This is a fundraiser for the AOFTA Artists in Residence program with the James County public school system. Artists will be treated to wonderful food, beverages and live music. Your application and acceptance to the show are not based on your ability to be open on Friday evening but your location may be affected. Jurors do not know if you have chosen to participate.

For more than 50 years An Occasion For The Arts has brought fabulous art to historic downtown Williamsburg, VA on the 1st weekend of October. Williamsburg is the home of the College of William & Mary with an affluent alumni base residing in the area. It is a growing midsize community with a population of 158,294. It is also a top tourism and retirement destination for people from all over the world.    Our ambition is to be the best show possible for those exhibiting with us, and our commitment is to balance the show so it showcases artists' work as unique and provides the potential for sales. Galerie Zlotowski Eugene J. Martin Exhibition from April 28 to June 30 2023 Galerie Zlotowski is delighted to present in its space on the rue de Seine the first monographic exhibition dedicated to the African-American painter Eugene J. Martin, from 28 April to 30 June 2023.

Martin  As part of its commitment to highlighting 20th century artistic figures, Galerie Zlotowski has launched a major project to rediscover the luminous, surprisingly free and joyful work of Eugene J. Martin.  Among a selection of key works, the exhibition brings together untitled works from the Oval Drawings series (1971-1974), colourful creations inscribed in a detached oval on a white background, which are surprising for being so far removed from the dominant trends of the time.  Another series, called the Bamboo Drawings, is executed on paper with a bamboo calamus (a stylus carved from bamboo) in ink of different colours. With these simple means, the artist expresses an impressive subtlety of features, forms and chromatic shades in the range of greys, blues, ochres and browns. A collection of collages, made in the 1980s and 1990s, includes works with resolutely free, playful geometries and extraordinarily luminous assemblages.  The acrylics on paper produced in the 1990s also presented in the exhibition demonstrate the artist's extreme mastery of constructions, the vibrant palette of his colours and his unpredictable apparitions, on the tenuous, sensitive line between representation and abstraction.

Launch of a new collection of books dedicated to the gallery by Editions Martin de Halleux On the occasion of this exhibition, the gallery and Les Éditions Martin de Halleux have joined forces to launch a new collection of books dedicated to modern art, the avant-gardes of the early 20th century and artists of the second half of the 20th century, following the gallery's exhibitions. Dedicated to the Eugene J. Martin exhibition, the first volume of the collection is a bilingual (French and English), 20x20 cm bound and sewn edition of 72 pages, with over 50 works reproduced. The book, with a preface by Suzanne Fredericq, the artist's widow, is accompanied by a text by Philippe Dagen.

Fremin Gallery is thrilled to announce the opening of "BIOTANY", featuring the works of Panamanian born painter THANNYO DE FREITAS and Ohio based artist LISA MEEK. Meet the artists on Thursday, April 6th at 6pm, drinks sponsored by CASA DEL SOL TEQUILA.

Born in the province of Colón, Panamá in 1976, Thannyo De Freitas Navarro experienced an upbringing in which artistic expression and earthly connection were central. In response to his participation in many artistic competitions throughout adolescence, he was awarded a scholarship to progress academically in Panama City. He obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Panama, specializing in visual arts with a particular focus on drawing and painting. His work is currently exhibited in Panama, New York City, El Salvador, Sao Paulo, and the Dominican Republic.

The contemporary landscapes of Thannyo De Freitas possess qualities that parallel the work of Tomás Sánchez, a Cuban painter widely acknowledged for his modern pastoral depictions. Like Sánchez, Thannyo’s work beholds photographic qualities achieved through sharp detail, the absence of visible brush stroke, and primarily realistic color usage. The ethereal manner in which he portrays nature suggests surrealist undertones. Considering the impactful presence of deforestation in Panama, Thannyo’s depiction of untouched forests and boundless landscapes can be interpreted as a romanticized version of the environment's dire reality.

Lisa Meek’s sculptures, collectively titled Biblio-Botany, possess a duality that is reflective of the artist herself and her eclectic range of interests. As a practicing medical professional with an inherent artistic drive, Lisa Meek has made impactful contributions to those she interacts with in both office and gallery spaces. The polarity of these worlds conglomerates beautifully, manifesting through her notable success in both fields. Lisa’s pursuit of a dermatological career has always been paralleled with a desire to create, to utilize her artistic prowess in order to share her perspective and initiate important conversations.

This desire has been integral to her experience since early adolescence, when she began acting upon her creative drive by depicting nature scenes. The process in which Lisa assembles her sculptures is quite complex. In order to achieve depth and nuance, Lisa employs considerable intention throughout the planning process. With great admiration and ponder, Lisa cuts pages out of various literary works which highlight topics she wishes to discuss, human rights often being central. Attention to detail is vital; certain books possess qualities unsuitable for paint and shape manipulation. Every aspect of her work is deliberate; the symbolism associated with color and flower species, the pairing of literature, the minute details of shape and object placement. This layered production process exemplifies Lisa’s contemplative nature.
