LOLA ARIAS EL AÑO EN QUE NACÍ / THE YEAR I WAS BORN

LOLA ARIAS
EL AÑO EN QUE NACÍ / THE YEAR I WAS BORN

January 23-26, 2014

Argentinean writer, director, performer, and songwriter Lola Arias brings El Año en que nací / The year I was born to the MCA Stage. Ten performers, born during Augusto Pinochet's 1970s and 1980s dictatorship in Chileretell their parent's stories using photographs, letters, cassette tapes, old clothing, anecdotes, and elusive recollections. The performances are part of the MCA Stage Global Stage Series and take place January 23-25 at 7:30 pm, and January 26 at 3 pm, in the Edlis Neeson Theater at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

Invited by the Chilean government to create a new work, Arias chose to explore the seemingly-lost histories of people who lived under the Pinochet regime. Arias identified ten performers whose parents had diverse experiences living in Pinochet-era Chile. They don their parent's clothes and tell family stories that represent a range of economic, racial, and political backgrounds. Performer-by-performer, the stories collect and converge, retracing both personal histories and the collective history of Chile.A harrowing and cathartic experience for the performers, this playful and political piece reveals the complexity and dark secrets alongside the joy and humor of lives recovered.

Lola Arias is the co-founder of Compañía Postnuclear, an Argentinean group of interdisciplinary artists. Her productions explore the boundaries between reality and fiction, using biographies and real documentation in a surreal or poetic way. In her work Striptease (2007), a baby occupied the center of the stage while the parents dueled by telephone. In El amor es un francotirador (2007), performers related true and fictional love stories amid a rock band playing live. In 2010-2012, she curatedCiudades Paralelas, a festival of urban interventions in Berlin, Buenos Aires, Warsaw, Zurich, and SingaporeHer works have been performed internationally at festivals including Steirischer Herbst, Graz; Festival d'Avignon; In Transit Festival, Berlin; We Are Here, Dublin; Spielart Festival, Munich; Alkantara Festival, Lisbon; and Radicals Festival, Barcelona. Together with Ulises Conti, she composes and plays music and has released the albums El amor es un francotirador (2007) and Los que no duermen (2011).

"As an imagemaker, "Where do you get you inspiration," is one of the questions most frequently asked of me. I have several pat answers but the truth is we humans are unavoidably interesting. We voluntarily have our faces injected with poison, "fin" sharks for soup, grind up animal horns in hopes of an erection, and count boredom among our most common afflictions. Our species serves up unending inspiration on a platter. Inspiration pushes me to unsettle with originality, question with juxtaposition and scratch away at peoples' minds."  -BILL CARMAN
AFA | At AFA, we are inspired by wildly imaginative artwork that indulges the senses and engages the emotions with layers of  symbolism and dark complexity. We exhibit paintings, drawings and sculptures created by extraordinary established and emerging artists who are highly skilled and have a unique vision.

SIMON KEENLEYSIDE
BACK TO THE WORLD

continua fino al 10 gennaio 2014
continues until January 10th 2014

Somewhere. Oil on canvas. 2005-13

COMUNICATO STAMPA[english below]

Continua presso la Blindarte la mostra Back to the World, personale di Simon Keenleyside.

it continues at the exhibition Back to the World, solo show by Simon Keenleyside. The show will be open every week day until January 10th 2014, from 10 am to 1.30 pm and from 3.30 pm to 7 pm.
Simon Keenleyside was born in Essex in England in 1975. Over the years, he has become known for a style of painting that draws its inspiration in equal parts from the tradition of English landscape painting and modern abstraction. A graduate of the Royal College of Art in London, Keenleyside has been celebrated for his masterful ability to manipulate perspective and depth of field in a very personal and always recognizable way. The artist's source of inspiration are the landscapes of his family home in Essex, including the banks of the River Thames and the woods that he played in as a child. These two sites prompted the artist to dwell on the ontological understanding of place. Although references to landscapes prevail in his work, more recently the British artist has moved away from representing physical space and has placed a greater emphasis on the evocation of the mental states, desires and anxieties that accompany him during his travels in the region. His desire to experiment with formalism and materials enables him to convey his visual and emotional experience to the viewer. He portrays the surrounding landscape not in its natural form but with his polychromatic, dreamlike vision. Keenleyside has studied the possibilities of painting in even greater detail, discovering new details of places he already knew, and creating reverberations of memory that suggest the impossibility of their full recovery, like the limitations of painting itself.
The exhibition's title, "Back to the World", is a reference to Agnes Martin, to her long period of research during the years of isolation in New Mexico and the abstract paintings of that period, inspired by the absolute calm and tranquillity, "as if they were produced without any reference to our world." Keenleyside also investigates the meaning of painting, but does so with a direct use of the surrounding landscape, concentrating fully on what is actually the subject represented in the painting, the real protagonist of the work.
Keenleyside has exhibited in numerous exhibitions in the United Kingdom, Denmark, the United States and Italy. In 2002, he won the BOC Emerging Artist Award, and in 2004 the Lexmark European Art Prize. Works by the artist are in major collections such as the Boc group, Comme de Garcons, Hiscox plc, Mario Testino, Amlyn Collection, Marsh McLennan, RCA Collection, and TI Group.

The Conservation Center
Conserving Art Coast to Coast
 December 2013 Newsletter
Holly, jolly! As we approach the burst of energy that is the end of the year, The Conservation Center has much to celebrate. In this issue of our newsletter, we're spotlighting some inspiring projects that we've recently completed: delicate hand-carved frame work for a sacred Madonna and Childpainting; the rediscovery of a rare painting by legendary rocker Frank Zappa; and a fundraising campaign in collaboration with The Springfield Art Association to restore a historical piece of furniture. At this time, all of us at The Conservation Center would also like to extend our warmest wishes to each of you, and hope this holiday season is filled with family, friends, and plenty of opportunities to reflect and recharge. See you next year!

A Refreshed Frame for
Madonna and Child

Just in time for the holidays, The Conservation Center completed extensive conservation frame work for a beautiful Madonna and Childpainting for the Diocese of Rockford collection. Josh McCauley, The Center's Associate Conservator of Frames and Gilding, carved out new decorations by hand, showing off his true attention to detail and expert craftsmanship.

A Renewed Appreciation for Frank Zappa

What happened in 1961? John F. Kennedy was sworn in as the 35th president of the United States; "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" by The Shirelles was a #1 hit; and the non-dairy creamer was one of the greatest inventions of the year. It was also the time when a budding young musician named Frank Zappa discovered his artistic creativity and painted Horny. More than five decades later, the painting made its way to The Conservation Center, where we restored the masterpiece to its original glory.

Kickstarting a Lincoln "Courting Couch" With The Springfield Art Association

The Springfield Art Association (SAA) of Springfield, Illinois, is looking towards the crowdfunding site Kickstarter to raise money for the restoration of the couch on which Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd sat during the early part of their courtship. The Conservation Center is thrilled to be the official conservator for this historical piece of furniture! We'll be documenting the process in the next couple of months and bring you the story early next year. In the meantime, we encourage you to help SAA with its goal and contribute to this campaign. Donation starts as little as $5!

On Art and Artists Series. Julie Ault: What Follows..., 1991

University of Colorado, 31min
In January of 1991, Julie Ault and Andres Serrano visited the University of Colorado at Boulder at the invitation of Lucy Lippard, who taught there intermittently for many years. The visit was on the occasion of the first solo exhibit of Serrano’s KKK Portraits at the Colorado University Gallery. Group Material had by then completed some of their most influential exhibitions, including The Castle (Documenta 8, 1987), Democracy (Dia Art Foundation, 1988-1989), and AIDS Timeline (Berkeley Art Museum, 1989). Ault and Serrano were at the end of their marriage, and Group Material was in a crisis about if and how to move forward. Serrano was not a member of GM, but his work appeared in several of their projects, and the visibility of his images in the American Culture Wars was in dialogue with GM projects that challenged and provoked debates on art in the public sphere. Accordingly, this pair of videos is a time capsule, or perhaps a freeze-frame, of their diverging subjects.
This program is preceded by Cinema Elaine.
