THE ARMORY SHOW OPENS ITS ‘CENTENNIAL’ EDITION AND KICKS OFF ARMORY ARTS WEEK 2013

THE ARMORY SHOW OPENS ITS ‘CENTENNIAL’ EDITION AND KICKS OFF ARMORY ARTS WEEK 2013

NEW YORK, March 6: At a press conference at 11:00am EST, the Mayor of New York, Michael R. Bloomberg, will inaugurate the 2013 edition of The Armory Show, New York’s leading fair for contemporary and modern art, highlighting the city’s recognition of the event as a key moment in its annual arts calendar and a cornerstone of the American art market. Mayor Bloomberg will also launch Armory Arts Week, a rich program of cultural events and exhibitions taking place across New York City.

Over 200 specially selected galleries will present key historic and contemporary works from approximately 1,000 artists, with many participating exhibitors honouring the legacy of the original Armory Show of 1913, from which the fair takes its name. The 1913 salon is widely credited with introducing the European avant-garde to the United States. This year also marks the second edition of Solo Projects, a section of the fair dedicated to single artist presentations.

Armory Focus: USA, the fair’s specially curated section which this year shifts its gaze inward to the USA, also pays homage to the shocking and revolutionary impact of the 1913 exhibition. Curated by Eric Shiner, director of The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, it will showcase an exciting selection of 17 established and emerging galleries, providing surprising insight and commentary on contemporary practice in America. Furthermore the fair’s Open Forum, curated by Anne Barlow, Executive Director of Art in General, will feature a series of talks inspired by, and expanding upon Armory Focus: USA, highlighting artistic practices across America, and the history and legacy of the groundbreaking original Armory Show of 1913.

Noah Horowitz, Executive Director of the Armory Show, remarks: “This is an important year for The Armory Show, both in New York and as an international Fair. I’m delighted that the strength of the 2013 edition has been reflected across so much of our programme, from the incredible works brought by our exhibitors - over 2,500 of which have been viewed online prior to opening – to our special projects.  We are also honoured by the prestigious and talented individuals who have joined our new collector group, the Centennial Committee, and I look forward to their input in future editions of one of New York’s major lynchpins of the art market.”

Further on site highlights include two limited edition art works by this year’s commissioned artist Liz Magic Laser, internationally acclaimed for her often provocative performance work, the proceeds of which will go to the Museum of Modern Art and the Pat Hearn & Colin de Land Cancer Foundation. The fair will also host the second edition of Armory Film, curated by Moving Image, which will feature a selection of works by leading contemporary film and video artists represented by Armory Show exhibitors.

For the second year running, the fair will be designed by Brooklyn-based architects Bade Stageberg Cox.

Armory Focus: USA to be Curated by Eric Shiner, Director of The Andy Warhol Museum

Eric Shiner, Director of The Andy Warhol Museum, Appointed Curator of
Armory Focus: USA
In Celebration of the Centennial of the 1913 Armory Show, The Fourth Edition of Armory Focus Will Exhibit the Achievements of Contemporary Art in America
NEW YORK - Armory Focus, the curated section of The Armory Show, highlights the gallery and artistic landscape of a chosen geographic region. As part of this year’s reflection on the arrival of the avant-garde in America, Eric Shiner, Director of The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, will curate Armory Focus: USA, presenting a broad snapshot of the country’s contemporary cultural practice. The Armory Show’s 2013 program will celebrate the centennial of the original Armory Show of 1913, a groundbreaking exhibition credited with bringing modernism to America.
As American artists, galleries, and institutions continue to grapple with and re-position modes of self-reflection, Armory Focus: USA will examine the forefront of artistic practice—the core of our inherited legacy stretching back to the 1913 Armory Show—by showcasing contemporary responses to integral questions of artistic production in the United States. In recognition of our country’s extraordinarily diverse cultural output, we will offer a select group of galleries from across America the opportunity to present their unique programming, providing a forum for an ever-expanding national conversation at the fair.
In light of his appointment, Eric Shiner notes, “I am most excited to curate the 2013 Armory Show Focus section and to gauge the pulse of contemporary art production in America today.  A celebration of the first Armory Show in 1913—an event that ushered in the avant-garde to this country—next year’s fair will stand as a testament to the fact that the avant-garde took root here and prospered, just as it will highlight the very best artists and artworks available today.  Although it will certainly be challenging to give a barometer of what contemporary art from America has become, I hope to put together a witty and far-sweeping Focus section that makes visitors stop and think about America, art, and ultimately their place within it.”
Michael Hall, Creative Director of The Armory Show, says, “We are delighted to announce the appointment of Eric Shiner, whose curatorial insights will craft an exceptional take on the visual culture flourishing in our own back yard. At the helm of a cutting-edge institution in the heart of America, Eric was the perfect choice to lead this section, defining the new avant-garde of the early twenty-first century.”
Noah Horowitz, Executive Director of The Armory Show, states, “America has always been a country defined by its attraction to the frontier, and a century after the original Armory Show gave American artists license to break conclusively with the past, that frontier is increasingly being explored through art that addresses the most complex issues of our time, from the pervasive influence of technology on modern life to the atomizing force of globalization. In Armory Focus: USA, we are proud to survey this artistic vanguard through the lens of our distinguished curator, Eric Shiner.”
In addition to Armory programming that will take place leading up to and during the fair, several of our cultural partners will host exhibitions relating to the 1913 Armory and the development of modernism. During the fair, the Museum of Modern Art will present Inventing Abstraction, 1910–1925 (December 23, 2012–April 15, 2013); the Metropolitan Museum of Art will exhibit African Art, New York, and the Avant-Garde (November 27, 2012–April 14, 2013), displaying African artifacts acquired by New York’s artistic community during the 1910s and 1920s; and the Montclair Art Museumwill show The New Spirit:  American Art in the Armory Show, 1913 (February 17–June 16, 2013). The New-York Historical Society, meanwhile, will host The Armory Show at 100, featuring such canonical works as Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase, first viewed on American soil at The Armory Show of 1913. The exhibition will open in October 2013.
About the Armory Focus Curator
Eric C. Shiner
is the Director of The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA. Shiner has organized and curated three major exhibitions since his appointment to Director in 2011, including: Factory Direct: Pittsburgh, an exhibition showcasing the artwork of 14 established contemporary artists invited to conduct artist residencies in Pittsburgh-based factories; Deborah Kass: Before and Happily Ever After, a major mid-career retrospective of paintings and sculpture by the New York artist; and the 2011 Pittsburgh Biennial, an exhibition at The Andy Warhol Museum dedicated to artists whose work aims at transgressing boundaries and engendering transformative change in a nod to Gertrude Stein and her life’s work. Shiner is committed to positioning The Andy Warhol Museum as the epicenter of Andy Warhol’s legacy, as well as a global contemporary art destination. He is an active writer and translator, a contributing editor forArtAsiaPacific magazine, and an adjunct professor of art history at The University of Pittsburgh. He received a Bachelor of Philosophy in The History of Art & Architecture and Japanese Language & Literature from The University of Pittsburgh’s Honors College in 1994, an M.A. in The History of Art from Osaka University in 2001, and another M.A. in The History of Art from Yale in 2003.  He joined The Andy Warhol Museum as The Milton Fine Curator of Art in 2008.

By: Örn Alexander Ámundason, Performed by Metropolis Ensemble, Andrew Cyr, Artistic Director/Conductor
The Wall Street Journal Media Lounge
What does a financial collapse sound like? This is a question posed by the Icelandic artist Örn Alexander Ámundason in the 14-minute concert Kreppa. Ámundason, who has explored what happens when politics are transformed into music, has identified thirteen main protagonists, given each of them an instrument and transformed their voices into a music score. The resulting work is performed on Opening Day of The Armory Show in collaboration with Metropolis Ensemble. Kreppa is generously sponsored by Stund styrktarsjóður and the Icelandic Art Center. Metropolis Ensemble’s performance is generously sponsored by Robert Bielecki and Fast Orbit.

OSLOO—A COLLECTION OF CENTERS—In New York
By: FOS
The Wall Street Journal Media Lounge
Osloo is a floating pavilion that has taken place on several occasions, latest as part of the Danish Pavilion during the 2011 Venice Biennale. The platform hosted a range of programmed public events that all addressed the idea of public space under the theme “public spiritualism”. Osloo is a major manifestation of FOS’ practice that extends from large-scale installations and sculptures to music, performance and design, all brought together under the term “social design”. For the two-hour event at The Armory Show, FOS will recreate the model of the events at OSLOO in Venice under the title: A Collection of Centers. The program will include: The Neo-Relational Performance by D.O.R (NO/BE); in-between protagonist performance by Rastafarian H.C. Andersen; a small introduction to swarm intelligence; a lecture on patterns in music; “Small White Man” a music conduction. Musicians will include Michael Hanf, vibraphone; Rasmus Bille Bahncke, SH101; Pavel Kogan, guitar; David Mason, electric drums; Matt Parker, saxophone; Mikkel Hess, drums; Special appearance by Tiffany Roth (Midnight Magic) and Findlay Brown, musician. Production coordinator is Maibritt Borgen.

Speakers active in the Nordic region will include: artist Ragnar Kjartansson, representative of Iceland in the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009 and recipient of the prestigious Malcom Award at Performa 11 last November; Icelandic singer-songwriter, Bjork; Gunnar Kvaran, Director of the Astrup Fearnley Museum in Oslo and Curator of the 2013 Lyon Biennale; Dorothée Kirch, Director of the Icelandic Art Center; Anette Østerby, Director of the Danish Arts Council; Lisa Rosendahl, Director of Iaspis, Stockholm; Danish art historian Niels Henriksen; Finnish curator Taru Eflving; Danish artists Marie Kølbæk Iversen and Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen; Kati Kivinen, Chief Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki; and Sanne Kofod Olsen, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Roskilde.
