François Monchâtre Les Plaisirs démoniaques (Bibliothèque), 2013, bois découpé peint, plexiglas. 40 x 59 x 7 cm Les plaisirs démoniaques Le diable descend de l’arbre de la connaissance, ver immense qui porte en lui les fruits incandescents du savoir, joyaux interdits du jardin d’Eden et… atterrit tout surpris au milieu des livres sous le regard impavide des crétins de bibliothèque. François Monchâtre a toujours aimé les bibliothèques, haut lieu de flânerie de l’imaginaire. Comme il a aujourd’hui 85 ans, on peut affirmer qu’il a passé la majeure partie de son existence dans un monde où n’existaient pas les autoroutes de l’information. S’il était d’une autre génération, peut-être le diable jaillirait-il en 3D brûlé par le feu prométhéen d’un écran d’ordinateur. Notons que l’iconographie reste : seul le support change. Dans son oeuvre protéiforme, auto-maboules, machines à rêver, crétins imbus d’eux-mêmes accrochés à leurs attachés-cases, les livres ont toujours occupé une place privilégiée. Un volume, par ci, un autre par là, clin d’oeil et contre-point d’humour dispersés de la maison du poète à l’antre de l’écrivain, de la petite bibliothèquerosse à la grande bibliothèque… il coule de source qu’une exposition devait leur être consacrée avant qu’ils ne passent à la machine à laver les siècles.  Lélia Mordoch Nota Bene : pour rendre à César ce qui est à César, les titres sont de François Monchâtre. In Seeking Engagement NSA (No Strings Attached) curator Beth McNeill explores the work of eight artists in relationship to the audience’s response to what they see. Featuring work by Jack Ceglic, Tom Dash, Tapp Francke, Julia Greffenius, Jeff Muhs, Nika Nesgoda, Darius Yektaiand Gavin Zeigler. Art is a vehicle for artists to entice engagement with an audience. Whether literally or conceptually, art changes our personal and global consciousness.  We want to know what engages you?  Visitors are invited to leave a personal response that will be shared via social media. Jack Ceglic approaches his work with immediacy, almost as an attack and yet he renders a tenderness in each piece.  He creates candid and engaging life size portraits in oil stick and pastel on paper. Tom Dash uses mixed media techniques to comment on social issues, music and popular culture.  His collage and painted works in his “Pin Up” series project women and our contemporary culture. Tapp Francke’s latest mirror series engages the viewer in a process of self-reflection.  The neon word and mirrored background forces the viewer to reflect upon the inherent personal meaning of what’s being conveyed. Julia Greffenius creates playful mixed media compositions of figures, landscapes, and abstraction.  By exaggerating the highlights and softening the subject, her work appears illusory. Jeff Muhs, known for his work as a painter, recently set on re-exploring his world championship background in sculpture, surprises us with “The ODB”.  This highly realistic hand sculpted clay figure shouts hip-hop culture and iconography. Nika Nesgoda’s Virgin series is a photographic compendium that brings elements of church-commissioned paintings by masters such as Caravaggio and Rubens to large-format color slide cibachromes of porn stars as models for The Virgin Mary, serving as “perfect” reflective surfaces for fantasy, redemption, or both. Darius Yektai transcribes his feelings and memories into works on paper, canvas and sculpture. Yektai’s “Three Graces” reflects on the beauty, charm and creativity of masters such as Botticelli and Raphael.  His figures appear ethereal as they are dropped into the abstracted composition. Gavin Zeigler explores surface and color.  In his Peep Show series, Zeigler creates an interrupted playing field of figure, form and pattern.  He un-earths the beauty of the body under both subtle and bold palettes, teasing his viewers both visually and emotionally. Each artist currently lives and works on Eastern Long Island, New York. Beth McNeill is an independent curator and proprietor of McNeill Art Group, based in Southampton, New York.  Navigating the pool of contemporary art on Eastern Long Island for over twelve years, Beth is an authority on this rich historical geographic art region.  Beth has curated exhibitions, lectured on collecting contemporary art and built collections for both private and public spaces including Tiffany & Co., East Hampton, NY , The Tribeca Project Space, New York, Cantor Fitzgerald, Parrish Art Museum, Southampton, NY and The School of Visual Arts, New York, among others. New Work by Zefrey Throwell Exhibition Dates: February 28th - March 29th, 2014 Opening Reception: February 28, 2014 | 6-8 PM   January 27, 2014 (New York, NY) -- Garis & Hahn is pleased to present DREAM BATTLES, a series of new mixed-media paintings by Zefrey Throwell. From John Wayne to Joseph Goebbels, Throwell depicts duels between some of the most iconic and infamous symbols of the past century in his latest series of 20 silkscreen and acrylic paintings on fabric. He co-opts the spectacle of the prizefight by pitting opponents of ideological extremes against each other; a philosophical battle that examines the underpinnings of modern society. An opening reception for DREAM BATTLES, celebrating the artist's first solo show with the gallery, will be held onFebruary 28th, 2014 from 6 to 8 PM at Garis & Hahn (263 Bowery St., New York, NY 10002). Conceived after Throwell’s recent visit to Auschwitz/Birkenau, the DREAM BATTLESseries came about as a remedy to the artist’s crisis of faith in humanity after witnessing the indescribable horror and sinister history of the Holocaust. Especially unnerving for him was the idea that, while the Nazis were defeated, their violent and domineering tactics can still be found in a new, more clandestine modern fascism. Throwell has invented an alternative framework to consider the undercurrents of contemporary totalitarianism by creating ideological face-offs. Inspired by the penetrating humor and iconoclastic chaos of Woody Allen movies, Throwell depicts unconventional pairings that resonate with a deeper conflict. In paintings such as: “Oscar Wilde vs. John Wayne,” “Woody Allen vs. The Nazis: Annie Hall - Himmler,” and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show vs. Goldman Sachs,” the outcome of the fights is based on qualifiers such as: What is this person/thing/movement known for? What did they actually do? Did they enlighten or diminish human compassion and understanding? And, were they honestly funny? With the score tallied at the bottom of the paintings, the viewer is given an immediate read on the contributions of the figurative fighters, and prompted to more broadly consider how we are progressing or regressing in society. In this way, Throwell is engaged in a battle for hearts and minds, subverting the ‘necessary evils’ and good intentions that pave the path to hell with an alternative strategy utilizing wit, humor and aesthetics to deflect the violence, small mindedness and insecurity of contemporary fascism. About the Artist Zefrey Throwell was born in 1975 at home in Oregon. He received his B.A. from San Francisco State University. A multi-media artist working in performance and film in addition to visual art, his work and performances have been exhibited in international institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; the Cannes Film Festival, France; the Venice Biennale, Italy; the Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND), CA; the Leopold Hoesch Museum, Dueren, Germany; The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, PA; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; with solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, CA; This Red Door, Berlin, Germany; the 92 Street Y, New York, NY; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; among others.
