Just a reminder that this year's conference, 'Islands on Sale: New Zealand and Pacific Arts in the Global Marketplace' will take place at Regent's University of London on Friday and Saturday this week.

General admission for 'Islands on Sale: New Zealand and Pacific Arts in the Global Marketplace'

Just a reminder that this year's conference, 'Islands on Sale: New Zealand and Pacific Arts in the Global Marketplace' will take place at Regent's University of London on Friday and Saturday this week.

We very excited by the calibre of this year's line up, from the key note address by Elizabeth DeLoughrey, to the many talented academics and professionals participating in the panel discussions across two days, and of course the opening night screening of 'No Man's Land' film at Soho Hotel followed by a Q&A with composer John Psathas ONZM (on Thursday evening).

Full programming information is included below following the ticketing information. Please do read through to get a feel for the fantastic line up. We hope you can join us for at least some, if not all, of the panel discussions, talks and performances.

This year you can choose to attend one or both of the days of talks, performances and panel discussions with a 'general admission' ticket if you are not attending as an academic. If you are an academic, please refer to the registration and other information pages of the dedicated Wordpress site for the Conference. Below we set out the links to ticket purchase for those who would like to purchase a day ticket as a member of the general public (rather than an academic registration). Don't hesitate to be in touch with questions.

We hope to see you later this week!

GENERAL ADMISSION - PURCHASE DAY TICKETS AND OPENING EVENT TICKET
Please note for your planing that each day ticket will include tea & coffee at morning and afternoon tea, but does not include lunch. However, you are welcome to bring your own or purchase lunch the Regents University refectory.

We are living in the age of selfie mania. Everyone from the Pope to Obama has appeared in one. In the past, only a handful of people were able to propagate their own images, whether it was artists like Rembrandt or Van Gogh painting self-portraits or society beauties - commissioning fashionable artists to create a flattering likeness of themselves to be admired by a select few. But now, the smartphone has democratised visual self-expression. The instant transferability of photos to social media and imaging apps at our disposal allow us all to constantly ‘curate' our look and present ourselves as we want the world to see us, recording ourselves day by day.

But what effect is this cultural addiction having on us? Do we look out at our exciting world as observers full of curiosity, or do we simply wonder how we look in it, and what filter would work best? Has the selfie reduced life to a popularity contest governed by likes, Instagram followers and Facebook friends? How do we deal with the increasing social pressure to constantly post images of an impossibly perfect self?

Huawei and the Saatchi Gallery are bringing together a panel from the worlds of cultural criticism, social media and neuroscience to discuss the impact of selfie culture from a multitude of perspectives. The event will be hosted at the Saatchi Gallery on 5th July, where the exhibition 'From Selfie to Self-Expression', presented by Huawei is currently on display.

Following the debate everyone will have the chance to participate in an exclusive photography experience using the award-winning Huawei P10, co-engineered with Leica. Drinks and canapés will be served amid thousands of works by acclaimed artists including Tracey Emin, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Cindy Sherman, Gavin Turk and Velázquez. Alongside them are selfies taken by celebrities and the general public, which have become icons of the digital era – from the beautiful and sublime to the mad, bad and downright dangerous.

Breath of Salt Air “Can the Ocean Be Both Calm and Forceful”? June 27, 2017

“Calm Tumble” 24″ x 24″ oil/wood
There is something hauntingly calm about this pinkish flat ocean. Then, you feel the pent up energy of the wave coming toward us full and strong.
I love how the foam of a crashing wave can be both translucent and almost solidly opaque. It explodes out of the transparency of the smooth sea.  Oil paint is perfectly suited to express this. Transparent color is brushed on thinly so you can see through to the surface underneath. Next you can load up the brush with thick pigment and drag the white foam downward. Both aspects of water conjured up by the nature of oil paint.
You can have an up close real-life look at this painting at:
Ille Arts 171 Main Street in Amagansett.  Be sure to check out my pen and ink drawings too.

Where are we headed? How will it be different? What will be forgotten?
While referencing mankind’s oldest and most permanent form of representation—the petroglyph—Kevin Sudeith explores the uncertain present and unwritten future of contemporary life. His rock carvings could survive tens of thousand of years; as many of their ancient predecessors already have. In this way, the works become defined by an almost extraterrestrial, futuristic wonder. They exist as both art and artifact—as an articulation of our world today and as a point of communication with the unknown of infinite tomorrows.

Where do you live while you complete a work?
I camp, but how I camp depends on the location. Originally, I camped in a tent with Persian rugs scattered around and cooked over an open fire. I quickly learned that lifestyle takes a lot of time—roughly three hours per day—so the “housework” was cutting into work too much. So now I enjoy a more Spartan lifestyle. Whenever possible, I pitch a tent. It’s nice to get out of the van; I love the sounds of the outdoors and it’s very “exciting” for an electrical storm to pass while I’m in a two-person tent. Sometimes, necessity keeps me camping in the van. And I like that too. It is cozy, but the van shakes in a strong wind.
