Art folks, before getting wrapped up in glamorous art parties and the business of collecting during New York’s Armory Week, the pulse of emerging new media arts is happening right here on the gritty grounds of White Slab Palace. Opening the 2011 Armory Week is “Sonic Architextures”, an evening of performances remixing strands of analog and digital improvisations – a balance of post-punk impulses, subliminal electronics, vinyls and harp with arty experimental films, including Rey Parla's “Rumba Abstracta” and Peter Gregorio’s “Holographic Principal Generator”. Framing the night’s performances are Maximus Clarke’s Anaglyph 3-D spectacles dubbed FREEDOM FILTERS. Audiences are encouraged to participate and have their portraits taken on the green screen for future retrospection. Thomas Watkiss opens the night with hypnotic drones meticulously composed to set the ambiance. Using dense layers of symphonic chords, composer Zach Layton performs an improvised set with special guest. Renowned as the avant-garde ensemble – MERCE is the musical vision of Maria Chavez and Shelley Burgon – creating a sonic atmosphere Chavez’s turntables culls from her “pencils of sound” while Burgon’s harp melodies unifies the whole experience. Tonight, Merce collaborates with visual artist Rey Parla, whose rigorous and experimental multimedia work is a dance of stimulating visual music.

Expert Reveals Historic Accuracy of Oscar™ Hopeful’s Representation of Women in the Old West
Nancy Williams loved the new film adaptation for True Grit, and even though the depiction of its defiantly strong teenage girl Mattie Ross wasn’t completely true to history, she felt it was true enough.
Williams, an expert on women’s issues in the Old West, said her only problem with the character of 14-year-old Ross, as played by Oscar hopeful Hailee Steinfeld, was that she did not represent the typical young woman of the Old West.
“At first glance I would say True Grit was not very true to history,” said Williams, also a veteran staffer of women’s crisis centers and author of Hawkmoon (www.nlwbooks.com). “Frontier women typically didn’t carry a gun, straddle a horse, or talk back with such brazenness. They either kept the house, cooked and tended the children, or they were school teachers or prostitutes. The stereotypes we see in the typical western novel or movie are not without basis in reality.”
The character of Mattie Ross did, however, match up with legends of some of the few women who stood out from the crowd as strong women who straddled their horses as they rode them against the grain.
“Despite the fact Mattie was not typical of the young girl of that era, there are enough women in the history of the Old West that broke the mold to make the story of True Grit believable,” Williams added. “Calamity Jane, Annie Oakley and a particularly feisty woman by the name of Sally Skull are a few that come to mind. These women, like Mattie Ross, were tough, capable, and sometimes deadly, rivaling any man in the ability to shoot, ride, play cards and talk trash.”
While not completely true to history, the character resonates with modern audiences because of the changing role of women in America, according to Williams.
“I think the modern woman is more able to identify with strong female characters like Mattie Ross,” she added. “No longer can we relate to the frontier wife who works at home and cooks, cleans and feeds the chickens. Showcasing women who can ride with the boys is another way that will keep westerns contemporary. Hollywood does it all the time: homosexual cowboys in Brokeback Mountain, repentant killers in Unforgiven and Mattie Ross, with her undeniable grit.”

Nancy Williams is a graduate of Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. She worked as the grant writer for Women’s Services, Inc, a domestic/sexual violence center. Nancy grew up on a farm in Meadville. She is the winner of the Paul Gillette Award in the 2009 Pikes Peak Writers’ competition for her novel Grace. Hawkmoon is her first published novel and was a finalist for the Colorado Humanities 2010 Book

The First Annual Athena Film Festival (www.athenafilmfestival.com) will take place February 10th through February 13th at Barnard College. In its inaugural season, the Athena Film Festival will examine the values women leaders share—vision, courage, resilience—and explore leadership across race, class, and culture.
Film is a medium known to nearly all people in nearly every part of the world. And films have power. They create conversation. They reveal truths. They inspire.
Why Now?
In 2010, for the first time in history, a woman won the Oscar for best director. Directing is the most visible leadership position in film yet, in 82 years, only 4 women have been nominated for best director, and only a single woman has won. In 2009, in the 250 top-grossing domestic films, women made up only 7% of directors, 8% of writers, and 17% of executive producers. 98% of these films had no female cinematographers. And, in front of the camera, as of 2007, women had less than 30% of the speaking roles.
Through feature films, documentaries, and shorts, the Festival will explore what makes a leader.
- Is it the ability to inspire people to fight injustice or stand up for the rights of those who are powerless?
- Is it about defining and preserving one’s own dignity or protecting one’s family or community?
- Is it about motivating others to change when necessary, to learn from failure?
The festival will examine the values women leaders share—vision, courage, resilience—and explore leadership across race, class, and culture.
The Festival will highlight the wide diversity of women’s leadership in both real life and the fictional world, illuminating the stories of women from across the globe who have made a difference in their countries and communities. Our goal is to open a robust dialogue about women and leadership: what it takes to excel, collaborate, lead, and inspire.

Recent Works by Susan Kadish & Christopher Delloiacono
Susan Kadish and Christopher Delloiacono, both Long Island-based artists specializing
in three-dimensional representations, display their recent works at the
Art League's Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery January 15 - 30.
Kadish's works, strongly influenced by ancient Asian materials and methods to create unique clay forms and vessels, as well as an array of her figurative Buddha sculptures, are an expression of her artistically diverse abilities. Delloiacono's current body of work uses the ceramic wheel as a tool of both construction and deconstruction. His goals are to demonstrate both his intuitive abilities with the medium and convey a powerful, conceptual perspective.The combination of both Mrs. Kadish's representationaland figurative work and Mr. Delloiacono's conceptual and abstract work exhibits the true beauty of Clay convergence.
Proceeds from the sale of Mrs. Kadish's work will be donated for scholarships for children with learning disabilities through the Art League of Long Island.
Proceeds from the sale of Mr. Delloiacono's work, especially created for this event, will be donated
to United Cerebral Palsy of Nassau County.

JUDIT REIGL: NEW WORKS ON PAPER AT ROOSTER GALLERY, 190 ORCHARD STREET, LOWER EAST SIDE, NYC OPENING RECEPTION: THURSDAY, JANUARY 13, 6-8PM FROM JANUARY 13 – FEBRUARY 13 Rooster Gallery Contemporary Art announces celebrated artist Judit Reigl’s “New Works on Paper,” opening on Thursday, January 13, 2011. This upcoming exhibition of the doyenne of writing-painting features works done specifically for Rooster’s space, and complements Ubu Gallery’s current exhibition of Reigl’s graphic works and paintings. Judit Reigl (born 1923) fled Hungary in 1950 and has been working since then in Paris, where she was first championed by André Breton. Her initial surrealist aesthetic was soon replaced by an abstract style consonant with the New York School.
The works being shown at Rooster Gallery represent Reigl’s return, after several decades of
different approaches and perceptions, to gestural painting.
Reigl’s work is currently on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. In addition, Reigl’s works are held by Tate Modern, London; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo. LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5, 2011 - Online video sharing site Vimeo(R), an operating business of IAC [NASDAQ: IACI], today announced that it has increased the size of a single file that a Vimeo Plus member can upload from 2GB to 5GB.
As one of the only video sharing websites without limits on video length, this increased file size option gives Vimeo Plus members the ability to upload long-form content without compromising quality through heavy file compression. On average, 5GB is enough space for roughly 2.5 hours of HD video. Creators can now share their feature films, full-length documentaries, or a whole Little League game in HD.
