Mark Todd's Force Field at La Luz de Jesus ignites impressive fanbase
Mark Todd's Powerfury Fireworks Stand from his Force Field exhibition, now on display at La Luz de Jesus Gallery, has been a huge hit with Independence Weekend crowds. His high concept idea to blend two great juvenile obsessions; comics and fireworks, has rendered a very mature art piece: an installation that is already being hailed as one of the landmarks of the year. All of the collage pieces and most of the paintings have already sold, so Mark has decided to allow collectors to buy individual pieces from the fireworks stand. The fireworks themselves are now available for purchase in five sizes at incremental price points between $100 - $200, which is a real steal. Todd has also been adding to the stand with each visit to the gallery, making the installation a continuing work in progress adding a deeper degree of vitality to an already ostentatious centerpiece. Far from an art snob, Mark Todd is a prolific zine publisher, will be exhibiting at both Comicon and A.P.E. and teaches at Art Center College of Design. He's also amassed an impressive fan following if the attendees to his opening reception are any indication of his collectors: Ashton Kutcher & Demi Moore, Jeanne Tripplehorn & Leland Orser, director Patty Jenkins, Simpsons creator Matt Groening, and several rock 'n rollers, museum curators and journalists.

Mark Todd also has a new piece in the Lucid Dreams exhibit at the Noel-Baza Fine Art Gallery in San Diego (through August 9) featuring 45 internationally renowned artists. Lucid Dreams is the 26th artist survey and fine art exhibit curated by San Diego based designer Mark Murphy of Murphy Design, following up last year's Narrative Museum exhibition, "Survey Select," which featured 32 live events over eight weeks.

Dr.  Margaret Cochran, Transpersonal Psychologist, Educator and Author with 30 years  of clinical experience discuss how to use the Enneagram as a tool in  understanding the personality of individuals, co-workers and relationships. The  Enneagram is an ancient system of nine fundamental personality types that  explain important psychological traits of our personality and where our  motivations stem from. Each Enneagram personality type has its own set of  perceptions, challenges and views of the world. The Enneagram help us to  realize what motivates us, and how to better understand the sometimes confusing  behavior of our friends, family and co-workers. During this event, Dr. Cochran  will share the mental and emotional value of knowing your Enneagram personality  type and will help you to determine your personal Ennegram.

at the Art League's Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery

Art Exhibition: July 20 - August 14, 2011
Opening Reception: Friday, July 29, 2011, 5pm-8pm

"Brushworks - One Island, Three Views", features recent artwork by these award winning artists - Doug Reina, Melissa Imossi and Iacopo Pasquinelli. Long Island is the inspirational muse for all three artists, however the approach of each artist differs, resulting in artwork that is surprisingly diverse.

Doug Reina, a native of Long Island, studied art at Buffalo State College and later
with various local artists, including Stan Brodsky, Joseph Reboli (1945-2004),
Art Cumings and Christian White.

Melissa Imossi, also of Long Island, moved to Italy, where for seven years
she studied classical realism at various academies in Florence, including the
prestigious Angel Academy of Art.

Iacopo Pasquinelli, an Italian native, studied with noted Florentine painter
Tiziano Bonnani, before moving to the U.S. and falling in love with painting
 the exotic Long Island landscape.

The diverse training and backgrounds of each artist has resulted in three unique techniques that are well illustrated by the paintbrushes on the banner pictured above. Doug Reina often uses large paintbrushes to create areas of clean, clear impasto color that is rarely blended, Melissa Imossi uses several coats of transparent paint, blending colors into each other when needed. Iacopo Pasquinelli uses soft brushes to create luminous, panoramic paintings that are carefully blended and full of atmosphere.

Tune in to this Sunday's July 17 edition of SundayArts on Thirteen and WLIW21 to learn more about this exhibit.
The segment will air on Thirteen at 12 noon and on WLIW at 3:00pm.

UBS 12 x 12: New Artists / New Work: Anne Elizabeth Moore
August 6-28, 2011

Chicago-based artist Anne Elizabeth Moore leads Garment Work, a durational collective performance project in which the artist and visitors deconstruct one of America's most iconic fashion elements: denim jeans. Moore turns the gallery space into a performance/workshop/discussion to create a connection between Cambodia's garment manufacturing industry, where the jeans are made; to Michigan Avenue, where the jeans are sold. Garment Work debuts at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Chicago, on the evening of August 5 during First Fridays as part of the monthly UBS 12 x 12: New Artists/New Work and runs through August 28, 2011.

Her exhibition is a symbolic meditation on the international garment trade and women's issues in developing nations, and presents research about the origins of the jeans and the experiences of their makers and sellers. On Tuesdays and Saturdays during the exhibition, Moore and visitors take the jeans apart by hand.

Performance Schedule
Friday, Aug 5:               The artist performs during the First Fridays opening
Saturday, Aug 6:           11 am-12:30 pm and 1:30-3 pm

She is the founding editor of the Best American Comics series, co-publisher of the now-defunct magazine Punk Planet, and the writer of Unmarketable: Brandalism, Copyfighting, Mocketing, and the Erosion of Integrity and the upcoming Cambodian Grrrl. She has exhibited in Germany, Austria, and Cambodia, plus at the Armory and the 2008 Whitney Biennal in New York City. She discusses her work in a free, informal gallery talk on Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at 6 pm.

UBS 12 x 12: New Artists / New Work
The MCA's project series UBS 12 x 12: New Artists / New Work is a series of consecutive exhibitions where a different artist is presented each month. It is designed to highlight new work by emerging artists who are based in Chicago to provide a fresh, up-to-the-minute view of new developments taking place in the studios of our city. SECOND ANNUAL FALL AFFORDABLE ART FAIR RETURNS TO NEW YORK CITY
September 22-25, 2011 at 7W New York(7 West 34th Street)

(New York, NY) The Affordable Art Fair New York City. Shaking up the dusty model of art as an elite pass time, the Affordable Art Fair Fall 2011 will showcase new artists, galleries, programming, and installations!  With the immense success of last year’s inaugural fall installment, and the record breaking attendance and sales of the Spring fair, the Affordable Art Fair NYC Fall edition,  September 22-25, 2011 at 7W New York (7 West 34th Street), is sure to be a must attend event.

The Affordable Art Fair celebrates the idea that art is for everyone.  Whether you are an experienced collector or an art novice, this fair is about the joy and excitement that art should bring to your life.  By presenting contemporary art priced from $100 - $10,000, with three-quarters of the work under $5,000, no one looking to own art should leave the fair empty handed.  At this edition, the fair will present nearly 65 international and national galleries exhibiting original paintings, sculptures, photographs, and prints.

“We cannot wait for our fall fair to open as it is looking to be even better than our spring edition, which was amazing” says Judith Pineiro, Director of Affordable Art Fair NYC and LA. “With a terrific group of galleries at the fair, we have a great balance of new exhibitors and returning ones.  What our visitors will find thrilling is that we are presenting an entirely new roster of artists from our spring edition.”

The uniqueness of the Affordable Art Fair carries over to the programming the fair offers for its diverse audience.  Whether it is a family outing or a night on the town, you will want to take full advantage of everything offered:

  • Private Preview Party, Wednesday, September 21, is a festive event, where attendees get a sneak peak at the fair before general admission hours.
  • Recent Graduates Exhibition,Photographs, Pictures, and Images, curated by mr. and mrs. amani olu, will feature work by unrepresented recent MFA and BFA students.
  • An engaging panel chat will be held with expert advice on art collecting with Artstar.com.  Visitors will leave this talk empowered to make purchases with confidence!
  • Artists will lead guests through the fair highlighting their top picks!  Hosted by The Art Dossier, this is a rare chance to see through the eyes of an artist.
  • Interact in our Kids’ Studio with balloon artist Larry Moss leading classes!  Hosted by LittleCollector.com, this will get your kids excited about art!
  • A ‘hot topic’ talk with artist Micah Ganske, whom will discuss the intersections of art and technology, also hosted by Artstar.com.
  • Open studios with the Ladd Brothers, hosted by The Invisible Dog, fair goers will get to watch these artists at work!
  • Free Admission hours are back too!  All visitors on Thursday, September 22 from 4:00-8:00PM, can come enjoy the fair, free!

Affordable Art Fair Past and Present
Twelve years ago, Will Ramsay changed the model of the traditional art fair by creating the Affordable Art Fair, where contemporary art is accessible to all. Now in nine locations around the world, Affordable Art Fair proves that you do not need to be an art expert or a billionaire to have original works of art by living artists in your home or office.  With the fair taking place annually in  Amsterdam, Bristol, Brussels, London (spring and fall), Melbourne, Milan, New York (spring and fall), North London, Singapore, and Sydney, over $270 million worth of art has been sold at the fairs. The success of the brand continues with the estimated millionth visitor to the Affordable Art Fair expected in 2011.
