In a daylong celebration for all ages, revel in the splendor of birds with concerts, philosophical bird walks, arts and crafts, and children’s literature..

The specially created Bird Zone offers drop-in family programs and music from French composer and ornithologist Olivier Messiaen’s Catalogue of Birds, played in live excerpts by various solo pianists throughout the day in the Hall of North American Forests.

In the evening, solo pianist Taka Kigawa performs select movements from Messiaen’s 13-part composition, which evoke specific bird songs.

Following the concert, philosopher Simon Critchley and Paul Sweet, the museum’s beloved ornithologist, will discuss the philosophical implications of flight.

For all my readers who may attend heads up Volta Basel June 11-16, 2018 has move it's location

Announcing new location near Voltaplatz
VOLTA14 moves location for the upcoming 2018 edition, inaugurating the former COOP distribution center at Elsässerstrasse 215, adjacent to Novartis Campus, the Basel headquarters of the global healthcare company. Following the adage “there’s no place like home”, VOLTA’s new venue is a five-minute walk from Voltaplatz, site of the original VOLTAshow and down the street from where the Rhine baptized its founders back in 2005. VOLTA14 opens in previews on Monday, 11 June and continues through Saturday, 16 June, concurrent with Art Basel Week 2018.

Amanda Coulson, VOLTA Artistic Director, notes: “VOLTA's journey started 14 years ago at Volta-Platz in Basel, right around the corner from our latest venue. Throughout the years, VOLTA consistently claimed new territory through content and location. Always evolving, continuously reinventing our shape, consistently moving forward, constantly exploring new terrains and positions. We aim to do what we do best: providing a platform for professional gallery work while remaining a place for research and discovery.”

VOLTA’s activation of the COOP warehouse, now owned by the City of Basel, marks the beginning of a neighborhood-wide rejuvenation plan, which will include a school and a variety of creative startups and ateliers in the following calendar year. VOLTA, Basel’s fair for new international positions, sets the tone by planting its artistic flag as the first major event within the space. The exhibition hall atElsässerstrasse 215 features 2,500 square meters, industrial functionality. Approximately 75 galleries from across the globe will mount compelling projects within this space, with a full exhibitor list to be announced in the coming weeks. Additionally, familiar faces to the VOLTA Basel brand — including Meyers Culinarium, Aesop, and Volta Bräu — will further outfit the hall with culinary delights and VIP resources.

VOLTA14 in Basel follows a successful eleventh edition of VOLTA NY in March, which featured the critically received curatorial project The Aesthetics of Matter, co-curated by Mickalene Thomas and Racquel Chevremont, as well as the commencement of VOLTA’s multifaceted creative and social endeavor, VOLTA Cares — from an artist-designed tote bag benefiting a local charity, to engagement with families of institutional partners — to further develop and assert what an art fair can and should be.

VOLTA14 connects with Art Basel via the Dreirosen-Bridge: 4 minutes by automobile, 9 minutes by bicycle, and 15 minutes by direct tram (Line 1) to Voltaplatz. The hall is likewise connected via direct tram (Line 11) from Basel’s main train station (SBB), as well as from the Schaulager.

Hayground School Films Honored at 2018 Guild Hall Student Film Competition

Hayground School Films Honored at 2018 Guild Hall Student Film Competition

BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY. On March 29 at 6:00 pm, the winning films of Guild Hall's Annual Student Film Competition were screened at the theater. The Awards Ceremony once again included several student films emerging from Hayground School's Young Filmmakers program taught by Liz Bertsch and Mbachi Kumwenda.
In the first through fourth grade category, "Ghost Haunting" by Ryder Patrowicz nabbed first place. Also taking first place in the fifth through eighth grade category was "Dropped" by Phoenix Bliss, Dash Breen, and Leonardo Dougherty. "Braille" by Hayground's Charlie Troy and Owen Wood placed third in the same division.
According to Jennifer Brondo, the general manager of Guild Hall's John Drew Theater, 54 films were submitted this year by students enrolled in schools across the South Fork as well as several who are home-schooled. Five judges then viewed all the films and selected the top three in each age group.

Hayground teacher and program creator Liz Bertsch notes, "Hayground filmmakers often express the importance of making films that appeal to their target audience - kids just like themselves.  Each year they look forward to Guild Hall's Student Film Competition because it provides an opportunity for East End young filmmakers, from a variety of schools, to come together to celebrate and learn from the work of one another. "
Launched as a way of exploring storytelling through a visual medium, Hayground's Young Filmmakers program has expanded into a full-blown intensive in the art and craft of making films. Students begin the year meeting with local filmmakers, studying short independent films and exploring a wide variety of film techniques. Working in teams, they then storyboard, write, produce, direct and animate their own original short films. The year-long program culminates in Hayground Movie Night, where the young filmmakers gather to share and celebrate their work in a public viewing at Haygound School.
