With a toast to the city led by Paul Allen and The Honorable Ed Murray, Mayor of Seattle, the inaugural Seattle Art Fair roared into action on Thursday evening. The Seattle Art Fair opened to an animated, engaged crowd of 4,000 collectors, curators, museum directors, and art lovers as a unique moment focused entirely on the city itself​. The people of Seattle responded with a powerful enthusiasm reflected in strong sales and sizable attendance. Visitors to the fair's acclaimed first edition were met with an intriguing exhibition​ ​of ​sixty-two local, regional, and national galleries alongside a program of public installations, performances, and special exhibitions.  Sales were robust across the board, with acquisitions of important work reported ​in all price ranges. Gagosian Gallery enjoyed an active Preview and noted the enthusiasm of the crowd, which included prominent collectors as well as museum directors and curators from across the region. New York City's Allan Stone Projects​ sold​ a Dan Basen mixed media piece and a Wayne Thiebaud early work on paper in the fair's opening moments. Paul Kasmin Gallery sold ​Revolution #2, by Ivan Navarro, Pace Gallery placed two of their stunning teamLab interactive digital installations, and David Zwirner Gallery sold work by Oscar Murillo and Christopher Williams in the fair's first hours​. Seattle's Greg Kucera Gallery also saw sales across their program's presented price points including the placement of Sherry Markovitz's Poodle Head, two Margie Livingston paint pieces, and a William Kentridge. ​​James Cohan Gallery saw significant interest in the works of Spencer Finch and and sold several pieces by Elias Sime. Adelson Galleries sold Jamie Wyeth's Sisters - Six in a Suite of Untoward Occurrences on Monhegan Island. Other highlights include Catharine Clark Gallery's sale of sculpture by Wanxin Zhang and Jonathan Ferrara Gallery​'s​ placement​ of work by Skylar Fein and Nikki Rosato. ​Seattle's Roq La Rue sold work on paper by local artist Amanda Manitach as well as acrylics on panel by Travis Louie and Camille Rose Garcia. Samsøn Projects sold work by Mark Cooper to a prominent New York City collector, ​New York's Maxwell Davidson Gallery sold ​several works by Thomas Witte, and Seattle galley Winston Wächter Fine Art sold four mixed media and sculpture by Dustin Yellin.  The first two hours of the Seattle Art Fair opening night Preview raised over $85,000 for Artist Trust. Dedicated to supporting Washington State artists working across all disciplines by providing professional development through training programs like Edge and I Am An Artist, Artist Trust funds upwards of 85 artist grants, totaling over $300,000 each year. CA 101 2015 is produced by the Friends of Redondo Beach Arts (FRBA), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts in Redondo Beach.  Today, thanks to the efforts of many volunteers, city officials and the community at large, Redondo Beach has become the center for the arts in the South Bay. CA 101 2015 will be held for two consecutive weekends, July 31-August 2 andAugust 7-9. Opening night will be held Friday July 31 from 7-10pm.  This is the fourth year for the CA 101 art exhibition with Nina Zak Laddon serving as Juror/Curator and Sandra Liljenwall as Exhibition Director for the show. The CA 101 2015 event is an unparalleled venue for artists to exhibit their work. The AES dormant steam station has a soaring ceiling, large expanse of windows facing the Pacific Ocean, open space and unique backdrop of the original machinery. Chicago, IL (May 19, 2015) - KM Fine Arts is pleased to announce Carole A. Feuerman | New Works, a solo exhibition of new sculptures by the artist, on view from July 31, – September 15, 2015 at the gallery’s Chicago location at 43 East Oak Street, Chicago, IL 60611. The exhibition will feature a selection of both life-size and small-scale works by the artist. An opening reception will be held on Friday, July 31, from 6-9pm with the artist in attendance. Carole Feuerman (b.1945) has received critical acclaim for her hyperrealist sculptures of swimmers and bathers for over forty years. A number of her most iconic images, including Balance, Serena and Miniature Quan will be featured in the exhibition alongside life-size works, Christina and Next Summer. Executed in painted resin with tactile flesh and meticulous detail, Feuerman’s sculptures have a presence that is both contemporary and classical. While it is not uncommon for hyperrealist work to seem cold and unapproachable, Feuerman’s bathers, balanced and calm, are unexpectedly intimate and inviting. Genuine mink fur is used for the replication of eyelashes and hair, and the details of the tanned skin, fingernails, and bathing suit ripples are painstakingly painted on. These details combined with the perfectly formed water droplets made of clear resin create astonishingly life-like sculptures. A number of swimmers are even dressed with swim caps that are bejeweled with red and crystalline Swarovski Crystals. The artist states that she, “sculpt[s] the human figure so lifelike, the pieces seem to breathe...This can take up to 100 different coats of paint, and glazing and sanding in between coats, to get the finish and luminosity needed. From start to finish, the process of creating a sculpture can take from 6 months to several years." Two of her bronze works, Miniature Tree and Miniature Diver will be featured in the exhibition. The body of the diver is arched into a sensuous C-shape and speaks to her understanding of the Golden Mean: an ancient mathematical equation epitomizing balance and proportion. The bather featured in Miniature Tree is posed with an S-curve, or contrapposto, typical of classic Greek and later Renaissance sculpture.  Feuerman lives and works in New York. She has had six museum retrospectives and her work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the 2008 Olympic Fine Arts Exhibition, the Venice Biennale, The State Hermitage, and The Palazzo Strozzi Foundation, to name a few. Among her many honors are 1st-Prize-Best in Show at the Beijing Biennale, the Amelia Peabody Sculpture Award, the Betty Parsons Sculpture Award, and the Medici Award. Her work is in the selected collections of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan, President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Henry Kissinger, Mikhail Gorbachev, the Forbes Magazine Collection, the Caldic Collection, and Credit Suisse Collection. Selected public collections include Grounds for Sculpture, the El Paso Museum of Art, the Boca Raton Museum of Art, the Bass Museum and Art-st-Urban. In 2000, she was elected to be a member of the International Woman’s Forum, where preeminent leaders of diverse professional achievement from finance to fine arts come together to make a difference and to take an active, leadership role in matters of importance. In 2013 her sculpture, The General’s Daughter was featured in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. There are four full-color monographs written about her work: Carole Feuerman Sculpture, both editions published by Hudson Hills Press, La Scultura in Contra la Realta, which is available in multiple languages, and Swimmers, published by The Artist Book Foundation.

They've been stopping by every week in preparation so we know it's going to be a killer event. Tell your homegirls!   The Think Tank has seen a lot of different stages in its growth, literal and figurative. We are excited to bring a ton of them together for our Summer Sendoff BBQ series next month, which you'll hear more about on this newsletter and our social, so keep an eye out. We never could have guessed that we'd be where we are, but being contracted by the City to program festivals and plotting mural takeovers with neighborhood leadership are two exciting fronts we're eagerly diving into. This Summer Sendoff series is a chance for us to go back to our DIY roots. Dope art, music, knowledge sharing, all of it. Artist-run spaces pop up all over LA and we love every single one; we're thrilled that we are still around during this renaissance, and we hope to see all of our brothers and sisters in similar spaces thrive and find crazy new things to try like we get to. We also can't wait to unveil some of the things we're rolling out through 2015.

ArtPalmBeach Expands New International Exhibition Programs  ArtPalmBeach celebrates its 19th year on January 20-24, 2016 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center and is recognized as Florida’s longest running mid-winter modern, contemporary and emerging art fair. While continuing to focus on selecting the finest modern, contemporary and emerging art galleries internationally, fair organizers are excited to write a new chapter in ArtPalmBeach’s 19 years of history by unveiling the fair’s new international art programs. Sculpture Invitational: A New Dialogue ArtPalmBeach will host a number of large outdoor sculpture exhibitions in 2016. Sculpture exhibitions will be on view during the months leading up to the fair central public areas in Palm Beach. Galleries who are on the Edge of breakthrough talent.  Works on Paper With such a large number of artists exploring the medium of paper, ArtPalmBeach believes it is a perfect time to create a platform for exhibition specializing in Works on Paper Pavilion to explore the newest trends in art of the paper.  Once seen as a historical reference in history, paper has now transcended to a contemporary medium through the uses of watercolors, pen, charcoal, perforation and sculpture. Works on Paper will highlight international limited editions, original works on paper and new forms of three dimensional paper art works. This program will be partnered with the Collector Lecture and Panel Discussion series  throughout the fair.  Modern 20th Century Masters  Last year’s fair  collectors overwhelming positive response to  a exhibitions which were  focused on early and late 20th Century masters including early Picasso paintings by  Sorolla, Renior, Miro, Monet, Lam, Matta, Calder and Matisse. The 2016 fair edition will see a significant expansion in early historical works from Italian, French, American and Latin American masters. SWAROVSKI CELEBRATES LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL WITH NEW INSTALLATION BY KIM THOMÉ AT THE V&A

London, July 23, 2015 – London-based designer Kim Thomé has collaborated with Swarovski on Zotem, an 18-meter-tall double-sided monolith embedded with more than 600 bespoke Swarovski crystals.  Zotem, a landmark project for the London Design Festival September 19 – 27, is set to be unveiled at the V&A on September 15.

Featuring a colorful blend of light and movement, Zotem will occupy a central space in the Museum, rising vertically from the Grand Entrance up to the Contemporary Ceramics gallery, on the sixth floor and will be in place from September 15through to October 31 this year. Making use of the high atrium that connects the Grand Entrance with the Ceramics Galleries, Zotem creates a visual link between the two spaces, prompting visitors to explore the building’s interior architecture in a new way.

Zotem is a dynamic piece, designed to draw visitors’ eyes upwards. Rising and falling through the floors, prismatic colors and linear patterns are reflected and refracted by Swarovski crystal to create an entrancing visual illusion. The installation comprises custom-made Swarovski crystals scaled up to 2.5 times their regular size and displayed in a grid pattern within a frame of matte black aluminium.

A roll of vividly printed mesh runs in a continuous loop inside the two aluminium faces – moving up one side and down the other. As light shines through the graphic mesh and the crystals, the pattern and colour is projected and distorted, creating a dynamic effect that brings the crystals to life.

The title, Zotem is a word-blending of the sounds and meanings of ‘totem’ and ‘zoetrope’ – a 19th century animation device that pre-dates film and gives the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of isolated drawings that appear to move as they flick past the eye in quick succession. The looping mechanism of Zotem, which is visible through the open sides of the structure, also references the traditional animation device.

Kim Thomé commented: “I was inspired to create a piece which really fills the magnificent space within the V&A, helps visitors to climb upwards and explore the Museum, and celebrates the colors and mystery created by these giant cut crystals. My visit to Swarovski’s Kristallwelten gave me the confidence to play with scale, and the creative and technical collaboration with their engineers allowed me to create these amazing crystals especially for this project. I love the way it looks digital, but is actually a giant visual illusion”.

Kim Thomé

Norwegian born Kim Thomé runs his studio from East London, working on private commissions and developing new installations and furniture. Kim graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2012 and has since exhibited at A Palazzo Gallery, William Bennington Gallery, 100% Norway, Pavilion of Art and Design (PAD), Habitat and recently showcased for Wallpaper* Handmade in Milan. His works finds a balance between installation and objects, working to blend a mixture of graphic elements and optical play in material and spaces. www.kimthome.com
