Exhibition Tomorrow - Taking your Time - Robert Barry

Taking your Time - Robert Barry
Exhibition from Saturday February 18 to Saturday April 28, 2012
Opening in presence of the artist on Saturday February 18, 2012 from 6 pm to 9 pm

1, 2, 3, 4, 5 goes the title of Niele Toroni’s book. As it seems our time is running out, let’s take our time. Let's take a cushion, a book and consult the book on a cushion.

Take your time to sit for a moment and read a book, that is what Robert Barry proposes in this new exhibition at mfc-michèle didier gallery, entitled Taking your Time.

The artist has collected books since the 60’s and has selected for this exhibition 27 works from his personal library that are related to «time». The productions are carefully selected in a wide spread of time going from 1966 to 2008 and represent this universal idea of time through their title, their cover or their content.

Moreover, Robert Barry's curatorial proposal is to place these books on a table, the "Time Table" as he calls it. This presentation is enhanced by his decision to duplicate the pages of each book that he considers important on the walls of the gallery.

At this occasion, mfc-michèle didier gallery presents all its productions created with Robert Barry to this date, giving the visitor all the time to appreciate the mystery of the work Art Lovers, to consult the 25 volumes of One Billion Colored Dots and to watch the film One Billion Dots

In partnership with les Cahiers du MNAM, the latest issue containing Frédéric Paul's text on One Billion Colored Dots will be available for consultation at the gallery.

New Works by Mark Gonzales in 212Gallery

212GALLERY

212GALLERY is pleased to present a group of six new large-scale sculptural works by Mark Gonzales (b. 1969). This exhibition marks the first time this series of mirror poems has been on view since its unveiling at Los Angeles MoCA’s historic survey of street art (Art in the Streets, 2011).

In this body of work, a synthesis occurs between Gonzales’ trademark linguistic and physical modes of expression. Gonzales’ poetry, simultaneously impulsive and profound, is energetically rendered in spray paint on the slick surfaces of six prodigious mirrors. The epodic exploration of various themes using “automatic spelling” and oft-invented syntax as seen in Gonzales’ countless self-published zines is revisited in these monumental works.

Though it is Gonzales’ dynamically-executed verse that elicits pause and demands closer study, the corporeal qualities of these works quickly seduce. In a colloquial nod to “skate culture”, Gonzales’ use of spray paint suggests reclamation of the raw graffiti-style textthat is so often associated with skating. By way of the monumental and uniquely architectural ground, the viewer is allowed – forced, perhaps – to physically occupy the space around the art and the art object itself, thereby merging the acts of creation and experience – and conflating the roles of artist and patron.

Mark Gonzales began his professional skateboarding career 30 years ago; a legendary athlete, Gonzales went “pro” in his early teens. Gonzales has always been a prolific art-maker and writer, and first began showing his work in the early 1990s. He has had solo exhibitions at museums and galleries in Japan, Germany France, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and the Netherlands, in addition to New York and Los Angeles. This is Gonzales’ first show in Aspen.

Images are available upon request. Please call 970-925-7117 for further details.

212GALLERY features innovative, established and emerging international artists working across media including, photography, painting, sculpture and mixed media. Gallery Hours are Monday through Saturday 10-7 and Sunday 10-6. 212GALLERY 525 East Cooper Avenue, next to Ralph Lauren.

BMO Harris Bank Chicago Works - Laura Letinsky

BMO Harris Bank Chicago Works
Laura Letinsky

February 7 - April 17, 2012

In February, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago presents the second exhibition in the Chicago Works series with the work of Laura Letinsky. Letinsky is known for elegantly composed still-life photographs that engage with sentiments of desire, fulfillment, and loss, as well as the fleeting nature of time. For her exhibition, Letinsky presents a new body of photographs, Ill Form and Void Full, which opens on Tuesday, February 7, and runs through April 17, 2012, and is curated by MCA Pamela Alper Associate Curator Julie Rodrigues Widholm.

Recently, Letinsky's studio-based practice has evolved in a new direction that incorporates photographs - from magazines as well as her own and others - to make images that play with the perception of space in her still-life compositions. Actual objects, such as papaya, cherry pits, silverware, and ripped paper, along with images taken from art reproductions as well as decor and cooking magazines, are carefully arranged, resulting in a disorienting collage within the photograph.

By working with pre-existing images, produced by a culture that also consumes them, Letinsky is able to shift, connect, and delight in the process of making meaning. She has long been interested in the genre of still lifes because of the way it indicates a societal trend towards material things and stands in for the psychological and the emotional, as well as for politics and ideology.

Laura Letinsky is a professor and Chair of the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Chicago, Born in Winnipeg, Canada, she has a BFA from the University of Manitoba (1986) and a MFA from Yale University (1991) and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2000. She has exhibited widely including exhibitions at the Renaissance Society, Chicago; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography; Casino Luxembourg; Galerie m Bochum, Germany; and Nederlands Foto Institute.

Chicago Works is a series dedicated to artists of all generations, and at various points in their careers, living and working in Chicago. The exhibition series, which launched in November 2011, presents new bodies of work by four artists each year.
