road in Dix Hills.  The gallery is open to the public Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM and weekends from 11 AM to 4 PM. There is no admission charge.  For more information call (631) 462-5400 or visit www.artleagueli.org.
