September 4-7, 2014

August 22, 2014
 – Houston, TX – Art Market Productions is excited to announce the return of the Texas Contemporary Art Fair for its fourth year at Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center from September 4 – 7, 2014.

This year's fair will continue to bring the best in contemporary and modern art by Texas-based galleries, as well as visiting galleries from around the country. In addition to the world-class art on display, we are delighted to introduce new partnerships that will make this year's fair an enhanced artistic and collecting experience.

Texas Contemporary is pleased to announce our continued partnership with the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH) as the 2014 beneficiary of the Opening Night Preview event. This year, to the pleasure of gallerists and art enthusiasts alike, CAMH board members J.B. FairbanksWilliam GoldbergYvette & Scott Hill and Judie Oudt will serve as honorary chairs of the Opening Night Preview event. Last year this event garnered $25,000 for the museum.

Drawing on their market knowledge, the success of their Miami Project 2013 and their network of national resources and advisors, Art Market Productions’ founders Max Fishko and Jeffrey Wainhause are thrilled contribute to Texas’ growing art culture with Texas Contemporary’s return to Houston. We hope that Texas Contemporary’s return will once again help ignite interest from both active and new collectors. This year’s exciting range of galleries include Texas’ Inman Gallery, Barbara Davis Gallery, Moody Gallery, McClain Gallery, Devin Borden Gallery, David Shelton Gallery, Art Palace, Gallery Sonja Roesch, Zoya Tommy Contemporary and THE MISSION. New York's Morgan Lehman, Mixed Greens, Fredericks & Freiser, Other Criteria and the veteran ACA Gallery will exhibit alongside West Coast galleries like Catharine Clark Gallery,Rosamund Felsen Gallery, Kopeikin Gallery and Edward Cella Art + Architecture. We are proud to showcase a solo presentation of 2014 MFAH Core Fellow artist Rodrigo Valenzuela, presented by Portland's Upfor Gallery, as well as a special presentation of the work of Dan Tague by Jonathan Ferrara Gallery.

As always, our cultural partners are an essential part of our fair programming. This year Houston’s own FotoFestwill showcase works in their curated booth. CAMH curator Dean Daderko will collaborate with artists Debra BarreraNathaniel Donnett, and Carrie Marie Schneider to curate their space. For the past three years, Rice University Art Gallery has put together an exciting booth and we look forward to seeing what they will bring to this year’s show. Having these partners exhibit alongside our art dealers is part of what makes Texas Contemporary a uniquely Houston event.

We are very excited to showcase a full schedule of curated programs and events throughout the duration of the fair. Texas Contemporary will feature a timely series of presentations created in collaboration with our participating galleries, artists and cultural partners. Curated by Houston’s own Glasstire Magazine, the lecture series will feature a conversation with Hugh Forrest, Director of South by Southwest Interactive Festival and a discussion on the Art of Design with Ligne Roset VP Antoine Roset.

VIP guests will be welcomed to Texas Contemporary with a lounge designed by MaRS, Mayfield and Ragni Studio and furnished by Ligne Roset. We are thrilled to have MaRS bring a visionary, exciting and exclusive design to the VIP lounge for its fourth year in a row. We are grateful to our sponsors, The Wall Street Journaland Perrier for helping us create the most exciting and visible event possible for the Houston market. Both organizations are widely known for their commitments and outreach to the artistic community. We are extremely pleased to count them among our sponsors.

Our VIP event series will begin with a kickoff party on Wednesday, September 3rd at the CAMH and is sponsored by Kinzelman Art Consulting. Kinzelman Art Consulting has been an integral part of the success ofTexas Contemporary since its conception. It will be followed by a Friday-night bash at the stunning estate ofLucinda and Javier Loya and a Saturday night cocktail reception at the home of Houston collector Marc Melcher. We will also offer an exclusive opportunity to view the Turrell Skyspace at sunset, as well as a number of private tours and receptions at some of Houston’s most important art collections.

LUIS GONZÁLEZ PALMA RETROSPECTIVE OPENS INAUGURAL SEASON OF LISA SETTE GALLERY MIDTOWN

Luis Gonzalez Palma
Luis González Palma
An Intimate Complicity: Luis González Palma’s 20 Years of Looking Beyond

Exhibit
October 18 - December 31, 2014

Opening Reception
Saturday October 18th from 7:00-9:00pm
I am deeply interested in how images are articulated in our minds, as what we call reality. My works are an interpretation of that reality, a reality full of stories, memories, crossed paths... They are remnants, left over from a fragmented world and dreamed into being.
—Luis González Palma

Lisa Sette Gallery is proud to present a 20 year retrospective of the works of Luis González Palma commemorating the season opening of the gallery’s expansive new space, and its recently-announced exclusive North American representation of González Palma.
A Guatamalan photographer who has been exhibiting internationally for nearly three decades, González Palma’s photo-collaged portraits superimpose Latin American and European spiritual and artistic traditions, and mine the complex relationship between the observer and observed in contemporary photography.
González Palma employs a range of exotic photographic techniques to achieve his works’ startling, aqueous effect: gelatin silver processing, gold leaf and resin inclusions, Kodalith prints, or, in recent works, inserting stark blades of acrylic paint that cleave the images’ otherwise serene aspects. González Palma is known for leaving true the whites of his models eyes, which glint eerily from a sea of dusky sepia.
Many of González Palma’s works are portraits of performers who are of Mayan descent, as is the artist himself. They peer out at the viewer with a frank, numinous, and strangely impassive mien, foregrounded against a constellation of symbol and metaphor—an Elizabethan ruff, for example, or a set of statuary wings. González Palma’s intention is to create a subconscious connection between model, artist and viewer, bringing each together in the fraught, sensuous moment of looking:
I think the photographer does not give dignity to the models, but dignity exists within them, and the photographer can become a link, allowing for a complex relationship between the model image (not the model) and the public. There’s a great collaboration, an intimate complicity, between photographer and model—it is necessary to generate an intensity that is not seen but rather “felt” in the image.
Möbius, González Palma’s latest body of work, juxtaposes the early 1900’s concretist/rationalist movement in Latin American art with the midcentury streak of intense nostalgia—also known as magical realism. To do so, González Palma intersects his romantic, sepia-toned portraits with striking geometrical arrangements in primary acrylics.
My aim with “Möbius” is to create works that allow for a new dialogue between my photographs, usually portraits loaded with emotion and subjective intensity, with abstract geometric painting elements referencing Latin American concretism… providing a rereading of the visual history of ideas from this side of the world, from its history and its contradictions.
Staged in Lisa Sette Gallery’s stunning new Al Beadle-designed desert-modernist space, a subterranean gem in midtown Phoenix, and echoing some of the gallery’s ongoing concerns with the timeless aesthetics of emotion, romance and danger as they are experienced in contemporary life, An Intimate Complicity promises to be a fitting fall-season inauguration of the gallery’s impressive new location, and an unflinching plunge into the dreams and history of the New World.

To request high resolution images, please contact us at (480) 990-7342 or use the email Ashley Rice at sette@lisasettegallery.com.
Throughout three trailblazing decades, Lisa Sette has remained committed to discovering and exposing original, intriguing forms of expression. Lisa Sette Gallery exhibits painting, sculpture, photography, installation and performance pieces from an impressive roster of emerging and established artists, as well as maintaining a clientele of local and international collectors devoted to its founder’s adventurous curatorial vision.

Fujiko Nakaya: Veil
Closing November 30, 2014

Coinciding with the 65th anniversary of the Glass House and the 2014 tour season, the Glass House presents Fujiko Nakaya: Veil, the first site-specific artist project to engage the iconic Glass House itself, designed by Philip Johnson and completed in 1949. Veil stages a potent dialogue with the Glass House, producing an opaque atmosphere to meet the building's extreme transparency and temporal effects that complement its timelessness.
