INQUIRE Lowell Ryan Projects is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Rachel Rickert entitled Wind and Rattlesnakes. This exhibition marks Rachel Rickert's debut solo show in Los Angeles and her first collaboration with Lowell Ryan Projects. The exhibit features over thirty paintings created during this past summer in both Wyoming and Joshua Tree, CA. These oil-on-panel plein-air works offer vibrant and intimate portrayals of vast landscapes, revealing their captivating yet imposing beauty. Rickert's exuberant use of color allows her to capture the nuances of time, temperature, and weather patterns, offering unique experiential glimpses of her surroundings. Rachel Rickert's approach to plein-air painting has evolved with her recent move from Brooklyn to Joshua Tree. This transition has transformed her practice into a literal and metaphorical journey. While the works depicting the Joshua Tree landscape are now often painted from the land surrounding her home, the works painted in Wyoming were created on hiking expeditions over the course of a month-long trip. The process of painting plein-air in both locations can be grueling, as it involves enduring harsh weather conditions such as sun, wind, rain, heat, and cold, often within the same day. However, these challenges yield intimate paintings that capture moments of sheer bliss and awe. Although not overtly feminist in nature, Rickert’s practice is rooted in a deep respect for strong, independent women who have paved the way before her, such as Lois Dodd, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Gretel Ehrlich. Rickert chooses to focus on personal moments, emotions, and places rather than pursuing explicitly political agendas, viewing this as a genuine form of liberation and empowerment.    Rachel Rickert painting in Joshua Tree, CA, photographed by Kate Shearer, 2023 Rachel Rickert was born in 1990 in Bethesda, MD, and lives and works in Joshua Tree, CA. She received her MFA from the New York Studio School in 2015, and her BFA from Washington University in St. Louis in 2012. Rickert has exhibited with galleries including Alice Gauvin Gallery, Portland, ME; Auxier Kline, New York, NY; Danese/Corey, New York, NY; Jill Newhouse Gallery, New York, NY; The Painting Center, New York, NY; and Capsule Shanghai, Shanghai, China. She has participated in residencies including ACI Artists, Writers and Scholars Residency, Corciano, Italy; Jentel Artist Residency, Banner, WY; and the Vermont Studio Center Residency, Johnson, VT. Her works are represented in public and private collections such as the Xiao Museum of Contemporary Art, Shandong, China, and the Boise City Department of Arts and History, Boise, ID. A Meyers Manx Collaboration with Artist Sage Vaughn Contributes $200,000 to Arts Education Fundraiser

The first vehicle in the commissioned series debuts

 at The Party at Crystal Bridges

A Meyers Manx Sage Vaughn Art car was up for auction at a recent Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art fundraising auction held in honor of Annie Liebowitz and sold for $200,000 on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023.

The Meyers Manx Sage Vaughn is part of a five-car series commissioned by Phillip Sarofim, founder and CEO of Los Angeles-based venture capital firm Trousdale Ventures and Chairman of Meyers Manx. While all of the body shells for the series have been completed, the remaining cars in the set will be assembled and displayed to the public. The sold vehicle is the only car in the series that has been completed. Vaughn is a Los Angeles-based artist known for his graphic, collage-like paintings.

Explaining the rationale for his donation, Sarofim stated, “Arts education is a cornerstone for fostering creativity and diversity of thought. I am so proud to see the sale of this Meyers Manx, an emblem of California’s artistic legacy, contribute to the educational programming provided by Crystal Bridges. This car encapsulates 60 years of California creativity: from its original designer, Bruce Meyers, to Sage Vaughn whose works I hold in high regard. I am so excited to unveil the remainder of this series to the public and am thrilled that this Manx is staying in Bentonville.” 

This Meyers Manx Buggy is constructed utilizing the recycled chassis of a 1960s-era Volkswagen Beetle. It is representative of the historically significant buggy that Bruce Meyers designed in 1964 and that became a part of the zeitgeist of the 1960s. Meyers created the first compact, fiberglass dune buggies as well as helped popularize the sport of off-road racing after setting a highly publicized record for the fastest vehicle down the Baja Peninsula. Manx buggies, known for their superior quality and traditionally built by hand, are frequently used as a creative canvas by their builders, who are still able to purchase self-assembly kits from the company. This vehicle, the first of a series featuring artwork by Sage Vaughn, exemplifies the individualized nature of these highly personable vehicles. 

The Party at Crystal Bridges brought together a variety of guests, including art industry professionals, cultural icons, and more, for an evening that raised more than $2 million in funds for the museum’s art education programs. The theme of the event, A Dance with the Light, was inspired by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz on the occasion of the Annie Leibovitz at Work exhibition at Crystal Bridges.

Trousdale Ventures purchased Meyers Manx from the founder and original designer, Bruce Meyers, in 2020 with an eye towards rebooting the legacy brand as an electric vehicle manufacturer. Opening October 14 at Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America, Narrative Threads: Works by Eight Nordic Artists presents multi-media artwork by Nordic artists, each distinguished by their innovative use of natural, synthetic, and digital materials. Exploring Nordic craft traditions through a contemporary lens, the works in the exhibition engage with material experimentation, and digital technology, with textile design, ceramics, stitching, painting, audio recording, and assemblage offering diverse narrative expressions and perspectives. The exhibition will feature the work of eight internationally celebrated artists: Margrethe Aanestad (Norway), Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir / Shoplifter (Iceland), Hildur Ásgeirsdóttir Jónsson (Iceland), Hildur Bjarnadóttir (Iceland), Astrid Krogh (Denmark), Heidi Hankaniemi (Finland), Marianne Huotari (Finland), and Kristina Riska (Finland). Narrative Threads will be accompanied by a range of programming, including Gallery Tours taking place regularly on Wednesdays at 5:30 PM. Monthly evening adult art workshops that explore techniques and themes presented in the exhibition will be offered by Icelandic teaching artist Melkorka Helgadottir. Their works on view will explore personal histories and intergenerational discourse, while influenced by ages-old handicraft techniques and cultural traditions. Margrethe Aanestad’s abstract drawing and sculpture subtly reference landscapes and the celestial sphere. Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir (known as Shoplifter) works with both synthetic and natural hair tocreate sculptures, wall murals and site-specific installations exploring themes of vanity, self-image, fashion, beauty, and popular myth, while Hildur Ásgeirsdóttir Jónsson uses silk and dye to create large-scale fabric installations based on the landscape of her native Iceland. Hildur Bjarnadóttir’s woven paintings, audio pieces, and large-scale silk installations investigate issues of belonging, ecology, place and cohabitation with animals and plants in Iceland; Astrid Krogh explores the dialogue between natural and artificial illumination when paired with fibers, while Heidi Hankaniemi’s practice incorporates the tactile and the performative. Marianne Huotari’s distinctive ceramic works weave tradition with contemporary art by applying the classic Finnish textile technique with unpredictable materials. Kristina Riska has been exploring and redefining the traditional tenets of ceramic sculpture since the 1980s with unorthodox, large-scale works inspired by nature and the properties of light and shadow.   PUBLIC OPENING:  Saturday, October 14  WHERE:                  Scandinavia House                                58 Park Ave., NYC 10016 GALLERY HOURS:   Tuesday through Saturday, 12-6 PM                              Wednesdays, 12-7 PM Download Full Press Release Generous support for this exhibition has been received from the Inger G. & William B.
