Art Public: Transforming Collins Park with 22 works of art and live performances  

For the second year running, Art Public turns Collins Park into an outdoor exhibition 
space with large-scale sculpture, video, installation and live performance. Produced in 
collaboration with the Bass Museum of Art, the Art Basel Miami Beach sector includes 
works from the show’s galleries, by leading and emerging international artists, installed 
from ground level within the park to flying along the Miami Beach skyline above. Art 
Public Opening Night takes place on Wednesday, December 5 with a program of special 
performances. 

Selected for the second consecutive year by Christine Y. Kim, Associate Curator of
Contemporary Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and Co-Founder of the
Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND), this year’s edition of Art Public features a series of
works grounded in their connection to speech and language. In this context, Art Public
presents a new version of Ry Rocklen's 'A Touch of Grace', a flag that hangs the length of a
pole and comes perilously close to the ground. With 'Black Dada Flags', Adam Pendleton also
turns to flags as a medium for dialog and lines 16 along Collins Park. Placed in separate
locations in the park, two billboards by Gary Simmons spell out the words 'I wish it could be
morning all day long'. Conversation also continues in the air, as Dave McKenzie’s 'Declaration'
features a plane flying a text-based banner above Collins Park, each day at 11.45am, offering
a different marriage proposal to Art Public viewers every time.

Other works surprise in scale and delivery. Presenting a new work for Art Public, Mark Hagen
shows three interconnecting cement screen panels, each made out of 84 individually crafted
cement units stacked together. While Hagen’s work appears weighty, Ruben Ochoa presents
three new sculptures appearing to defy gravity. For 'Love Stream', Randy Polumbo has turned
a vintage Airstream aluminum trailer into an experiential wonderland of illuminated blossoms,
while Pierre Ardouvin's 'Bonhomme de neige' humorously depict a melting snowman.

Works by Latin American artists, including Lourival Cuquinha, Juliana Cerqueira Leite, José
Davila, Teresa Margolles, Raul Mourão, Iván Navarro and Miguel Andrade Valdez address a
variety of concerns such as urban negotiations around freedom, leisure versus labor, materiality,
movement and monumentality. Art Public also feature 'Twin Vortexes' by Alice Aycock, the first of
six large sculptures realized for 'Park Avenue Paper Chase', scheduled to be on view in New
York on Park Avenue in spring 2014. Included in the sector will be 'Riser', a new work by Australian artist David Keating, and 'Poets in Miami' by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa. Finally, 'I
feel, you feel, we feel through each other into our selves' by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone will be
on display in the park.

Art Public Opening Night, free and open to the public, features a commissioned musical
performance by Jason and Alicia Hall Moran with Brandon Ross, interacting with artist José
Davila's work in Collins Park. On that same night, My Barbarian presents an extract of their
piece 'Broke People’s Baroque Peoples' Theater', a singing performance playfully engaging in
questions of economic inequity, artistic patronage, and cultural excesses through a fake
theatre company obsessed with classical allusion, costume, masquerade and sculpture. The
evening continues with an enigmatic choreography by Alex Israel.

On the Oceanfront (between 20th and 21st Streets) and in close proximity to Art Public, the
Absolut Art Bureau presents 'Güiro', an art bar installation conceived as a Gesamtkunstwerk
by the artist collective known as Los Carpinteros – Cuban-born, Madrid-based, Marco Castillo
and Dagoberto Rodriguez. Open from 5pm to midnight each night, December 5-8, 'Güiro' is
accompanied by a curated program of live music, performances, and events including
contributions by distinguished Mallorcan composer Joan Valent. For more information, please

Since the fall of 1964, Festival in the Park has brought Charlotteans from all walks of life together to enjoy arts, crafts, music and family entertainment. With the mission of bringing the community together by celebrating the arts, the Festival Board is excited to broaden its reach and to announce the third year of its spring fine arts event, the Kings Drive Art Walk.

We invite you to participate in our spring event which will be held along the Sugar Creek Greenway, a newly reclaimed natural waterway between East Morehead Street and Pearle Street Bridget along Kings Drive. With a focus on fine and emerging artists, our new spring festival on this beautiful and easily accessible venue will become an annual fine arts outing!

Most importantly, the King's Drive section of the Sugar Creek Greenway is adjacent to some of Charlotte's most prestigious and affluent neighborhoods - with homeowners who appreciate and can afford fine are. We intend to target these neighborhoods with appropriate promotional materials.

For more than thirty-eight years the Greater St. Louis Art Association (www.gslaa.org) has been providing opportunities for the public to see and purchase original works of fine art and fine craft directly from the artists who create them.

Every year we produce two juried art shows (Spring and Labor Day Weekend).  Artists in all media are encouraged to apply. These shows feature juried local, regional and national artists' original work. From the pool of artists applying, about 110 artists from all over the US and Canada are invited to exhibit. These artists are selected by a professional jury process in eleven distinct media categories.

Both shows are presented in the indoor, air-conditioned setting of the Greensfelder Recreation Complex at Queeny Park in west St. Louis County. Food and refreshments are available on site, parking for the public and artists is free.  Live music playing during wine tasting and peek attendance.  During Sunday afternoon, an interactive children's art education program encourages families with youngsters to meet and talk with artists and learn about their work.

One Mile Gallery concludes its 2012 season with Crash Landing!, new and old works by Mark Hogancamp. This is the artist's first exhibition with the gallery. It continues through Saturday, January 5, 2013. 

Mark Hogancamp is a photographer who prefers to identify himself as a director, and with good reason. Mark is the creator of Marwencol, a 1/6 scale, WWII-era Belgian village in which he stages and photographs a complex narrative of Nazi intrigue, lesbian melodrama, and Sgt. Rock-style heroics. With his immense cast of dolls, Mark freely intermixes history and fantasy, allowing Kurt Russell to confront Goebbels, time-traveling witches to antagonize Hitler, and Mark himself to battle personal demons.

In 2000, Mark was the victim of an assault outside of a bar that left him with brain damage. Faced with significant memory loss, diminished hand-eye coordination, and crushing anxiety, Mark retreated from the real world into the imaginary one of Marwencol. Inclined to think of the project more as therapy than art, Mark worked for years in obscurity, accumulating thousands of photographs before his unique oeuvre was eventually discovered. A 2010 documentary, Jeff Malmberg's award-winning "Marwencol," earned Mark international attention and a significant new fan base.

My Other Guitar is a Paintbrush features work by seven visual artists who're more often recognized for their work as popular musicians: Sue Garner (Fish and Roses and Run On), Brian Dewan, Grasshopper (Mercury Rev), Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Georgia Hubley (Yo La Tengo), Tara Key (Antietam), Tara Jane O'Neil, and Rachel Blumberg (The Decemberists and M. Ward).  Works range from painting and photography to block prints and installations.

Directions to One Mile Gallery from NYC Take 87 (Major Deegan) to Kingston, NY (exit 19). Take exit 19 toward NY28 Kingston/Rhinecliff Bridge. At the traffic circle, take the 2nd exit onto Washington Ave and drive about a mile. Follow detour signs to Greenkill Ave and S. Wilbur Ave. Turn right onto S. Wilbur Ave. After about 1.3 miles, turn left onto Abeel St. Address is 475 Abeel. The gallery is a brick building with yellow trim.
