5th Anniversary Exhibition | LIGHT FANTASTIC | 14th –18th Oct 2014

House of the Nobleman is delighted to announce that it will be celebrating its 5th annual exhibition, during Frieze week and PAD (Pavilion of Art & Design), with a major display of Light Art at 12 Hay Hill in London’s Mayfair. Curated by House of the Nobleman director, Victoria Golembiovskaya, LIGHT FANTASTIC will be a dazzling presentation of art works by leading artists of the genre as well as new work by some of today’s most exciting artists, including Conrad Shawcross, Cerith Wyn Evans, Troika, Random International and Tim Noble & Sue Webster.

Throughout history, artists have been fascinated by light, its nature, behavior and transformative qualities, but only in the last few decades, assisted by vast technological developments, has it become a medium for art. Capturing the tangible and sensory nature of this natural force, light technology has allowed for the creation of a new, dynamic genre that has the ability to challenge our perceptions, stimulating wonder and serene contemplation.

Victoria Golembiovskaya comments: “We are delighted to bring together such a diverse group of inspirational artists and works which truly embrace the immersive and interactive nature of this exciting and dynamic art form.  Presenting established names and works alongside fresh contributors to the contemporary art scene, LIGHT FANTASTIC illustrates the continual evolution and adaptation of technology to produce relevant, inspirational and thought-provoking works of art.”

The project will also be showcasing a new interactive light technology in collaboration with the Lighting Design Collective and will be accompanied by a program of talks, events and performances.

Exhibition Dates: Tuesday 14th – Saturday 18th October 2014
Viewing Daily: 12 - 9 pm
Address: 12 Hay Hill, London W1J 8NR

Radient Sconce

There is great power in line. Consider how frequently you use the pen to paper gesture, how relevant it is to the structures we exist in and how one of its early expressions, Sacred Geometry, gave birth to a number of Rich Brilliant Willing designs.

We gather numerous aesthetic and conceptual influences, however the one that stands out the most is this form of mathematics, used to understand patterns in nature. A form whose visual language speaks of circles, triangles, diamonds and squares.

Radient Sconce (drawing pictured above), best reflects this sacred inspiration with its circular wooden disc and cylindrical inner stem. A geometric conversation of the highest order.

Leaves from Four Tales from the Arabian Nights by Marc Chagall, New York: Pantheon Books, 1948
Est. $300,000 - $500,000

New York – Bonhams is pleased to present the Gemini Collection of Modern Prints & Illustrated Books, at auction onOctober 28 in New York. The sale comprises 166 lots and is anticipated to fetch $1-1.5 million.
Gemini Fine Books & Arts was founded by the late Alexander “Arik” Verezhensky. Mr Verezhensky was a Russianemigré and cybernetics PhD. In the U.S. he became a passionate collector and dealer of fine prints and illustrated books by the major artists of the 20th century. He joined both the ABAA and ILAB, the two foremost trade organizations for fine books. Christina Geiger, Director of the Books Department at Bonhams New York, states, “Mr.Verezhensky was widely respected by his colleagues and by auctioneers. He had exceptional discipline in acquiring books and prints in only the best possible condition.”
The star lot is one of Marc Chagall’s most important illustrated books, Four Tales from the Arabian Nights, estimated at $300,000 – 500,000, published by Pantheon Books in New York in 1948. After the death of his wife, Bella, in 1944, Chagall began to focus his work on the themes of lost love, death, and reunion. When asked by his colleague, Jacques Schiffrin, to collaborate with him on an illustrated book to be printed in the United States, Chagall found himself deeply drawn to the imagery from the Arabian Nights. The complete set of 12 color lithographs on woven paper has been called the finest example of color lithography produced in the United States prior to 1950. The Gemini copy is in superb condition with fresh colors and pristine sheets. It is also unique, including a set of 23 color progressive proofs.
Also featured is a signed, limited edition illustrated book, Ã€ toute Ã©preuve by Joan Miró (est. $35,000 – 55,000) with poems by Paul Eluard and published in 1958. It is an exceptional feat of book illustration, which took Miró 10 years to create. Miró himself wrote of the project, "I have made some trials which have allowed me to see what it was to make a book and not merely to illustrate it. Illustration is always a secondary matter. The important thing is that a book must have all the dignity of a sculpture carved in marble."
Pablo Picasso’s first major illustrated book, Ovid’s Métamorphoses, estimated at $35,000 – 55,000 and published in 1931 in Lausanne, Switzerland by Albert Skira is another highlight of this sale. The book is illustrated with 30 original etchings by Picasso plus an additional suite printed on chine paper, one of only 10 such suites. This work was Picasso’s first serious attempt to provide an alternate vision of a text and is a superb example of his virile and classical graphic line in this period.
The catalog is now available online at www.bonhams.com/22593.

October 7 - 11, 2014

STATION presents Helvetic Zebra, an interdisciplinary group exhibition featuring contemporary artists from Switzerland, Lebanon, Turkey and Morocco.

The exhibition takes as point of departure the richness of Lebanon’s polyglot culture as a common and inspiring thread shared with Switzerland, a country characterized by its cultural diversity and political neutrality. The artworks challenge the limits and overlaps of visual, audio, textual, figurative and abstract languages. Starting with The Most Beautiful Swiss Books design award, Helvetic Zebra extends into hybrid forms of artistic languages, drawing connections between Latin typography and Arabic calligraphy, radio art, cinematic and optical art, graphic design and music. All these formats and their materiality will recall, reiterate and play with different artistic movements and traditions often associated with Switzerland, such as constructivism, surrealism, Dada and design.

Rockville Town Square - is a sensory delight. A popular dining and gathering place, Rockville Town Square covers four city blocks and features more than 30 fine shops, upscale boutiques, unique restaurants. Low-rise retail and modern residential buildings create a very pleasing, human-scale, town-center feel. The architecture is eclectic, ranging from art deco to southwest to postmodern in style.  Attractive brick sidewalks, wooden and wrought-iron benches, trees and shrubbery round out the welcoming atmosphere.

Cultural events are an important dynamic in this affluent community on the Rockville Pike corridor, which has the nation's highest per square foot retail sales.

Marketing through newspapers, magazines, television, radio, web and transit is directed to these individuals with high disposable income and interest in art.

Now in its third year, A-RTS at Rockville Town Square promises to continue offering artists an excellent clientele in a spectacular setting!

Benjamin: The Late Paintings' at Louis Stern Fine Arts

Benjamin: The Late Paintings' at Karl Benjamin

Karl Benjamin: The Late Paintings is all about discovery. Fun figures into the sharply focused show, as does delight, surprise and wonder.

At Louis Stern Fine Arts, the first exhibition of Benjamin's works since he died two years ago at 86, shows a lover of color at the height of his powers: slamming together slender, neon-tinted triangles with weird wedges of cinnamon brown, bruised maroon and delicate gray to make paintings with madcap palettes that sound gross but look great.

Vision, not logic, mattered to Benjamin, and his 12 late paintings bring his purposeful wackiness to viewers so generously and deliciously and joyously that you can’t help but feel as if this show is a gift.

It’s set up perfectly. The five paintings in the first gallery, painted from 1986 to 1989, show Benjamin balancing color and structure, sometimes packing super-saturated slabs and slices into jigsaw compositions and at others laying out asymmetrical wedges of color as if each were a panel of a folding screen or the flexible folds of an accordion.
Composition takes a back seat to color in the three paintings in the middle gallery, all from 1994. Each is a grid: a five-by-five arrangement of equally sized rectangles of some of the strangest colors Benjamin has ever cooked up: freakish pastels, quirky tertiaries and all manner of uncanny grays, beiges and mauves.

Benjamin stopped painting in 1995 because his health was failing and because he had satisfied his desire to come up with compositions that would make color sing.
That’s what happens in the four paintings in the last gallery, where a lifetime of looking carefully, thinking clearly and then letting color rip pays off in spades. You can look at these electrifying paintings forever and always see something different.

Louis Stern Fine Arts, 9002 Melrose Ave., (310) 276-0147, through Oct. 25. Closed Sundays and Mondays.
