ANNE VIEUX
MIRROR PROXIES

September 6th - October 22nd, 2022

OPENING: Tuesday, September 6th from 6-8 pm at 86 Walker St.

The Hole is proud to announce our forthcoming exhibition of paintings and video by Anne Vieux: MIRROR PROXIES.

For her second solo show with The Hole, Vieux extends and deepens the parameters of her practice, which centers on the longstanding artistic tradition of using tools wrong. She begins each large prismatic canvas by feeding holographic paper into a scanner, confounding the diodes in its CCD array. The resulting images are an explosion of refractions, which she reproduces through a rigorous layering of techniques, including hand-painting winding channels that mimic the effect of Photoshop's "heal" tool. Vieux’s new video work, which fills three walls of the rear gallery, uses animating software to bring movement to the digitally captured gestures that are the foundation of her painted works.

Vieux is careful to alter her machine-generated images with the same logic and precision as the tech she deploys. It’s often impossible to tell which parts of her canvases are hand-rendered and which aren't, which are random and which are deliberate. And that is partially the point: from where we're sitting, at this hallucinatory junction of technology and human virtuosity, it doesn't really matter.

This show comprises the artist's latest strategies for slowing the experience of the virtual while speeding up perception in painted space. It is a challenge, both to the flow of attention as mediated by our devices and to the way we’ve been trained to look at art. Distortions of light, distortions of time: in this body of work, each reveals a spectrum of possibilities.

Anne Vieux (b. 1985, East Lansing, MI) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She received an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Kansas City Art Institute. Her recent shows with The Hole include Bio Tech (2021), Paper View (2019), Post Analog Studio (2019), and Command Field (2018). Other recent exhibitions include Phygital Reality(G Gallery, 2022), The Artist is Online (König Galerie, 2021), Tennis Elbow 73 (The Journal Gallery, 2021), and Unfamiliar Again (Newcomb Art Museum, 2017).

Barry X Ball premiered his NFTs titled Granulo-Specular Chiaroscuro Meta-Morphs (Alchemic Black Steel, Alchemic Gold, Alchemic Silver, Alchemic Copper). The artist is known for his sculptures which utilize cutting edge techniques and materials, all while drawing inspiration from classical reference points. His new NFTs transform a selection of his physical sculptures into 3D digital images with ultra-high surface detail designed to replicate the experience of tactility. The digital pieces utilize LG’s state-of-the-art OLED Evo TVs to accurately reproduce the textures and colors of the precious metals and gemstones comprising their physical sculptural counterparts.

“LG’s truly innovative technology was an integral part of my work, enabling me to explore new possibilities in the digital art space,” said Barry X Ball.

Barry X Ball’s NFTs are the first release and drop on LG Art Lab, LG Electronics’ very own non-fungible token platform (NFT). Accessible directly from the TV’s Home Screen, the new platform enables users to buy, sell, and enjoy high-quality digital artwork in their homes. Delivering outstanding picture quality and offering several large screen sizes to choose from, LG’s state of the art TVs are the ideal medium for exhibiting and enjoying NFTs and digital art works in the home, gallery or museum.

At Frieze Seoul, LG continues its ongoing collaboration with the esteemed British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor. The LG OLED Lounge at Frieze features Kapoor’s first digital work, Wounds and Absent Objects. The 8-minute video captures Kapoor’s exploration of colors—an extension of the artist’s ongoing investigation captured here in advanced video. Inspired by the technological capabilities of the world’s first rollable OLED TV, the LG Signature OLED R, each color in the video makes a soft, perfect transition, repeatedly moving and expanding through a series of deep full hues.

Anish Kapoor stated: “More and more I wanted to make work towards experiences and away from form, in a way that something literally draws you in, that literally gives you a sense of vertigo, disorientation, whatever, so it becomes more and more a physical experience.”

The LG SIGNATURE OLED R Anish Kapoor Edition is also displayed at Frieze Seoul. The exclusive, special-edition model includes Kapoor’s media artwork complete with an artist signed and numbered certificate.

Barry X Ball and Anish Kapoor’s works are displayed on LG OLED Objet Collection models Easel and Posé, LG’s new lifestyle TV models, which utilize millions of self-lit pixels to deliver true color, with an infinite contrast ratio.

LG’s Kate Oh comments: “Both artists are renowned for their thought-provoking sculptures and innovative use of materials. We are thrilled to showcase their unique talents as they explore the expanding possibilities of digital technology in their work using LG OLED as their medium. At Frieze Seoul, LG continues its commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and visual experience — elevating life and art though the self-lit picture quality of its peerless OLED TVs.”

As Global Partner of Frieze, LG continues to provide enriching art experiences around the globe, hosting exclusive exhibitions and events that highlight and explore the intrinsic link and harmony between art and technology. Its OLED ART project continues to produce memorable artist collaborations expanding the definition of art, while providing inspiring new viewer experiences.

The artist’s sculptures, although paying reverent homage to their historical antecedents, are radically new. Through the use of unconventional materials and innovative methods, the artist has reinvigorated the age-old tradition of figurative sculpture. Ball employs an elaborate array of equipment and procedures to realize his works, ranging from the cutting edge to the traditional. With their simultaneous fever-pitch intensity and surreal stillness, Barry X Ball’s bravura works make an expansive case for the reconsideration of contemporary sculptural practice.

Hans Peterson Art shares the news Hans placed 1st in the York County Juried art show.

Hans, and Barbara Peterson, celebrate Wired No. 4 was awarded 1st place in the Arts Council of York County 33rd Juried Competition

Greetings to all of you who expressed an interest in Hans’ art during our many art shows.   We hope that everyone enjoyed a happy and healthy summer.  I have exciting news to share with you. Last week Hans’ painting Wired No. 4 was awarded 1st place in the Arts Council of York County 33rd Juried Competition, which was open to artists everywhere 18 or older.  Suffice it to say Hans’ art continues to belie his age.  He was among the few artists who had multiple pieces in the final show.  It was a great night for both of us, and for the record, the color coordination of our outfits to Wired No.4 was not intentional!

Hans is preparing for a monumental solo show in October at the Jennifer Balcos Gallery in Atlanta.  This is the first time upwards of twenty of Hans’ largest paintings will be showcased in a single space.  The dominant theme is the women of Hans’ surreal imagination selected from multiple collections of his work.

While paintings will always be the core business of Hans Petersen Art, we are entering the world of art accessories with the Hygge Collection of high-quality, fashion tote bags featuring Hans’ bodacious original art. Each is custom printed to order with all the essentials of a great tote bag:

·       Lightweight

·       Fully lined

·       Multiple pockets; one zippered and two slide-in

·       Magnetic closure to secure contents

The response at soft launch events earlier this month was overwhelming enthusiasm for the collection, with many being ordered for personal use and gifts.

Visit the shop page at www.hanspetersenart.com to see the entire collection and maybe get a jump on your holiday shopping.  This is a niche business and online sales are exclusively through the website.  We’d love to hear what you think of the Hygge Collectionand ask you to consider sharing it with others who will appreciate Hans’ brand of abstract art.

Warm regards,
Barbara
