About the Artist | Theodor Seuss Geisel
(American, 1904-1991)
Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, began his career as a little known editorial cartoonist in the 1920's. His intriguing perspective and fresh concepts ignited his career, and his work evolved quickly to deft illustrations, modeled sculpture and sophisticated oil paintings of elaborate imagination. Dr. Seuss is currently best known as one of the most beloved and bestselling children's authors of all time, having written and illustrated classics such as Green Eggs & Ham and How The Grinch Stole Christmas! Today his "Secret Art" Collection hangs in fine art galleries around the world.

About Animazing Gallery A landmark gallery in SoHo since 1984, AFA (formerly Animazing) began as an exhibition space specializing in conceptual animation art. Over time, we broadened that scope to include works by renowned Illustrators and pop culture commercial artists as well as fine artists. In 2012, in keeping with the momentum of our natural development and growth, we revamped the gallery's program with new artists, exhibitions and endeavors and renamed it AFA (Animazing Fine Art).

Teatr ZAR - The Gospels of Childhood Triptych

Teatr ZAR
The Gospels of Childhood Triptych

March 29 - April 1, 2012

Poland's Teatr ZAR uses song, chanting, physical theater, and rich sets to examine birth, death, pleasure, and pain. The Gospels of Childhood Triptych is staged in three acts during a single evening, with the audience and actors inhabiting a different set for each act: the first and third take place in the MCA Theater with the audience on stage; and the second is in the MCA's 2nd-floor atrium. The performances take place at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Chicago, March 29 - April 1, 2012, and are presented by MCA Stage in association with Goodman Theatre.

Inspired by Eastern Orthodox ancient sacred music, The Gospels draws on texts from the apocryphal gospels and the 19th century Polish romantic poet Juliusz Slowacki. The work is the culmination of a decade of research by artistic director, Jaroslaw Fret, and the company. The Gospels exemplifies a trend in contemporary Polish theatre, described as "theatre out of the spirit of music."
Teatr ZAR: The Gospels of Childhood Triptych
VIDEO

Part 1: Gospels of Childhood / The Overture (Theater): Based on texts from the apocryphal gospels, the overture to the triptych tells the story of resurrection. Its musical structure is based on the chant singing tradition of Georgia, Bulgaria, and Greece and reveals the story of Lazarus, his sisters, and Mary Magdalene, who in the Gnostic tradition is considered one of the disciples.

Part 2: Caesarean Section / Essays on Suicide (2nd floor atrium): Explores the question of freedom and its limitations that draws on the music of Corsica, intertwining Bulgarian, Romanian, Icelandic, and Chechen songs, combined with the more modern music of Erik Satie and Ástor Piazzolla.

Part 3: Anhelli / The Calling (Theater): The poem "Anhelli," by Slowacki, follows a tragic journey of a young man through Siberia and portrays the struggles for independence and a missed calling due to human weakness. Teatr ZAR created a musical score for Anhelli based on Byzantine and Sardinian Paschal hymns.

Opening Reception - Lin Esser - "Unconventional Tableaux"

Lin Esser's new exhibition, "Unconventional Tableaux," began, in part, as an effort to replace a Dia de los Muertos box lost during childhood. Further inspired by the eccentric subjects of English symbolism, sinister figures of the renaissance and the anthropomorphic tableaux of Victorian naturalism, Esser soon found himself caught up in the creation of an entire body of three-dimensional works that he later began calling "tableaux." His dark introspective vision and extensive experience with film and theater lend a sense of the dramatic to these macabre yet playful narratives about the joys and sorrow of everyday life and beyond.

The son of a mechanical engineer, Esser spent his early childhood watching and emulating his father draft the intricate exploded drawings and cross sections of elaborate multi-cogged machinery. As a teenager, he declined a formal art education to follow work as a skilled double bass player and multi-instrumentalist. In the mid-eighties Esser continued his pursuit of dual careers by relocating to New York City. He worked with several prestigious theaters, publications and venues including the Actors Studio, Plymouth Theater and Local Project Arts Collective. Esser has scored and directed short films, exhibited his artwork and authored workshops for regional artists and musicians. He can be heard and seen as one third of the composition team currently re-scoring Hans Richter's 1921 film Rhythmus 21. And, most recently, Esser's artwork and music are the focus of Director/Cinematographer Dave Davidson's short film, "Contacting the Living," in which eight tableaux are featured.

The opening reception for "Unconventional Tableaux" is Saturday, March 3rd from 5 to 8pm. While free and open to the public, RSVP is requested to rsvp@afanyc.com.

AFA is located at 54 Greene Street (corner of Broome Street), in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City. Hours are Monday - Saturday, 10am - 7pm and Sundays 11am - 6pm. To request more information or images contact Heidi Leigh at heidi@afanyc.com or 212.226.7374.

Hosting approximately 350 artists, the Uptown Art Fair caters to tourists, art enthusiasts, artists, and festival-goers from around the country.

Uptown Minneapolis is an eclectic mix of commercial, retail, and residential properties in South Minneapolis.  The intersection of Lake Street and Hennepin Avenue is the center of a lively, upbeat business district and is one of the busiest intersections in the state of Minnesota, creating the perfect location for a fine art festival. Lake Harriet, Lake of the Isles, and Cedar Lake are only a few blocks away, making Uptown's tree-lined streets both welcoming and walkable.
