Jaimie Warren, "The Whoas of Female Tragedy II" opens January 10th

Self-Portrait as Kali Conner, digital C-print, 2012

JAIMIE WARREN

The Whoas of Female Tragedy II

January 10 - February 9, 2013

OPENING January 10, 6-9PM

The Hole is proud to announce a new solo exhibition by Kansas City-based artist Jaimie Warren. In photographs that explore different female stereotypes from both art history and celebrity culture, distorted through the internet’s bizarre juxtapositions, disposable imagery and memes, this new body of work features the artist and her friends in roles as diverse as Zsa Zsa Gabor, Easy E, The Virgin Mary, Lana Del Rey or Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon.

Like a digital age, Midwestern Cindy Sherman, Warren camouflages herself in handmade costumes, sets and extensive makeup to impersonate internet-distorted celebrities, including a section of “food-lebrities” which you can perhaps imagine (“Lasagna Del Rey”). Unlike self-portrait artist Nikki Lee who aims to “pass” in various subcultures, Warren with her Rubenesque body, big blonde hair and rosy cheeks never quite fits in anywhere, perhaps best as her idol Roseanne Barr. The juxtaposition of her non-celebrity appearance with the sculpted and contrived publicity shots of Lil' Kim or Madonna bring the unreachably idealized form back to its much funner corporeal reality.

The everyday disruptions of reality or offences to taste, perhaps, put her in some relationship to Wegee or Martin Parr, while her work overall defies specific reference to the history of photography, as perhaps she has more in common with the history of camp and the films of John Waters. The works feel as they came out of a young lady in the Midwest with a vivid imagination who had to make her own fun with her friends, and she has indeed collaborated with long time friends and fellow Kansas City artists Cody Critcheloe (SSION) and fashion designer Peggy Noland. Warren writes: “The self-portraits have always been a way of entertaining myself, as I live in a smaller city, and I have been taking them long before any one noticed let alone requested more. This is also why I co-created Whoop Dee Doo [a faux public access television show for children] as we are always creating our own projects and entertainment, essentially out of necessity”

In this exhibition there are three different series of new works: one where Warren is re-creating found Photoshopped paintings from art history; the second body of work takes on found Photoshopped images that mix celebrities with food; while the last is from totallylookslike.com where people pair images of celebrities with objects, animals, food, other celebrities, etc. to show how they humorously look alike.  Warren puts in an enormous amount of handmade energy to recreate these Photoshop Frankensteins without the use of Photoshop, and all works in the show are unadulterated photographic prints.  Part of the insanity is to figure out why.

Warren is interested in the anonymous nature of “bored at work” Photoshoppers especially in the art history series where venerated works of art history are ridiculously and abjectly altered in the most curious ways. Many sites feature famous paintings that are “pimped out” by adding Versace clothes and glittery phones or even racy lingerie to paintings of nudes. The ersatz humour of the internet and the slightly creepy concoctions of the public when bored with the barrage of celebrity images all fit well into her vaudevillian, Roseanne Barr-ean sense of humour that pervades all her art and performances.

Jaimie Warren (b. 1980 Kansas City) is a photographer, performance artist and curator known for her theatrical, humorous self-portraits set in various scenarios and locations, whether constructed or real.   Her first solo exhibition was at Higher Pictures in NYC in 2009 and was reviewed in Artforum and many other well-known publications.  Warren’s first monograph was published by Aperture in 2008. Her work was debuted on tinyvices.com by curator Tim Barber who has also included her work in many group shows. She has participated in group exhibitions at Max Wigram in London, The MACRO Museum in Rome, Colette in Paris, Deitch Projects, NYC and many more. She and Matt Roche are co-directors of Whoop Dee Doo, a faux public access television show for kids.

This exhibition is variation of The WHOAS of Female Tragedy presented at the Miami Dade College Museum of Art and Design this past fall. Warren collaborated with artist Lee Heinemann who created custom costumes and props.

The Hole is open Tuesday through Saturday, 12 – 7PM

Kim McCarty
Red Boy (2012) Watercolor On Paper, 74h x 45w in
We are pleased to announce the extension of Kim McCarty's exhibition Boys & Girls through this Saturday, January 12th. Don't miss your last chance to see this powerful exhibition!
Using a wet on wet technique, Kim McCarty's watercolors of larger than life beings express both flaws and perfection, realism and abstraction. They are capable of communicating a feeling or a mood that is universal, yet deeply intimate and personal. Some figures express longing, others seem sexy and intriguing, some innocent and unaware of our voyeurism. In these boys and girls we see our emotional selves reflected, and catch a glimpse of the fragility and tenuousness of the human experience.

They Always Fly Away (2012) Acrylic On Panel, 12h x 9w in
$1,500
Paul Wackers' work favors the often overlooked nuances in life, consisting of surreal paintings of abstract objects and geometric landscapes. These non-specific places feel oddly nostalgic, like a fleeting memory of familiar forms, feelings and situations. Pulling inspiration from moments in film, articles read, or a walk down the street, these whimsical paintings move in and out of reality, focusing on the delicate interactions between objects in these newly fabricated worlds.

Earth and Water: An Exhibition of Ceramic Arts and Watermedia

Earth and Water: An Exhibition of Ceramic Arts and Watermedia
January 27 through March 3, 2013
Reception:  Sunday, January 27, 3-5pm

l to r:  “Dirty Laundry Series 1 of 3: Pope’s Laundry”, clay with wood, gold leaf, and collage by Barbara Karyo;
“As Far as the Eye Can See”, acrylic by Susan Bird

In this visually exciting exhibition the Art League of Long Island is presenting the work of eight contemporary Long Island artists who create in either clay or water-mediums.  This exhibit presents an opportunity to compare the individual approaches to subject matter and material, and discover new connections and contrasts.

The ceramic artists include John (Jack) Fink who's whimsical work will include an operating fountain, stimulating both sight and sound; Tina Folks will exhibit her "Katchina" figures and "Tablets", a wall installation which makes reference to the spiritual past; Barbara Karyo, who's bas-relief forms and sculptures convey gesture and movement; and William Shillalies, who will be exhibiting his ash glazes on conceptual pieces, inspired by the natural world and exploring the distinction between movement and fragmentation.

The watermedia artists are Susan Bird, who in her interpretations of nature uses acrylic paint in drips and washes; Riccarda de Eccher, a watercolorist who paints dramatic vistas of the Italian Alps in a soft limited pallet; Katherine Hiscox who will exhibit her plein air works that capture the rhythms in nature; and Deborah Katz who's abstract watercolors express the essence of a moment in nature.

A brief bio of each artist follows:

Susan Bird studied with Steve Lamposana at the Nassau County Museum of Art and currently studies with Stan Brodsky at the Art League of Long Island. A teacher for many years, she now paints full-time at her studio in Huntington.

Riccarda de Eccher grew up in northern Italy at the foot of the Dolomites.  An avid mountain climber, Ms. de Eccher began painting later in life, working in watercolor with the mountains as her primary subject.  Her work has been published in several books in collaboration with Italian authors and has been shown widely in Italy and, in this country, at the Heckscher Museum.

John (Jack) Fink graduated with a BFA from Millikin University in Illinois and did post-graduate work at Ohio University, Illinois State University, and Pratt Institute.  He was awarded an MA from NYU.  Mr. Fink was one of the founding members of the Art Department at Nassau Community College, where he continues to teach ceramics.  An award-winning artist, Mr. Fink's ceramic sculptures reflect his effort to draw on the mystery of the creative process.

Tina Folks holds a BA in Studio Art from Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY and a BFA in Ceramic Design from Parsons School of Design in NYC.  She has served on the Board of Directors for the East End Arts & Humanities Council in Riverhead for 3 years and was recently named Board secretary.

Katherine Hiscox received her MA in Creative Art Therapy from Hofstra University and a BA and MS in art education from Queens College.  She is currently teaching watercolor workshops. Her work, which has won numerous awards, graces many private collections.

Barbara Grossman Karyo began her art education studying fashion design at Pratt Institute.  Her initial exposure to pattern-making has had a significant influence on the development of three-dimensional forms which she applies to her clay works.  Ms. Karyo was awarded an MFA in painting and ceramics from Pratt Institute and is currently Professor of Art, (Drawing and Ceramics) at SUNY's Suffolk Community College, where she served as Director of the Flecker Memorial Gallery from 1980-2002.

Deborah Katz was educated at SUNY Stony Brook and later studied under Eleanore Dragonette, Carl Molno, Betty Holliday, Stan Brodsky and Craig Taylor. Ms. Katz is the Curator and Director of the Alfred Van Loen Gallery at the South Huntington Library.

Bill Shillalies received an MFA from Hunter College, NYC.  Working in clay for over 35 years, he studied ceramics with Susan Peterson, Robert Morris, Peter Voulkos and Peter Callas.

The Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery is located at 107 East Deer Park Road in Dix Hills.  Gallery hours are from 9am – 4pm Monday through Friday, and 11am – 4pm weekends.  Admission to the gallery and the reception is free and open to the public.  For more information about the exhibit visit www.artleagueli.org or call (631) 462-5400.

FACTOR 41N-9W: Riad Miah & Luis Nobre

Riad Miah was born in Trinidad and Tobago, and lives and works in New York, NY. Luis Nobre was born, lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal. Both artists have been colleagues since 2001.

In this show, the Portuguese artist Luis Nobre and the American artist Riad Miah explore ideas of nature, materiality, color and memory. Each is interested in process, in painting and drawing as acts of commemoration and creation; each is also interested in the overlapping of individuals and groups, of one-offs and series. For both, process is often paramount: Nobre gathers inspiration for weeks, until the point at which inspiration gleaned from multiple sources  demands concretization. In a similar vein, Miah draws from both nature and culture- from biology, astronomy, art history- to create work that simultaneoulsly embraces the microscopic and the macrocosmic. Nobre and Miah here present new work in which form and content teach one another, often in surprising and innovative ways. Above all, the imperative to please aesthetically comes to the fore, with play and chance collaborating.

The exhibition presents the two artists’ works on both floors of the gallery. On the main floor of the gallery Nobre will present works that incorporates a distorted geometric pattern that is an Arabic decoration seen in the streets of Lisbon. The motif breaks the flat organized structure by creating an illusion of a form that is simultaneously flat and 3-dimensional.

Miah’s work consists of an installation of 20 hexagonal canvases. The color sequence of the 20 canvases is based on the Fibonacci system. The color of each canvas is based on the numbers in Fibonacci’s sequence, using violet=1, red=1, orange=2, yellow=3, green=5, blue=8. Violet starts the system even though it is often the last color within the R,O,Y,G,B,V color wheel.  Through this mathematical process, organic-seeming images are created.  Aquatic, astronomical, biological, and pop culture imagery is suggested.

The works downstairs are by both artists, both working in an intuitive process, wherein each piece is free to develop in dialog with other pieces, without a superimposed system and without preconception.

Riad Miah holds a B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts and an M.F.A from the Ohio State University. He is an alumnus of Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Vermont Studio Center. He is a recipient of a NYFA Fellowship in the category of Painting and previously a professor at Parsons The New School for Design. Miah’s work has been exhibited and collected nationally and internationally.

Luis Nobre is currently attending the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon where he will earn his PHD. He has participated in the International Residence Program at Location 1 in New York City, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Ilidio Pinho Foundation. His work has been exhibited on a national and international level.

Wade Guyton OS
"The Whitney Museum has a hit on its hands: a beautiful show organized by a young curator that makes a cogent case for the work of a young artist."—The New York Times
Through January 13, 2013
Wade Guyton
Over the past decade, New York–based artist Wade Guyton has pioneered a groundbreaking body of work that explores our changing relationships to images and artworks through the use of common digital technologies, such as the desktop computer, scanner, and inkjet printer. Guyton’s purposeful misuse of these tools to make paintings and drawings results in beautiful accidents that relate to the ways in which we haltingly navigate the visual and technological barrage of our time.
Richard Artschwager!
"The last great minimalist"—New York Magazine
Through February 3, 2013

Richard Artschwager
Richard Artschwager had his first solo exhibition at the age of forty-two, in 1965 at Leo Castelli Gallery. Since then his art has been shown throughout the world, and his enigmatic and diverse work has been influential, yet not thoroughly understood. This exhibition is a comprehensive review of Artschwager’s remarkable creative exploration of the mediums of sculpture, painting, and drawing, and is the first retrospective exhibition of Artschwager’s work since the one organized by the Whitney in 1988.

Images, like words, can trigger a cultural or emotional response to a shared national ethos. Artists have employed images—sometimes straightforwardly, often obliquely—in order to comment on a country, its people, its political or social goals, and its self-image. This exhibition explores this phenomenon through a rotating installation, drawn from the Whitney’s collection, of works on paper by a diverse group of artists including Robert Bechtle, Enrique Chagoya, Howard Cook, William N. Copley, Edward Hopper, Willard Midgette, Joseph Pennell, Benton Spruance, and Stow Wengenroth.
