Expose Practice: Gabriel Stoian

Expose Practice: Gabriel Stoian

Joi, 19 Iunie 2014, 19.00

Artist Talk - @ PAVILION | proudly supported by UniCredit Țiriac Bank
C.A. Rosetti 36 (intrare din Str. Jean Louis Calderon)

Thursday, 19 June 2014, 19.00

Artist Talk - @ PAVILION | proudly supported by UniCredit Țiriac Bank
C.A. Rosetti 36 (entrance from Jean Louis Calderon Street)

Expose Practice is a weekly series of talks in Pavilion – center for contemporary art & culture by the artists which are participants in Bucharest Biennale 6 and present in Bucharest. The talks invite the speakers to discuss their practice, research methodologies and thinking in an informal setting.

”Although I studied for a long time in Cluj, I believe that I don’t have a lot in common with the so-called “School of Cluj”. I’m more of an autodidact and not so fond of being affiliated to different institutions or places. I have always enjoyed a nomadic existence, working from location to location. My ideas require new backdrops and starting points and this cannot be found in the same place all the time”. (Gabriel Stoian)

The series is generated by the curator of Bucharest Biennale 6, Gergő Horváth.

The talks will be held in Romanian.

Gabriel Stoian is an emerging conceptual artist/activist – not in the sense of being under the illusion that his art will change the world directly or immediately; but more because his work is built as a subversive, ironical and critical reaction towards the instruments of power and its symbols. His practice is based on different mediums such as: public interventions, installation, assemblage, object, conceptual writing and a few others that he does not know how to define exactly. He graduated a M.A. in the graphics department at the “University of Art and Design” from Cluj-Napoca in 2010 and thereafter he was selected as a resident artist with the “Hŕbitat Artístic Castelló” – Cultural Center of Castellón de la Plana, Spain – where he developed and exhibited a personal project during 2011. He is currently undergoing his PHD with t he same University of Arts in Cluj.  Currently, he lives and works in Bucharest and finds it very enjoyable.

CHROMA FIT’s Master of Fine Arts in Illustration Exhibition The Museum at FIT

CHROMA
FIT’s Master of Fine Arts in Illustration Exhibition
The Museum at FIT
On View Through July 5, 2014
The nine illustrators whose work comprises CHROMA, an exhibition on view through July 5 at The Museum at FIT, are bound together by more than their love of art. As a group, they are inspired by the world around them in a way that allows them to create. From Trinidadian folk tales and the Triangle Shirtwaist fire of 1911 to stories exploring gender and race, amusement parks, cats, and even a dog that goes to Hollywood, the exhibition’s collages, digital paintings, e-books, animation, set designs, and graphic novels express diverse, often personal stories coming to vibrant life. These illustrators are also bound by the fact that all are 2014 graduates of the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Master of Fine Arts program in Illustration.

Sam Kalda, The Writer’s Room,                                          Jennifer Merz, The Asch Building
Digital and Pencil                                                             on Fire (detail), Hand-crafted collage

The exhibition’s title is derived from the ancient Greek word for color, and in its contemporary usage, refers to the purity of a color, or its intensity and freedom from white or gray. But these illustrators have something else in mind beyond these literal meanings of the word. They use chroma as a description of their whole class — a diverse group with a wide range of cultural backgrounds as far-reaching as South Korea, Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos, the Middle East, the West Coast, and even nearby New Jersey.
“The very mention of the term chroma brings to mind color, brightness, and intensity, and so, it is not hard to see why this graduating class gravitated so aptly to naming this show,” said Melanie Reim, chair, Master of Fine Arts in Illustration program. “This is a group of students who have brought brightness and intensity to FIT and to our classrooms. They are full of life and levity, and it is with great pride that we celebrate their studies and the unique artistic voices that have evolved over the last three years.”
The Illustration program at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) blends tradition with technology, offering instruction on creating hand-drawn and computer-generated images. Hands-on classes are taught by practicing illustrators to help students gain the artistic skills and the technical expertise to create illustrations that inform, inspire, and influence. Unique to the Illustration program at FIT is its nine-course selection of state-of-the-art computer classes, and the option to specialize in either fashion or general illustration. FIT Illustration students have won more than 50 awards in recent years in highly competitive student art exhibitions, including the prestigious Society of Illustrators’ Annual Scholarship Competition. FIT faculty members show their work in museums and galleries all over the world. Noted program alumni include Jennifer Caban and John Leavitt, founders of Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School.
FIT is a leader in career education in art, design, business, and technology, with a wide range of programs that are affordable and relevant to today’s rapidly changing industries. Part of the State University of New York, the college offers nearly 50 majors leading to the AAS, BFA, BS, MA, MFA, and MPS degrees. Visit fitnyc.edu.

The Children's Cancer & Blood Foundation Announces 7th Annual Contemporary Art Auction

The Children's Cancer & Blood Foundation Announces 7th Annual Contemporary Art Auction

NEW YORK, NY (June 12, 2014) -The Children's Cancer & Blood Foundation (CCBF) is hosting its seventh annual Contemporary Art Auction on Wednesday, June 18th from 6 pm to 9 pm at Phillips - 450 Park Avenue.  The evening will feature after-hour access to Phillips, a cocktail reception and the opportunity to browse and bid on CCBF's diverse collection of paintings, photographs and sculptures.  Proceeds from this event directly support the Division of Pediatric Hematology & Oncology at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Foundation chairperson Les J. Lieberman spoke appreciatively of the artists, "We are overwhelmed by the incredible support our organization has received from the art community. We are very excited about the unique artwork in the 2014 art auction and are confident it will be our most successful auction yet. Funds raised from this evening will help CCBF ensure that all of our patients receive care regardless of their ability to pay".

Art featured in the auction will include works by artists Guido Argentini, Wayne Gonzales, Peter Halley, Candida Hofer, Zhang Huan, Michele Oka Doner, Richard Pettibone, Richard Serra, Massimo Vitali, Richard Wathen, Lawrence Weiner and more.

"The art auction is a signature event for CCBF," said Jennifer Zaleski, Executive Director of the Children's Cancer & Blood Foundation.  "Through this program, we are able to provide generous assistance for the imperative, life-saving work of our expert physicians and researchers."

Auction tickets are available for $50; however, buyers need not be present to bid.  Pre- and absentee- bids can be placed by clicking http://childrenscbf.org/content/place-bid-artwork.  All artwork has been donated by the artists, so acquisitions will be free of sales tax and buyer's premium, allowing all proceeds to go directly to CCBF.
