A Selection of highlights from across the sale

LONDON – 29 June 2023 – Phillips is proud to unveil its latest offering, an online auction dedicated to SPOTLIGHT: A Private London Collection. Following the success of SPOTLIGHT in the recent May Photographs live auction in London, Phillips are delighted to present an online auction featuring further SPOTLIGHT highlights. From portraits of fashion and pop celebrities such as Terry O’Neill’s 1970 rendition of Brigitte Bardot, to Martin Parr’s 2014 iconic image of Queen Elizabeth II, the works featured in this sale explore the major generation-defining moments of the last century. This remarkable curation of iconic photographs will go on view from 7 to 13 July in Phillips’ London galleries on Berkeley Square and will be presented in a dedicated online auction from 7 to 14 July on Phillips.com.

Yuka Yamaji, Head of Photographs, Europe, and Rachel Peart, Head of Department, London, said: “We are thrilled to present our online auction dedicated to SPOTLIGHT: A Private London Collection, the next iteration of this expansive and remarkable collection. The first iteration of this collection was offered in our live auction in May and received enthusiastic international bidding with five works from the collection featuring in the top ten results. We look forward to presenting this latest SPOTLIGHT offering of timeless and instantly-recognisable photographs in July.”

Yuka Yamaji, Head of Photographs, Europe, and Rachel Peart, Head of Department, London, said, “We are thrilled with the sale total of £2.3 million achieved today. The 17th edition of ULTIMATE was 100% sold, with Maria Svarbova’s Grössling City Bath realising a world auction record at £38,100. Eight out of the eleven artists featured in ULTIMATE achieved world auction records, seven of those artists are women, and four are Korean. The compelling response from our global collecting community for contemporary Korean photographs in our sale today demonstrates the growing demand for works by trailblazing image-makers from that region. We were particularly pleased with the result achieved for Rala Choi’s auction debut with A woman lying on the sofa which soared to £27,940, over double the estimate. We saw enthusiastic international bidding for SPOTLIGHT: A Private London Collection, with five works from the collection featuring in the top ten, including the top lot of the sale.”

Rebecca Tooby-Desmond at the Rostrum during Phillips’ April Editions Auction

Kelly Troester and Cary Leibowitz, Deputy Chairmen and Co-Heads of Editions and Works on Paper, said, “We are delighted to continue the momentum of our robust Spring season with the April Editions auction receiving such an enthusiastic response from our community, marked by 41% of lots selling at or above the high estimate and nearly 10% of lots doubling or more the high estimate. The strength of the category across the board was underscored by bidders participating from nearly 50 countries on the phones, online, and in our saleroom at 432 Park Avenue. Collectors vied for works spanning the 20th and 21st centuries – from Camille Pissarro to Andy Warhol, Lee Krasner to Jean-Michel Basquiat, setting over 60 new auction records. Modernist female artists such as Sonia Delaunay, Francoise Gilot, Meret Oppenheim and Louise Bourgeois attracted some of the most spirited bidding of the day, along with record prices in our Contemporary Day Sale session from Katherine Bernhardt, John Wesley and Damien Hirst, as well as, in our Post War Day sale session from Agnes Martin, Vija Celmins and Robert Ryman. We were also particularly pleased with the results of the Property from the Collection of Rosa and Aaron Esman, which brought over the high pre-sale estimate and achieved 14 records led by Josef Albers’ Hommage to the Square, the complete set of ten screenprints, which realized three times its estimate.”
