Denise Bibro Fine Art is pleased to announce Don Kimes' third solo show at the gallery entitled, Remixing Abstraction: Cheating the Banal. The exhibition will open December 3, 2020 and run through January 30, 2021. Remixing Abstraction: Cheating the Banal is comprised of work completed within the past three years. Like works in his previous solo exhibitions at Denise Bibro Fine Art, these works have evolved from experiences and assimilations of adversities from the past thirty years or more. Kimes' personal tragic event of losing years of painting, drawing, and inventory from a flooded studio has been the catalyst for constant sourcing of memories and experiences that are transformed into art. This journey has crossed a path were the experience of loss has fine-tuned his present work, allowing no room for the formulaic or decorative. Kimes' work has evolved counter to the "Zombie Abstraction" movement that current critics like Jerry Saltz note as being without context or history. Kimes divides his time between Washington, DC, New York State and Italy. He is represented by Denise Bibro Fine Art in New York City, where he has also shown at Frederieke Taylor, Kouros, Lucky Strike, National Academy of Design, Arsenal Gallery, Ammo Artists Space, The Brooklyn Museum, and Prince Street Gallery. He has exhibited internationally at Rueda Museum, Madrid; The Florence Biennale; Rocca Paolina, Perugia; Casa de Cultura, Mexico; Living Art, Milan; and America Haus, Munich, among many others. Kimes teaches at American University in Washington, DC. He is also Artistic Director at the ACI program, a residency for artists and writers in Umbria, Italy. He has been a finalist for the position of Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts and has served as Artistic Director in the Visual Arts at the renowned Chautauqua Institution from 1986 through 2018. |
