CASPER FAASSEN - DUNE VARELA - SIMON ROBERTS

11-14 Aprile    |   11-14 April    |   12-20 h    |   noon - 8pm

Characteristic of Casper Faassen's works is his continuous innovative approach to materials, techniques and disciplines. In addition to painting and graphic art, Faassen dedicates much of his time to the photographic medium. It is in his photographic work that we recognize the Leiden painters who inspired him. His signature works depict classic 17th-century themes such as cityscapes, vanitas paintings, and flower arrangements.

A look at Faassen's work as a whole reveals that themes such as transience, beauty and feminine splendor form the basis of his work. The work "Omani I" is a finalist for the BNL Paribas award.

While the image tends to transform into a dematerialized flow, replacing the collective consciousness, Dune Varela redistributes a solid and concrete consistency to it, to the point of physically attacking it.

For Dune photography becomes a sculpture in itself, in a combinatorial game of supports, volumes, formats and textures where different temporal layers converge. In the mind of the observer, confusion arises between the printed photographic plate and the print media material. Are we looking at a sculpture, a photograph of a sculpture, or a combination of the two? Is there a direct connection between the photographed object and the place where it was exhumed?

Beneath the Pilgrim Moon (2021) is a collection of photographs taken at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London while it was closed to the public during the second COVID-19 lockdown. Photographing the marble sculptures housed in the Dorothy and Michael Hintze Galleries, which were covered at the time for their protection during the site's renovation, Simon Roberts conceived of the veiled statues as metaphors for our broader experience of the pandemic. He says: “The images speak to the extraordinary events of recent years, of us as a nation shrouded in PPE and covered behind our masks, suspended in time, limited in our movements and freedoms. We have been forced to separate from each other, or if should we meet, hug through thick sheets of plastic or wave through the windows.

Roberts is well known for work that explores the relationship between people and place, often focusing on the interior spaces where people gather to share a sense of collective history and cultural identity.
