VICKIE VAINIONPÄÄ SOFTWARE May 12 - June 18, 2022 OPENING: Thursday, May 12th from 6-8pm The Hole: Tribeca 86 Walker Street New York, NY, 10013 The Hole is pleased to present Software, the debut solo exhibition of Montreal-based visual artist, Vickie Vainionpää. Starting with a generative computer script and ending as oil on canvas, the work depicts softly textured, organic shapes that fold and twist on themselves to create hyper-real forms reminiscent of microorganisms or intestinal tangles. Software will open May 12th from 6-8pm and remain on view through June 18th at The Hole’s Tribeca location 86 Walker Street.  A continuation of Vainionpää’s “Soft Body Dynamics” series, the paintings in Software feature curvilinear shapes that bend and protrude, twisting into biomorphic forms that are non-representational yet familiar. With cool, fleshy tones and plush texture, these mesmerizing paintings exude a techno-optimism that binds the dual processes of code and paint.  As the show’s title hints, Vainionpää embraces a type of cyborgism by uniting the virtual and the real, and exploring the symbiosis of humans and technology in a body of work that could only have been made through a collaboration between human and machine. Vainionpää’s Software celebrates the remarkable innovation in digital imaging tools and also our imaginations, showing us a glimpse of the amorphous hyper-reality that awaits us in the post-human future. Generated in code and rendered materially in paint, Vainionpää embraces the forward momentum of technology in a world that is, in the words of Alan Watts, “a marvelous system of wiggles.”   The exhibition will also feature the artist’s first immersive video piece mapped across three walls in the back “apse” of the gallery, titled “Dark Mode”. Contrasting Vainionpää’s traditionally light, ethereal, and optimistic style of painting, the video installation plays with colors, textures, and lighting that are moody and nocturnal. Curated by and in partnership with Ink and Movement (IAM), the show opens Saturday, May 14th from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm in the Main Gallery.   I Don’t Wanna Be, I Am is a collective and itinerant exhibition that brings together the work of different artists under one roof. Creators who, despite their distinctive backgrounds and uniquely individual work, share an encompassing creative vision. The exhibition explores the concept of identity within the context of the international art world and is born from the necessity to approach new codes, new spaces, and new interaction methods inside the universe of contemporary creation without hesitation. The result is an exhibition that is open to multiple interpretations and for all audiences, offering the opportunity to contemplate individual and collective creative identities. The show also has a social objective: a percentage of the sales obtained in this exhibition will be used to fund the activities of Coloring the World Foundation, whose mission is to promote a diverse and inclusive society through art and color. I Don’t Wanna Be, I Am debuted in Hamburg, Germany (Sept. ‘21), followed by Miami, Florida (Dec. ’21) and Lisbon, Portugal (Mar. ’22). Highlights Virginia’s Middle Peninsula Selected as NOAA Habitat Focus Area NOAA has announced the Middle Peninsula, an area on Virginia’s Western Shore, as the eleventh NOAA Habitat Focus Area. The area provides important habitat for economically and ecologically important fish and wildlife, but it is experiencing significant effects from climate change. NOAA and partners will focus on restoring and conserving fish habitat, assessing the economic effects of restored and existing habitats, enhancing coastal resilience, building regional restoration and resilience capacity, and engaging communities in NOAA science. NOAA Habitat Focus Areas are places where NOAA brings partners and communities together to work on mutual habitat conservation goals. Contact: Andrew Larkin. NOAA’s Largest Wetland Restoration Project Underway in Louisiana NOAA and partners recently began construction on a massive 1,200 acre marsh creation project in Louisiana’s Barataria Basin. The $151 million project will create habitat, reduce erosion, and protect communities. This will be NOAA’s largest wetland restoration project. The project was approved by the Deepwater Horizon Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group to restore habitats impacted by the 2010 oil spill.  Contact: Mel Landry. Researchers Find Massive Rare Sponge Mounds Hiding in the Deep Sea NOAA scientists and collaborators have found rare deep-sea sponge mounds between two of California’s most explored marine protected areas, within the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. This discovery and subsequent research is helping scientists understand more about the life cycles of deep-sea sponges and to determine which fish species are associated with them—work that is contributing to ecosystem-based fisheries management. Oyster Restoration in the Chesapeake Bay Tops 1,220 Acres Partners working to restore healthy oyster reef habitat in the Chesapeake Bay recently released a report with compiled statistics through the end of 2021. To date, 1,220 acres have been restored out of the 1,770 acres targeted for restoration toward the Chesapeake Bay Program’s goal to restore oysters in 10 tributaries by 2025. Contact: Stephanie Westby. $1.1 Million Proposed for Salmon Habitat Restoration in Clear Creek, Washington The Commencement Bay Trustee Council released a draft restoration plan proposing to spend $1.1 million to implement two habitat restoration projects on Clear Creek, in Pierce County, Washington. If approved, the projects would restore fish passage and improve wetland habitat for salmon, steelhead, birds, and other fish and wildlife in the area. Habitat Across NOAA NOAA Fisheries Invites Public Comment on New Draft Equity and Environmental Justice Strategy NOAA Fisheries shared its first-ever draft Equity and Environmental Justice Strategy and invited public comments through August 19. In addition to accepting written comments, we will host four webinars on the strategy, where comments will be accepted. Additional in-person meetings and opportunities to comment via phone will be announced on a rolling basis, once those plans are finalized. A Better Chance for Resilience: Using Hungry Fish to Conserve Coral Reefs NOAA Fisheries scientist Tye Kindinger explains how identifying the best algae-grazing fish in the Pacific region can help fight against algae overgrowth and promote recovery of distressed coral reefs. She works in NOAA Fisheries’ Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center and researches how reef fish help protect corals from the adverse effects of climate change. NOAA’s “Green” Expertise Meets New Infrastructure Era The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act contains $2.96 billion over five years in future NOAA investments to advance “climate smart, climate ready, and climate resilient” infrastructure. Much of this funding will be passed to the state coastal zone management programs and research reserves for projects such as wetland restoration in Texas, planting marsh grass in New Hampshire, and rebuilding dunes in Washington. Lessons learned from these projects will provide value, insight, and preparation for future projects.

Honored to participate in Voices of Angles, the art show and fundraiser which was created to bring the community together and open a dialog about the problem of rising numbers of suicides.  This show will support Mental Wellness Network Alliance - the organization that serves the community of Coral Springs and all of South Florida.  The mission of the MWNA is to share education about suicide prevention and break the stigma of mental health challenges through advocacy and respectful dialogue.
