New Job for Dennis: NEW MUSEUM APPOINTS DENNIS SZAKACS ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR IN A NEW POSITION GEARED TOWARD INSTITUTION’S NEXT PHASE OF GROWTH

NEW MUSEUM APPOINTS DENNIS SZAKACS ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR IN
A NEW POSITION GEARED TOWARD INSTITUTIONS NEXT PHASE OF GROWTH

New York, NY…Lisa Phillips, Toby Devan Lewis Director of the New Museum, announced today that Dennis Szakacs, formerly Deputy Director of the institution and, more recently, Director and CEO of the Orange County Museum of Art, will rejoin the staff of the New Museum as Associate Director.

In his new role at the New Museum, Szakacs will oversee all finance- and development-related activities, and will focus on business planning and the further development of both earned and contributed income. Additionally, Szakacs will help spearhead major initiatives planned for the upcoming fortieth anniversary of the New Museum in 2017—a year that will also mark the tenth anniversary of the Museum’s acclaimed building on the Bowery, designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA. Szakacs will work closely with Phillips, Deputy Director Karen Wong, and Artistic Director Massimiliano Gioni.

Szakacs was Deputy Director at the New Museum from 1997 to 2003, when the institution was still housed in a loft building on Broadway. During those years he worked with both founding Director Marcia Tucker and Phillips. Prior to joining the New Museum he served as Director of Development and, later, as Deputy Director at P.S.1 in New York. From 2003 to 2013, Szakacs was Director and CEO of the Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach, California, where he elevated the institution’s national and international profile through distinguished exhibitions and a significant touring program. He also doubled the museum’s operating budget and substantially increased its endowment. The New Museum and the Orange County Museum of Art also collaborated on several projects during Szakacs’s tenure, including exhibitions devoted to John Waters and Mary Heilmann, and the ambitious restoration of the monumental work A Tale of Two Cities by late artist Chris Burden, in preparation for the New Museum exhibition “Extreme Measures” (2013–14).

“Dennis’s knowledge and understanding of the New Museum’s history and unique character run very deep,” said Phillips. “It is particularly fitting that he returns to us at an exciting time of institutional growth, as we approach our fortieth anniversary and the decade anniversary of our arrival on the Bowery. We will celebrate these milestones with special initiatives, including a major campaign for endowment and future expansion. Dennis’s entrepreneurial spirit is entirely in step with the New Museum ethos, and we look forward to having him on our senior team.”

ABOUT NEW MUSEUM
The New Museum is the only museum in New York City exclusively devoted to contemporary art. Founded in 1977, the New Museum is a center for exhibitions, information, and documentation about living artists from around the world. From its beginnings as a one-room office on Hudson Street to the inauguration of its first freestanding building on the Bowery designed by SANAA in 2007, the New Museum continues to be a place of experimentation and a hub of new art and new ideas.

Hi I am not thinking of Sept. yet but some art organized: TAI XIANGZHOU: Celestial Tales Opening Reception: September 10, 6–8 PM

TAI XIANGZHOU: Celestial Tales
297 Tenth Avenue, New York
September 10 – October 3, 2015
Opening Reception: September 10, 6–8 PM
Paul Kasmin Gallery is pleased to present Tai Xiangzhou’s inaugural solo-exhibition,Celestial Tales, at 297 10th Avenue fromSeptember 10 – October 3, 2015. This exhibition will debut monochromatic ink paintings from the Chinese artist’s most recent body of work.
Collected by major museums and institutions in the U.S., such as the Brooklyn Museum and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum at Harvard University, Celestial Tales marks Tai Xiangzhou’s premier exhibition at a contemporary gallery. Tai’s latest works reinterpret traditional Chinese ink painting through the study of meteorites and reveal an increasingly more vibrant and expressive style than his previous series, Genesis, which explored these traditions through biomorphic forms.
Under the tutelage of master ink painter Liu Dan for over a decade, Tai incorporates the old master’s tradition of landscape painting with a fresh approach incorporating the philosophies and ethos of today. Exclusively using paper created with 10th century techniques and Qianglong era ink, Tai believes that “to present landscape painting that meets modern tastes, we must start from the experience of modern society – by properly accessing the living spirit of art, researching the materials, techniques, medium and modern time-space experience. In short, we should not only keep alive traditional art, but also the tradition of art.” The artist’s lively brushstrokes exude an incredible energy and style that are uniquely his own.

Tai Xiangzhou (b. China, 1968) graduated with a Doctorate from the Art Academy of Quinghua and has studied ink painting under Liu Dan since 2005. He is currently in the collections of the Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art and Archaeology at Peking University, Beijing, China; Arthur M. Sackler Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA; Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY; Nasher Museum of Art, Duke University, Durham, NC; Princeton University Art Museum, Princeton, NJ; Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT and has work on loan to the collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO. He currently lives and works in Beijing.

Bo Derek puts perfect “10” equestrian heroes in the limelight

Hollywood actress Bo Derek, star of the romantic comedy "10" and recently cast in the cult Sharknado series on US cable network SyFy, has been announced as Chair of the Jury of the prestigious FEI Awards 2015, the annual awards launched by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), the world governing body of equestrian sport.

A lifelong horse lover and riding enthusiast, Derek is the International Ambassador of the Lusitano Horse, a spokesperson for the Animal Welfare Institute and serves on the California Racing Board.

The FEI Awards 2015, in association with the FEI’s Top Partner Longines and with international fashion designer Reem Acra, celebrate the world’s exceptional equestrians, saluting excellence, courage, commitment and dedication.

“The FEI Awards honour the deep contributions that our horses, riders and everyone in the equestrian community make to our society,” Bo Derek said.

“I already know that judging these awards is not going to be easy, and we have just one month to the nomination deadline. I urge everyone to think of those who are working with and taking great care of our phenomenal horses, and those who are doing their upmost to achieve the best for horse sport, and for our society as a whole - they need your votes!”

Bo Derek, who also lends her support to a number of animal, conservation and aid organisations, including Richard Branson's Wild Aid and Yasuni-ITT rainforest preservation, and to wide-ranging initiatives dedicated to helping veterans find work after returning home from service, was honoured for her contribution to equestrian sport with a Longines Ladies Award in 2014.

Her autobiography, Riding Lessons: Everything That Matters in Life I Learned From Horses, reflects her enduring love and understanding of equines and other animals, which she weaves into photography assignments for the likes of Vanity Fair magazine and her film projects.

“I am honored and excited to be working so closely on the FEI Awards 2015, and looking forward to seeing the nominations flow in,” Derek added.

Nominations for the FEI Awards 2015 are open at www.feiawards.org, with five hotly-contested categories:

The Longines Rising Star Award is for equestrians aged 14 to 21 who demonstrate outstanding sporting talent and commitment.

The Reem Acra Best Athlete Award celebrates athletes who, over the last 12 months, have demonstrated exceptional skills in the arena, and have taken equestrian sport to a new level.

The Against All Odds Award rewards people who have pursued their equestrian ambitions despite physical issues or extremely difficult personal circumstances.

The Best Groom Award is dedicated to the vital behind-the-scenes team members who work 24/7 to ensure that horses get the best possible care and attention.

The FEI Solidarity Award will be presented to an FEI Solidarity or equestrian development project, or an individual or organisation that has demonstrated skill, dedication and energy in expanding equestrian sport.

Bo Derek will be joined on the FEI Awards 2015 judging panel by FEI President Ingmar De Vos; Juan-Carlos Capelli, Vice President and Head of International Marketing of Longines; fashion designer Reem Acra; Carmen Barrera, Chair of FEI Regional Group V (South America); and Ulf Helgstrand, President of the Danish Equestrian Federation and Vice President of the European Equestrian Federation.

Glamorous Gala with Bo Derek
The FEI Awards 2015 winners will be flown to the glittering FEI Awards Gala presented by Longines in Puerto Rico’s capital San Juan on 13 November, where Bo Derek will present the awards.

Over 350 guests from the global equestrian community, including members of the FEI’s National Federations around the world, will also attend the gala to celebrate the award winners.

Nominations for the FEI Awards 2015 will close at midnight on 28 August.

Fridge Art Fair –
Fridge Art Fair was born in 2013 on New York’s Lower East Side. The inaugural Fair was filled to capacity with exhibitors who answered Founder Eric Ginsburg’s challenge“Can you fit into the Fridge?” at Kazuko Miyamoto’s small but storied storefront, Gallery OneTwentyEight. The Fair has gathered a growing following of exhibitors, sponsors and visitors through two more New York editions, as well as two previous Miami fairs in 2013 and 2014. So far, each Fridge Art Fair has coincided with Frieze New York in May and Art Basel Miami in December.

Fridge Art Fair is the boutique, soft sell, dog-friendly satellite fair dubbed as, “The baby who has refused to obey orders to stand outside the door while the adults confabulate inside,” by Artinfo.

Fridge Art Fair Founder and Artist Eric Ginsburg, known for the uniquely soulful and painterly qualities of his portraits, Eric credits Sol LeWill as a patron and friend who commissioned works, as well as a mentor, and, along with Eric's "pen pal" William Wegman, as “kind of a hero.”

Heather Marx Art Advisory Presents Monthly Curated Collection

John Warren Travis

Heather Marx presents her seventh online collection with artists Mary Button Durell and John Warren Travis. Each spent most of their working lives in high profile, creative mediums before devoting themselves, full-time, to the visual arts. They have been in their Mission studios producing ethereal and gutsy works for close to two decades, creating sophisticated bodies of work that have, until recently, gone unrecognized.
For his latest series of watercolors on stonehenge paper, Travis paints onsite at Buena Vista Park, a former cemetery in what is now San Francisco’s Haight/Ashbury neighborhood. Travis pares down each landscape into halos of color, fog, light and line work that captures the drama and mystery of this unique scenery. There is an element of intimacy and meditation in these watercolors that emanates Buena Vista Park’s storied history--lines allude to the the shifting perspectives of tree limbs, branches, leaves and the views beyond. Mary Durell's textural and diaphanous pieces mimic biomorphic forms, suggesting the infinite organic fabrics that make up the natural world, from the ethereal and cosmic to the microcosmic. Each natural, free-form piece transmits light and illuminates shadow depths, creating undulating patterns throughout the day. Basic principles--line, light and color--play essential roles as each work seems to reconfigure the complexity of the universe into simple materials. It’s important to note that this will be the first time Durell’s bas-relief line pieces will be debuted on the HMxAA Shop. [To view more Mary Button Durell work, visit the website]

John Warren Travis received his MFA from Stanford in 1967. He is a retired Professor Emeritus from the Department of Drama, University of California at Berkeley where he taught Costume Design and Costume History and instituted The Costume Study Collection and Undergraduate Minor in Costume.  He studied studio art at California College of Arts & Crafts, Art Students League and The San Francisco Art Institute. He has been painting for over 15 years and has had recent solo exhibitions at: Claremont Foundation in Claremont, CA; Curated State in San Francisco, CA; and a forthcoming show at Ligne Roset in San Francisco, CA.
Mary Button Durell studied at California College of Art and Crafts in Oakland, CA and The San Francisco Art Institute. She has exhibited widely in San Francisco including: Southern Exposure, Limn Gallery and the San Francisco Arts Commission. She recently completed residencies at Creative Growth in San Francisco, CA and Chalk Hill in Sonoma, CA.
