Henry and Henrietta brought a dozen eggs
from the tree bearing strange fruits
Now why does this tree have eggs not
blossoms
Henrietta bounced like a floppy
flower in heat
Down the road by the flat green wet shape
They cracked one by one each egg into a
Sun spot hotter than July
We are so famished
The milky egg spun much potential
Henrietta bounced and bounced
The year two women gave birth to a small
man

Happy Summer!  It's the middle of summer and we have lots of upcoming workshops and events to keep you cool and creative.

New Art League instructors David Peikon, Bart DeCeglie, Anne B. Gunthner, William Graf and Mark A. Fay have joined the roster of our outstanding faculty and will be teaching landscape painting, studio oil painting, "realistic" drawing and painting, "real life" illustration for promotional materials, and pastels respectively.  You may have met William Graf back in June at Art in the Park, demonstrating his illustration techniques in the Art League's main tent.  William, along with his colleagues Denis Ponsot and David Miller, were kind enough to donate their time at the fair.  Many thanks to these instructors for making the effort to help make the fair a success.

Coming up in August is a summer series of Professional Development Workshops for Artists.  Ashley Werter's How To Photograph your Artwork takes place August 2, Debbie Wells' The Artist's Self-Promotion Checklist takes place August 6, and the last summer workshop by Sue Allen Clayton is How to Write an Artist Statement on August 22.  More information is below.

Summer Art Adventure and Summer Portfolio are well under way.  Check in on our facebook page for photos of the happy campers.  Some upcoming sessions still have openings, so if you would like to sign up your child for any remaining sessions you can still do so.

Bill Mittler's exhibit Curved Lines opens on Saturday, the 18th!  Be sure to come to the gallery to view the dramatic presentation of his large-scale abstract works on view until August 2.

Browse through our virtual catalog - with more than 70 workshops happening between now and the end of August you are bound to find something that fills your creative craving!

Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/123054788029928/

KRISTINE SCHOMAKER is a new media and performance artist, painter and art historian living and working at the Brewery artist complex in Los Angeles California. She received her BA in Art History and her MA in Studio Art from California State University at Northridge. Kristine works with various interdisciplinary art forms including online virtual worlds to explore notions of online identity and the hybridization of digital media with the physical world.

Whether physical or virtual, the object-based work Kristine creates combines elements of color-based gestural abstraction, animation, pattern and design, neo-Baroque and Populence. Using installation, text, photography, mixed media, video and performance for her ongoing conceptual project My Life as an Avatar, she visualizes a narrative/dialogue with her virtual persona, Gracie Kendal.

In early 2012, Kristine turned an art gallery into a re-creation of Gertrude Stein’s salon and held a mixed reality performance/dinner party at the opening. Over the summer she also performed “The Bald and the Beautiful” in which she had her head shaved as a statement to challenge society’s standards of beauty.

“A comfortable Skin,” Kristine’s latest work is an ongoing multimedia project that documents how she uses virtual and physical avatars to bring more attention to the obsession society has with physical appearance.

She has an active life in the arts, previously teaching art history at Antelope Valley College and Pasadena City College, forming an artist collective in Los Angeles and organizing and curating numerous art exhibitions. A member of the Los Angeles Art Association, Southern California Women's Caucus for Art, College Art Association and Siggraph, Kristine believes in supporting artists by building communities of like-minded people who have plans, can share resources and bring ideas to fruition. Kristine is currently the social media coordinator of the Los Angeles Art Association and PR rep, social media and advertising manager of the Brewery Artwalk Association.

Train Hopping: Looks like art is a changing, this one is fun

Chandran Gallery Presents
NBD
Solo Exhibition and Book Release by Swampy
Enigmatic Artist Resurfaces With Images Documenting A Year Train Hopping Across the Continent
on the North American Criminal Roller Coaster
(l) Safe In My Cave  and (r)  Aguascalientes, 2015
Chromogenic color print, edition of 10, 30 x 30 in.

Exhibition Dates: July 25 - Aug 08, 2015
Opening Reception: Sat, July 25, 2015 - 7-10pm

SAN FRANCISCO — July 16, 2015 — Chandran Gallery is pleased to present NBD, a solo exhibition and book release by Oakland-based artist, Swampy. The exhibition is comprised of select images from the book presented in large-scale, 30”x30”, c-prints, each in an edition of 10. A screening of  Swampy’s video diary on his summer travels will be shown at the opening reception. The exhibition is on view July 25 to August 08, 2015 with an opening reception on Saturday, July 25 from 7 - 10pm.  The artist will be in attendance.

NBD is a collection of photographs detailing the artist’s travels, primarily train hopping, across North America from Mexico to Alaska during the fall of 2010 to the summer of 2011. The images take us inside the hobo culture that treads the line of fugitive and idyllic. Traditionally, train hoppers leave their mark denoting the direction they are headed, for instance EBD for eastbound or BW for westbound. Swampy’s tag was NBD for his northbound journey.

Cited as one of the most influential graffiti artists today, Swampy strikes a marked departure from his prolific street work with NBD. The images show us quiet observations of the communities, strangers and provocateurs that the artist encounters in his travels. As the images take us across the continent, we see the underbelly of a transient culture while also encountering the sublime landscapes and adventure in which the tracks take them. In the book’s introduction Swampy tells us:

The allure of traveling by train initially came from the absence of a price tag, but the sense of solitude that I discovered once I started riding is why I continue a decade later. The railway strikes out a different path across the landscape than roads and highways, and there is a calm to the environment surrounding the tracks.

Swampy is an elusive artist with a preference for anonymity. Even so, he has developed a cult following that is fascinated by his multidimensional work as much as by his enigmatic identity. “I like disappearing”, a phrase often peppering his work, is a regular practice for the artist. Following Swampy’s 2011 sold-out debut solo show at FIFTY24SF Gallery, the artist vanished off the grid. In his sporadic resurfacings, the artist has collaborated with Paper Monster and has been featured in The New York Times T Magazine, Complex, Juxtapoz and The San Francisco Chronicle.
