Afterwards, the artists will join Catinca Tabacaru who will moderate a discussion addressing the themes taken up by the Staycation symposium Summer 2021 in Bucharest including the state of control on movement and travel, and the human and ecological consequences of the current pandemic era, motherhood in the art-world context, living and working within “the center” or its periphery, and the holy balance between leisure and work.

NARS Main Gallery and Project Space

The NARS Foundation is thrilled to begin the year with the first iteration of Re-discoveries, a new series of exhibitions that showcase the recent works of South West Brooklyn artists who have consistently made work throughout the past 25+ years. With this new project, NARS aims to create space for the diverse artistic communities in South West Brooklyn, enabling intergenerational conversations among artists and arts professionals.

Each artist addresses ideas of change and adaptation as they reflect on the past few years: a period in which their lives and the world ceased to be what it used to be. These ideas are explored through new approaches that incorporate the use of elements such as text, wax, or other components, and through incorporating psychological themes that span from states of anxiety to meditation. Thus, this collection of works is a portrait of a changing, flowing world, and an invitation to re-discover it.

All visitors to the gallery must have proof of vaccination and wear a mask at all times while indoors.

DISCOVER NEW WORKS IN OUR COLLECTION
Now including Mark di Suvero's E=MC2, Rashid Johnson's Stacked Heads, and Sarah Sze's Fallen Sky!

E=MC2 (1996–97)
Installed at Storm King on loan in 2019, marking the sculpture's first presentation in the US, di Suvero's E=MC is the tallest sculpture at Storm King at nearly 100 feet and can be seen from the nearby NY State Thruway. Recently gifted by the artist to Storm King, E=MC2 joins five iconic examples of di Suvero’s large-scale outdoor sculptures in Storm King’s permanent collection and is the first to represent the artist’s production in the 1990s.

Stacked Heads (2019)
Now on view in the museum’s North Woods, the imposing busts of Johnson’s Stacked Heads, balanced one atop the other, are constructed from bronze coated in a glossy black patina. The sculpture’s surface is textured with incised marks, reminiscent of Johnson’s distinctive, sometimes violent, manipulation of softer and more malleable materials such as shea butter, black soap, and wax.

Fallen Sky (2020–21)
On view from Storm King's 2021 season, Sze's permanent, site-specific commission Fallen Sky consists of a 36-foot-diameter spherical cavity emerging from the earth. Made up of 132 individual elements of mirror-polished stainless steel nestled into Storm King's Museum Hill, the sculpture both reflects and is embedded within the landscape. While looking at Fallen Sky and the natural environment surrounding it, viewers simultaneously experience what is above: passing clouds and birds and variations in light, weather, season, and time of day.
PLAN YOUR VISIT

Please come prepared to spend the day walking and standing outdoors, check the weather forecast, and wear comfortable walking shoes. The Art Center’s grounds comprise varied terrain including rolling meadows, hills, wooded areas, and paved and gravel paths.
