Entries should meet at the intersection of fashion and fine art through design, costume, or culture. Keyes Art presents an extraordinary, can't-miss summer show blending legendary works with vibrant contemporary art, in our bright new gallery at 53 The Circle on Main Street, East Hampton. On view at this show, “About the Light,” will be the works of Willem de Kooning, Mary Abbott, Lester Johnson, and Darius Yektai.          The iconic de Kooning was one of the pioneers of Abstract Expressionism and a founding father of Pop Art. He was acclaimed for his abstract still lifes, figures and vigorous colors.          Abbott, his colleague, is also one of the premier artists of the Abstract Expressionist movement, whose signature is her sweeping brushwork and vivid palette. A pioneering artist, she was one of the few women in the Abstract Expressionist Movement. Her lineage traces back to John Adams, who was her great, great great-grandfather.          Johnson was admired for his expressionist brushwork, creating unforgettable paintings of the human figure, his favorite subject. His style also seemed to capture the kinetic pace of New York City, where he lived.          Yektai, an artist and sculptor, is widely known for his landscapes, large textural paintings of figures, powerful ocean waves, and vibrant flowers. Introducing the 2018 Art Series Flora, Fauna & Football

Flora, Fauna & Football: Mexico. 2018  | Acrylic on canvas  | 60x48 inches

It is a new generation. Art must change too. With flora, flaura, and football I wanted to depict perspective in different forms through geometry and scale of figures. I also wanted to depict the duality between the real and virtual world through the use of fine brush strokes and linear strokes. The paintings show a different array of colors balancing though different sizes in shapes. Each color was picked by either the county's flag or their landscapes. Flora & fauna display motion through the use of static images positioning in different parts of the painting, while the bodiless figure depict motion through the use of a larger brush strokes.

Why does football brings so much joy to so many people globally?  I believe that it is because of the combination of; rooting for a team that represents your culture , your country, your colors and it is a global sport that anybody can play. Football, for many people, it is part of your heritage and roots.  It grows on us as specific flora and fauna grows on every part of the world. Perhaps, this is why some team's nicknames are often called after some animals from that specific region. Although there is a wide variety of flora and fauna in every country [because of their different climate, soil, and vegetation zones], there are some specific animals or plants/flowers that are representative of that country. This painting is about the flora & fauna from Russia. The brown bear and the imperial eagle are 2 of the fauna that can represent this country and the camomile is the official flower of Russia. The painting is finally finished and it will be exhibiting in Moscow at Boogie Gallery during the last 2 weeks of the World Cup.

These two new paintings, will be part of a World Cup exhibit in Moscow from July 3rd to July 18th at Artplay & Boogie Gallery.

Holly Coulis Island June 30 - August 4, 2018 Opening reception: Saturday June 30, 6-8pm COOPER COLE is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new paintings by Holly Coulis. This marks the artists first solo exhibition with the gallery. Titled Island, this exhibition features a suite of new paintings that engage line, colour, and space as the basis of consideration to Holly’s study of still life and landscape painting. In respect to content and composition the two genres blur together naturally. Grapefruits astral plane above tabletops as orange suns rise over a desert scene. Cherries reflect off of mirrored water. A balanced papaya feels weighted like a mighty papaya tree rooted on the horizon. Holly’s show title refers to the idea of a painting acting as a place of containment. As such the canvas can be thought of as a tabletop, or a separate world. There is an energy in these paintings that can’t be denied. Holly’s lines vibrate off the surface, challenging the two dimensional confines of her medium. Her imagery is abstracted, so that representational images of everyday objects can be read simply as geometric forms. Colour becomes paramount as does the space given to the shapes. These paintings radiate in a way that upends our preconceptions of the still-life. Holly Coulis (b. 1968, Toronto, Canada) received her BFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design, Toronto and her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She had solo show at Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery, New York; Sardine, Brooklyn; Cherry and Martin, Los Angeles; Atlanta Contemporary, Atlanta, USA; Claudia Groeflin Gallery, Zurich; Groeflin Maag Galerie, Basel, Switzerland; Simon Lee, London, United Kingdom.
