Spotlight:
Vincent Giarrano

Giarrano_installation
Gallery Henoch has the pleasure of representing two artists that have been accepted into the BP Portrait Competition in two consecutive years, most recently with David Kassan, and last year with Vincent Giarrano. We are proud to exhibit artists who routinely place in prestigious shows.

Giarrano was selected for his documentation of young life. Through his paintings he exhibits a unique combination of the posh-pedestrian.  We view his style concerned subjects primarily in SoHo street vistas and occasionally follow them into somewhat tumbled down one-bedroom set-ups.  Its an intriguing combination that makes you think about ones own street personality.  And in that thought we believe the sense of the city becomes especially mesmerizing.
A collection of works by Vincent Giarrano are now included
in our summer group show: THEM PRETTY PAINTINGS, featuring 22 painters
.

Join us for extended hours next Thursday, July 24 from 6 - 8 pm.

Susan Goldsmith
Exhibition Preview

Susan Goldsmith's New York debut will kick off the autumn season with an opening the first week of September.  This will be the artist's first solo exhibition with Gallery Henoch.  Four pieces are now available to preview including Aphrodite's Gate, pictured below.

In her tightly cropped compositions, Goldsmith presents us with glimpses of nature that she often presents as triptychs & diptychs.  Goldsmith's gilt panels of silver and gold leaf resonate light throughout each complexly layered resin composition, creating a selection of work that takes every advantage of a color's vibrancy.

Please contact the gallery for information on Aphrodite's Gate or to be placed on the preview list for the exhibition:

Chris Armstrong's new painting, White Wash, proves that Armstrong is the master of the crashing wave. White Wash captures the wild energy of these crashing ocean waves, transmitting the felt sensation of ocean mist on the face on a bright, windy day.

Patricia Traub

We are in the final few weeks of the Spring Group Show and are pleased to announce the addition of a new painting by Patricia Traub.  CAPTIVE GEOFFREY'S MARMOSETS, depicts two marmoset monkeys perched on a shallow pedestal against an infinite black ground, a signature feature for her compositions. Rarely growing larger then 8", these particular marmosets are rendered nearly life size.

In anticipation of Alexandra Pacula's forthcoming solo show, her new painting, Soaring Empire, is now on view. Pacula's first solo show at Gallery Henoch will open October 2nd, 2014.

Polish-born, New York-based artist Alexandra Pacula (b. 1979) paints large-scale works exploring the dynamic energy of cities at night. Pacula investigates a world of visual intoxication employing virtuosic brushwork, vibrant color, and fluid gestures all simulating the turbulence of the nocturnal urban environment. Pacula's unique lexicon of mark-making combines techniques from impressionism, expressionism and photorealism. The resulting compositions vividly convey the exhilaration of a nightly excursion.

Pacula's work has been exhibited throughout the United States as well as Russia, Spain, London, and Paris. In 2010, she was the recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts Painting Fellowship, as well as a one-year residency at the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation, sponsored by the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation. In 2008 Pacula won the Saatchi Showdown Competition. Pacula received her MFA at Montclair State University in 2006 and her BFA from Rutgers in 2002.

GRAHAM GILLMORE

GRAHAM GILLMORE                                                                              Graham Gillmore, represented by Dorfman Projects, is a Canadian painter, born in 1963, best known for his vitriolic use of text as an art form within edgy and often provocative work.

Strike Out On Your Own

SIEBREN VERSTEEG

The below works by Siebren Versteeg, represented by Dorfman Projects are digital and displayed on a computer moniter.  They are designed to change automatically throughout the day. What you see below are two different days, dates and times, the image of the day's New York Times News Paper and a painting that morphs on the top of the newspaper throughout the day.

MIA FEUER

Mia Feuer was born in Winnipeg, Canada in 1981 and received her MFA in sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Her sculptures and installations are inspired by divergent events such as actual political events occurring in the West Bank, an imagined traffic jam lining an evacuation route from Washington, D.C., and visions of a snow-covered iron truss bridge in Winnipeg, Canada. Mia Feuer is represented by Dorfman Projects.

José Rodolfo Loaiza Ontiveros Profanity Pop

LA LUZ DE JESUS GALLERY
Soap Plant / Wacko
4633 Hollywood Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90027

José Rodolfo Loaiza Ontiveros
Profanity Pop

August 1 - 31, 2014
Artist reception:
Friday, August 1st; 8-11 PM

José Rodolfo Loaiza Ontiveros is back-with
Profanity Pop, a celebration of creative freedom in our time.
Mythology, Religion and the representation of power have manifested in all of the great works from antiquity. With Profanity Pop, Rodolfo pays tribute to specific historical works that have inspired many generations. Universal themes are once again narrated by beloved animated characters, but in the guise of the divine and with all the fragility of martyrs. Away from the paradise of happy endings, the pastel sprinkled drama takes on a vulnerability that juxtaposes subversively with situations never similarly interpreted.
The Monarchy of prejudices and taboos crumble in this story. The disenfranchised reach beyond discrimination, and in this narrative no union is sinful or suppressed.
The absorbing worlds of entertainment, fashion, and excesses, with the magic of kitsch, invite us to desecrate the seductive world of POP.
The Laluzapalooza Jury Winners
August 1 - 31, 2014
Artist reception:
Friday, August 1st; 8-11 PM

On August 1, new works by the winners of La Luz de Jesus Gallery's 2014Laluzapalooza juried group show will be featured in a five-person show along with José Rodolfo Loaiza Ontiveros' Profanity Pop . Click images to enlarge.
Allison 'Hueman' Torneros
Fresh from the cover of LA Weekly's People 2014 issue, Allison Torneros, aka Hueman, has already had a very busy year: a massive solo show at Project Gallery, multiple mural commissions, video profiles, and endorsement gigs...This is Allison's first feature exhibition at La Luz de Jesus.
Jinx
Jinx has been in a few La Luz de Jesus group shows, and the response they recieved from her work in Laluzapalooza made her an easy choice to bring back for this expanded feature. Jinx's art tends toward the dark, but her subject, skulls and bones, mostly, don't seem to have succumbed to the darkness just yet. In fact, they often seem quite jovial in contrast to their advanced states of, well, no longer living. She's a talented painter and vivacious presence, and La Luz de Jesus is proud to be showcasing both.
Katherine Brannock
Over the past few years, Katherine Brannock has been making quite a name for herself in San Diego. At Comicon, she captured the attention of French publisher, Xupuy, who released a hardcover collection of her sketchbook work last year. She's since apprenticed as a tattooist and created a labyrinthine body of work that utilizes the colors and totems of that profession in a way that only Katherine could.
While huge fans of both bodies of work, the sketches really won La Luz de Jesus over and they offered her the opportunity to expand upon the themes present in her book (which she'll be signing at the opening reception).

Frank Forte
If Tex Avery and Salvador Dali had birthed a child at Fleisher Studios, it might have heralded the arrival of Frank Forte. Frank is an animator by trade and an independent comic book publisher by choice. His quirky sensibilities are funneled through an encyclopedic knowledge of humor illustration that is tributary but also entirely unique. This is Frank Forte's first feature exhibition at La Luz de Jesus.
Sean Stepanoff
Sean Stepanoff has worked in animation, frequently DJ's and even hired David Choe back in the day to work on one of his fanzines. If you've been to Zinefest in the last few years, you've probably seen Sean's brilliant caricature work, which is also frequently on display in the aisles of Wacko.
This exhibition is a collection of Sean's take on the popular Ghanaian barbershop sign motif. His acerbic wit is evident in the skewering of hipster culture visible in each and every painting.
