National Museum of the American Indian

Join Us! March is Membership Month
Dear Friend,

Be One of 100 New Members by March 31. Join TodayNMAI Membership Month is almost halfway through, and we are 7 Members toward our 100 new Member goal. That’s a good start.Join now to help get us to the finish line before our March 31 deadline. This is an important year for the Museum with four important anniversaries, including the 10th anniversary of the opening of our Museum here on the National Mall in Washington, DC.And we’re celebrating by doing what we do best:  telling the Native story in the Native voice and countering stereotypes with the truth.Already this year more than 160,000 people have visited the Museum.  And we’re reaching even more through our traveling exhibitions and interactive Website. But knowing the importance of standing up to longstanding stereotypes of Native people and helping people recognize the contributions Native cultures have made to contemporary life, the Museum is doing much, much more. For instance, the Museum is developing and providing materials to classrooms across the country to help educators present Native perspectives on history and contemporary life.  From “Beyond the Thanksgiving Myth” to “Native Words, Native Warriors,” our classroom lessons are providing today’s schoolchildren with facts and perspectives previous generations have been denied. But we cannot continue dispelling myths and bringing the truth to the world without Member support, which is why meeting our Membership Month goal is essential.Join now to help us gain 100 new Members before March 31!Sincerely,
Kevin Gover

The Interval
[L'intervallo]

by Leonardo Di Costanzo

Cinematographer:
Luca Bigazzi (The Great Beauty, Best Foreign Film Oscar)

A teenaged Neapolitan granita seller is forced to babysit a big-mouthed female peer for a Camorra boss in The Interval, the impressively subdued first fiction feature of Leonardo Di Costanzo (At School). Shot on sleek 16mm in an abandoned mental institution by Luca Bigazzi (The Great BeautyThis Must Be the Place), this film chronicles the push-pull dynamics of the adolescent protagonists, who both try to act older than their age in order to survive in their potentially violent reality.

Refreshments will be offered.  A conversation will follow.

A FIVE STAR LIFE
(VIAGGIO SOLA)

2013, Maria Sole Tognazzi,  85 min.
With Margherita Buy, Stefano Accorsi

Sat, Mar 15th at 5:15pm
Thu, Mar 20th at 8:00pm

Both breezy and bittersweet, this graceful dramedy netted Margherita Buy Italy's Oscar-equivalent Donatello Award for best actress. Her character, Irene Lorenzi, seems to have a dream job: quality inspector for luxury hotels. Her job combines elements of undercover spy and shameless sybarite, but the hypercritical attitude that serves her so well in her professional life also cripples her personal relations. Her funky sister, frisky nieces, and foodie friend (Accorsi) provide Irene with some much-needed companionship, but will she be able to pull herself out of the lap of luxury and into the flow of life? In Italian and English with English subtitles.

PRETTY BUTTERFLIES
(BELLAS MARIPOSAS)

2012, Salvatore Mereu, Italy, 100 min.
With Sara Podda, Maya Mulas

Sun, Mar 23rd at 5:15pm
Thu, Mar 27th at 8:15pm

The sordid confines of provincial life are counterpointed by the high spirits of adolescent girlhood in this energetic and inventive tale that, like director Mereu's previous films (THREE-STEP DANCE, SONETƀULA), is set on his native Sardinia. Narrated by 12-year-old dynamo Caterina (Podda), the film opens with an raucous tour de force detailing the daily waking-up routine in her family's cramped apartment--a symphony of noisy neighbors and screaming siblings, with the coveted bathroom the only oasis of privacy. The local boys are nasty and the grown men nastier, but Caterina's sweet-natured sometime-boyfriend Gigi is the exception. While on a seaside ramble with her best friend Luna, she learns that one of her no-good brothers is gunning for Gigi. Caterina knows she should warn him, but there are so many distractions en route... In Italian with English subtitles.

THOSE HAPPY YEARS
(ANNI FELICI)

2013, Daniele Luchetti, Italy, 106 min.
With Micaela Ramazzotti, Kim Rossi Stuart

Sun, Mar 30th at 5:00pm
Wed, Apr 2nd at 8:00pm

Director Luchetti's 1960s-set MY BROTHER IS AN ONLY CHILD (2007) won acclaim for its deft integration of political history and family drama. Set in the 1970s, this autobiographical story is seen through the eyes (and sometimes the home-movie camera) of Luchetti's boyhood alter-ego Dario, an aspiring filmmaker, but the focus is on his parents. His father Guido (Stuart) is a self-important but mediocre avant-garde artist whose dalliances with his models test the patience of his devoted wife Serena (Ramazzotti). The film's high point is a disastrous performance-art opening in Milan, which galvanizes Serena to embark on her own road to self-realization, beginning with a trip to a feminist retreat with Guido's lesbian art-dealer (Martina Gedeck). In Italian with English subtitles.

MARINA
2013, Stijn Coninx, Belgium, 122 min.
With Matteo Simoni, Cristian Campagna

Sun, Mar 16th at 7:00pm
Mon, Mar 17th at 7:45pm

Infectious Italian melodies punctuate this entertaining biopic of the Italian-Belgian singer who launched his international hit "Marina" at Carnegie Hall. Young Rocco Granata grows up in Belgium, despised as the son of an Italian coal miner. The accordion becomes his ticket to a future, coupled with ambition and his forbidden love for the daughter of the town grocer. Fifties ambience breeds Elvis-influenced garage bands and the danceable tunes that make MARINA a feel-good delight. In Flemish, Italian, and French with English subtitles.

DANTE

Why A New Edition of "The Divine Comedy"?
a lecture and book presentation by
Paolo Trovato

Monday, March 17th
6:00 pm
Italian Cultural Institute

Professor Paolo Trovato from the University of Ferrara, will present his new critical edition of the Divine Comedy. Dante's original work has never been found and all of the editions from the 1800s and 1900s are based, for the most part, on Florentine manuscripts belonging to the Vatican. However as Dante was exiled from Florence and wrote the Divine Comedy while living in Ravenna, Professor Trovato saw a need to refer to the copies of the manuscript from the North of Italy, which most certainly adhere closest to Dante's lost manuscript. In addition, even though the cult of Dante was already strong in the 1300s, no one before Professor Trovato had ever tried to compare all of the hundreds of manuscripts that exist of the Divine Comedy. Professor Trovato's edition reflects twelve years of work and the collaboration of a team of computer scientists from the University of Ferrara, who created special software to assist him in this massive undertaking.

This presentation will be in English.

A reception will follow.

ƉLAN: French for vigour, spirit, and an enthusiasm typically revealed by assurance or brilliance of performance, is a fitting title for her new body of completely un-manipulated photographs. All will be released as very limited editions in a small number of sizes. 24 different works make up ƉLAN, all heavily influenced by the circus in its many guises.  It’s a subject that has entranced many, such as the Impressionist school, who are drawn in by the romance which certain gifted physical forms are so capable of communicating.
“I was inspired by Paris, the performances of the Moulin Rouge, the old circuses, wild abandonment and that feeling of letting go that explodes out of you like you’re drunk with love,” says the artist.
Christy’s new work features a gentle mix of the classical, the abstract, and the wild. They depict a multiplicity of entangled bodies, ravishing the space that they occupy, while delicately floating in her extravagant underwater world. “I imagined living in Paris during the1920s as a performer, with no possessions except for your talent and art, and how free, yet desperate, that would be,” she says.
"Grip of the Undertow"
"ciel de pluie"
Christy is revered by painters for her uncanny ability to master chiaroscuro lighting, a contrast between light and dark used to great effect by the late Renaissance master Caravaggio. The technique lends a baroque sensitivity to her works, which are all shot underwater. No camera trickery or special effects are used whatsoever – merely the photographer’s ambition plus her uncanny eye for the physical artistry of human gymnastics. Moreover, in the case of the ƉLAN exhibition itself, Christy has enlisted the services of some of the world’s premiere performance artists.
To capture these images, Christy flew to Las Vegas, Nevada, USA where she worked with ten of the world’s most extraordinary performers; dance masters, synchronized swimmers, aerialists, pole dancers and actors. “You know a true talent by the enthusiasm they bring to their performance and to everything around them. That energy just exudes out of them and it’s so inspiring,” she says.
"Vanity and Vexation"

"fantƓmes Ʃtoile"

In what could be described as blissful irresponsibility Christy lets go of all rationality, and turns up the insouciance to superimpose classical elements upon ostentatious costumes dressing some of the world’s top performers. These contemporary harlequins are clad in bold candy stripes, graphic checks, metallic masks, and flowing silks in deep hues – making the perfect visual contrast to the translucent water and mercurial air bubbles enveloping their troupe.
Be exhilarated by the 21st Century Bohemia expressed in Christy Lee Rogers’ ƉLAN, taking place at The Outsiders London this summer.

Notes to Editors
About The Artist: Christy Lee Rogers
Christy Lee Rogers is a visual artist from Kailua, Hawaii. Her obsession with water as a medium for breaking the conventions of contemporary photography has led to her work being compared to Baroque painting masters like Caravaggio. Boisterous in colour and complexity, Rogers applies her cunning technique to a barrage of bodies submerged in water during the night, and creates her effects naturally in-camera using the refraction of light. Through a fragile process of experimentation, she builds elaborate scenes of coalesced colours and entangled bodies that exalt the human character as one of vigour and warmth, while also capturing the beauty and vulnerability of the tragic experience that is the human condition.
Rogers’ works have been exhibited throughout the US and Europe and are held in private and public collections throughout the world. She has been featured in International Magazines, including Harper’s Bazaar Art China, Eyemazing, The Independent, Casa Vogue, Photo Professional and others. Rogers’ work Reckless Unbound is currently housed at Longleat in the UK; the stately home which is the seat of the Marquesses of Bath and also home to Renaissance gems of the Italian masters, like Titan’s Rest on the Flight into Egypt.

The Outsiders Galleries, Newcastle and London

The Outsiders galleries sell affordable original works of art and limited edition prints from the Lazarides stable of artists. Emerging talents are also showcased alongside experimental and boutique projects from established names. The exhibition schedule focuses on work produced by artists who thrive “outside” of the orthodox gallery system. The Outsiders project was launched in 2008, with a group show in New York that attracted more visitors than a corresponding Gilbert and George retrospective at MOMA NY.
The two spaces in London and Newcastle upon Tyne occupy the sites of Lazarides’ original galleries. Having hosted some of the earliest gallery showcases by the likes of Banksy and Jonathan Yeo, and the first European exhibitions by American artists including David Choe, they boast a proud heritage on the contemporary urban art circuit. Artists exhibiting recently include Antony Micallef, Conor Harrington and Invader.
The book Outsiders is out now published by Thames & Hudson and the organisation is featured in Oscar-nominated documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop. A dedicated print studio, Execution Dock in east London creates all the gallery’s editioned works. Incorporating the thriving online art store www.theoutsiders.net, The Outsiders welcomes over ten thousand visitors annually.

Lazarides Gallery

Lazarides is one of the world’s most influential galleries, with three permanent spaces and extensive high profile off-site activity. The group is dedicated to emerging international artists who defy categorisation, often existing outside of conventional artistic career structures. This vision has resonated with the general public and major collectors alike.
Founded in 2006 by Steve Lazarides, the gallery represents some of the most exciting and innovative artists working today including Antony Micallef, David Choe, JR, Vhils, Faile, Jonathan Yeo, Charlie Isoe, Conor Harrington, Ian Francis, Stanley Donwood, 3D, Invader, Zevs, Mode 2, Todd James /Reas, Blu, Paul Insect and BƄST.
