Courtesy of Yarat Contemporary Art Space MARKER 2014: ANNOUNCING SELECTED ART SPACES Marker is Art Dubai's curated programme of galleries and spaces focusing each year on a particular geography or theme. In 2014, Marker turns its focus to Central Asia and the Caucasus in 2014 and is curated by artists Slavs and Tatars. The art spaces invited to participate in Marker 2014 range from state institutions to galleries and artist-run initiatives, including: ArtEast (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan); Asia Art (Almaty, Kazakhstan); North Caucasus Branch of National Centre for Contemporary Arts, NCAA (Vladikavkaz, Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, Russia); Popiashvili Gvaberidze Window Project(Tbilisi, Georgia); and Yarat Contemporay Art Space (Baku, Azerbaijian). Slavs and Tatars are working with each space and their artists to present existing and new works that together form a collective exhibition through a ‘regime of portraiture’, including mid-twentieth-century paintings, contemporary drawings and sculptures. At the fair, Marker 2014 will take the form of a chaikhaneh or Eurasian (tea) salon, to activate each work as a point of departure, telling larger stories touching upon questions of faith, language, landscape and politics of identity. Marker also includes a new collaboration with onestar press, the renowned Paris-based artist book publisher, plus an extended education programme in partnership with Caspian Arts Foundation. Artists and artists’ collectives selected for the 2014 programme include Nadia Ayari,Youmna Chlala, Clark House Initiative, Sunoj D, Maitha Demithan, Sara Al Haddad, Shuruq Harb, Amina Menia, Maryam Al Qassimi, Mounira Al Solh and Hajra Waheed. The artists have been invited to create works that engage audiences and interact with the fair and its environment; the new commissions are likely to include site-specific installations, performances, video and research projects. THE ARMORY SHOW ANNOUNCES AN OUTSTANDING LIST OF INTERNATIONAL GALLERIES FOR ITS 2014 EDITION A Dynamic Selection of New and Returning Galleries Will Further Solidify New York in March as the Finest Destination to Experience the Best of the Global Art Market NEW YORK – The Armory Show 2014, in its sixteenth edition, will host over 200 galleries from 29 countries exhibiting an array of significant modern and contemporary works. The 2014 fair, taking placeMarch 6-9, will coincide with the opening of the Whitney Biennial, further establishing March in New York as a key moment on the international art world calendar. In line with its mission of providing an intelligent, dynamic platform for emerging and established galleries, The Armory Show will devote a special section of Pier 94 to a curated exhibition of contemporary art from China entitled Armory Focus: China. The fair will also launch the inaugural edition of Armory Presents, a new section devoted to solo and dual artist presentations by galleries less than ten years old. In its commitment to connoisseurship,The Armory Show – Modern has established a formal Selection Committee of leading dealers to help shape museum-quality presentations that touch upon many major movements of the twentieth century. Armory Presents This year marks the inaugural edition of Armory Presents on Pier 94, an expanded and re-branded take on Solo Projects, a section of the fair formerly dedicated to single artist presentations exhibited by young galleries. Armory Presents has broadened the scope of the original mission to provide exposure to the work of newly established galleries by granting additional display space and prominence to the section on-site. Additionally, projects will now include the work of up to two artists curated to reflect the nuanced programming of these cutting-edge international galleries. Participants include Ani Molnár Gallery (Budapest) showing Dénes Farkas and Athr Gallery (Jeddah) with Ahmed Mater and Nasser Al Salem, representing the first two galleries ever to exhibit at The Armory Show from Hungary and Saudi Arabia, respectively, along with C L E A R I N G (Brooklyn, Brussels) showing Harald Ankart;mor.charpentier (Paris) with Maria Jose Arjona and Teresa Margolles; Travess Smalley at Higher Pictures (New York); Jessica Dickinson at James Fuentes (New York); Grant Barnhart and Jeffry Mitchell at AMBACH & RICE (Los Angeles); Jessica Silverman Gallery (San Francisco) will showHayal Pozanti; and Klaus Merkel and Nicolás Guagnini at Galerie Max Mayer (Dusseldorf). Armory Focus The curated section of The Armory Show on Pier 94 highlights the gallery and artistic landscape of a chosen geographic region. For the fifth Focus edition, Philip Tinari, Director of The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, will curate Armory Focus: China, shining new light on the country’s contemporary cultural practice. In recognition of the dynamism of the Chinese art scene, The Armory Show will present an exciting selection of 17 galleries, many of whom will be exhibiting outside of Asia for the first time, including Beijing Commune (Beijing) showing Zhao Yao; a collaborative presentation of Zhang Ding by Galerie Krinzinger (Vienna) and ShanghART (Shanghai, Beijing, Singapore); He Xiangyu at White Space (Beijing); Chambers Fine Art (Beijing, New York) presenting Zhao Zhao;Chen Shaoxiong, Wang Luyan, and Zhao Liang at Pékin Fine Arts (Beijing, Hong Kong); Madein(Shanghai) showing Lu Pingyuan; and Nadim Abbas at Gallery EXIT (Hong Kong). Tinari remarks: “This section will showcase both the dynamism of a new generation of Chinese artists and the vigor of the country’s homegrown gallery scene. Armory Focus: China marks the most comprehensive presentation of current art from China to be mounted in New York since the early 2000s.” A full list of Armory Focus: China projects and programming will be available in the new year. Artist Commission In honor of Armory Focus: China, Xu Zhen has been chosen as the 2014 Commissioned Artist and will lend the fair his graphic identity through printed ephemera and a specially commissioned limited edition. Xu Zhen, a “chameleon of concept,” has built an extensive body of work that includes video, installation, performance, and photography. From theatrical merry pranks to quieter works playing on human sensitivity, Xu Zhen has developed a repertoire confronting social-political taboos within the context of contemporary China and beyond.
