Peter Simon

After an usually cold and snowy winter here on MV, signs of spring are slowly emerging, such as the snowdrops along Music Street. Along with the much coveted arrival of warmer weather, my public appearance schedule has changed slightly from my last newsletter. So here are the changes:

(1) My DVD signing and photo exhibit at CALUMET photo in Cambridge (150 First Street) will not be tomorrow, but postponed instead until April 10th from 6 to 9 pm.

(2) A special evening in honor of my life's work, which now spans 50 years of photojournalism, will include a lecture and image presentation of highlights from my new DVD "Through the Lens." It is still scheduled for next Thursday, March 13 at PATHWAYS in Chilmark from 6 to 9pm. I'm happy to announce that my beloved niece Sally Taylor will perform a special selection of music for the occasion. Food and drinks will be served, and the event is free! Get there on the early side, as we expect a possible SRO situation.

(3) A new appearance at the John Varvatos clothing outlet at Colpey Place has just been added to my schedule. I will be on hand to kick off their "Dress to Kill" tailored clothing event from 1 to 4pm on Saturday, March 22. Many of my iconic music photos are on  permanent display at their location, and I will talk informally about the stories behind some of the pictures, as well as signing copies of "Through the Lens." The event is open to the public, free of charge, and refreshments will be served!

(4) The SIMON GALLERY is scheduled to reopen for the season at our location at 54 Main Street in Vineyard on the Friday of Mother's Day weekend, May 9th. We will be sporting a "new look," the details of which will appear in my next regular newsletter.

Speaking of which, many of you have been asking when you can help decide which photos to use in my 2015 Vineyard Calendar. I will post them in early April when I publish my next full length newsletter as well.

Finally, my new DVD "Through the Lens" has been garnering nice attention, write ups, and some amazing testimonials. While you can still order personally autographed copies on my website, it's worldwide release and distribution is scheduled for April 20th, and will also be available on Amazon at that time. Stay tuned! -Peter Simon-

The India Association of Greater Charleston presents
Zakir Hussain & Masters of Percussion
March 15, 2014

Indian music will be played by the world's leading percussionist and Grammy Award-winning virtuoso, Zakir Hussain. The India Association of Greater Charleston (IAGC), will present the concert "Zakir Hussain & Masters of Percussion" featuring the internationally renowned tabla player.

Zakir Hussain was a child prodigy on tabla, an Indian percussion instrument. He was touring at the age of 12, and along with his legendary father and teacher, Ustad Allarakha, he has elevated the status of the tabla, both in India and around the world. He has recorded and performed with artists as diverse as George Harrison, YoYo Ma, Joe Henderson, Van Morrison, Airto Moreira, Pharoah Sanders, Billy Cobham, Mark Morris, Rennie Harris and the Kodo drummers.

For a small taste of this rhythmic phenomenon, please view this clip with Hussain on the left (start at the 45-min. mark): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqQTOK3kh4E

One of Hussain's regular collaborations is Masters of Percussion, an outgrowth of his early tours with his father. Since 1996, he has taken the best of India's percussionists (along with one or two melody players) around the U.S. and the world.

Charleston residents will have the unique chance to witness Hussain¹s improvisational dexterity in addition to the skills of the Masters of Percussion: Selvaganesh Vinayakram (kanjira and ghatam), Steve Smith (Westerndrums), Niladri Kumar (sitar), Dilshad Khan (sarangi), Deepak Bhatt (dhol) and Vijay Chavan (dholki).
